Chapter 24
In the room, in front of me on the double bed, was Arianna.
We both stared at each other for two seconds with wide eyes before running straight into each other's arms. All my worries about her whereabout disappeared; I was finally with my best friend again.
I couldn't even hear half the words she was saying and I laughed at her typical thing: talking too fast.
âArianna, breathe!â I said, laughing. She took a deep breath and sat back down on the bed again, grinning.
âI was so scared at first, I can't even describe it, Sam. They just put me in here and told me to wait!â
âIt's okay, it's okay,â I soothed, looking around in the room. I don't know why I was looking for clues or anything, I didn't expect to find it here. âWe're going to get out of here, trust me.â
Arianna chuckled, taking a breath.
âI was hoping you'd say that.â
There was a firm knock on the door, surprising both me and Arianna. We exchanged a look before walking to the door together. I opened it slowly and carefully, my eyes landing on one of the guards. As soon as he saw me, he spoke.
âYou are to follow me,â he said and turned around, already walking away. I grabbed Arianna's hand, dragged her out, shut the door and hurried to catch up with him. I was too busy taking in everything in this place to notice where he was taking us and Arianna was quiet the whole time.
Don't get her wrong, she was strong and very good with taking care of herself, but she was also one of the most scared, shy people I knew. She could be strong and filled with attitude one day and the next she could be quiet and shy, depending on the situation. But I knew she wouldn't pass out or anything dramatic, she was not that scared. She was just worried, I was too.
Finally, we stopped outside two big doors and the guard opened them for us. Arianna and I walked in to what seemed a huge office-like room with a classic interior. The man behind the desk was none other than the same man that I had talked to in the shed. The man who was obviously the boss here.
He gave us a big smile, gesturing to the arm chairs.
âSamantha, Arianna, please take your seats. I have brought you here to explain about all of this.â
âYeah, I sure hope so,â I muttered as we sat down.
âWhat's going on?â Arianna asked, slightly glaring at the man.
âWell, I want to assure you that I want you no harm, ladies. Absolutely no harm. In fact, it's the opposite. I've taken you here to protect you.â
âProtect us from what?â I asked, narrowing my eyes at him. What was he talking about?
âI will explain that as soon as my son arrives. That should be any- Ah, there he is. Ladies, Jack, my son. Jack, this is Samantha and Arianna Riley.â
A tall, blonde and blue eyed boy walked in, dressed in nice khaki pants and a light blue shirt. He gave us a polite smile, nodding once at each of us.
âVery nice to finally meet you,â he said in a British accent. âI assume you don't know why you're here yet?â
âNo and if someone doesn't start speaking soon, I'll make sure you will,â I snapped. Arianna shot me a warning glare and I knew I should try and control my temper.
âShe's a bit feisty, as you can see, Jack,â the man said, chuckling. I gaped at him. Was he serious? I was sitting like just a few feet away. I could hear him. What an idiot.
âWell, let's get to the point then,â Jack said, but not before joining his father in their little âmoment of chuckles.â
Jack leaned back against the large desk. âI'm guessing you both know who Liz Warren is, am I right?â
Arianna and I nodded. I had to try to keep my commenting back; I just wanted to hear this and get out of here.
âWell, Liz Warren is my mother-â I was about to comment that, but he raised a hand and continued, âwhich means that my father, Howard and Liz were married.â
âYou're not still married?â I asked. Well obviously, Samantha, he just said so.
âNo, we are not married since many years back,â Howard, the older man, said. Jack, his son, continued.
âMy father and your parents,â he looked at both me and Arianna, âwere very good friends many years ago, when we weren't even born.â
âWhen Jack, Tyler and Jennifer were young, Liz and I had a big fight one day,â Howard took over. âI was with Jack, fishing, and Liz was home with the two younger ones. The fight escaladed to a big thing over the phone and when I came back, Liz and the kids were gone. She had left a note that only said âgoodbyeâ and that maybe someday I would see my children. Since then, I haven't had contact with them but I've heard things that put me in a position where I started searching for them, watching them now and then.â
âYou may wonder why she left me,â Jack said. âWell, I never asked her so I don't know myself and yes, it was very hard at first but my father and I managed very well. Around that same time, my father and your parents slowly lost touch but Liz didn't. She was still a good friend to your family and visited you often with Tyler and Jennifer.â
âNow that we've heard what we've heard and also have confirmed, I decided that I wasn't going to just sit around and wait for something to happen. I was very close with your father, Samantha and since this was about you, it made it even more impossible to do nothing.â
âWait,â I said, frowning. âAbout me?â
âYes, well...â Howard glanced at his son before continuing. âIt seems that my son Tyler is still mateless and Liz has gone overboard with the situation. She has been looking for a mate for him for over a year and still hasn't found one. Her visit to you was not because she wanted to see the Riley's. It was too see you, Samantha.â
âSo... you're saying that... She wants me to be Tyler's mate?â I breathed. And I had been going out with him and everything! What an asshole!
âYes,â Howard said. âIt is against nature, I know. But what concers me is that this has made her crazy and now she has been planning for months to take you away and force you into it.â
âAre you serious?â Arianna exclaimed, eyes wide. I looked down, wondering how on earth no one knew anything. This is crazy. And that woman had stayed in our freaking house. She acted all nice and stuff when all she really wanted was to freaking kidnap me and make me do something completely wrong and against nature.
âWhy Liz has suddenly turned her back on such good friends, I am not sure,â Howard said. âI have been working on this for months. I have people watching her every step, following her. Those days when she stayed with you and was always in town, she was doing business, planning with her pack on when to strike.â
âWe took you here secretly because we don't want anybody to know that we know. She has people everywhere as well,â Jack said. âAfter all, it's you they want. They have been watching you just like we have been watching her and we know that she is close to acting on her plan, that's why we took you here.â
âBut... I can't stay here so long! She'll find out eventually that I'm not there and then she'll probably hear that I'm kidnapped because my family and my mate are going to freak out and those news will spread around quickly, trust me in this town, and then she'll realize that I am hiding from her and she'll probably figure out that you have something to do with this as well.â
I took a breath, breathless by my unstopping speech. I didn't know if anything I just said was true but I couldn't stay here anyway. I had to protect my family and my mate's family; she could hurt them to get to me, after all, the woman is crazy, you heard.
âYou are absolutely right,â Howard said, âbut we need to send you back with some kind of protection. I have people here and there but I will send some more around your house and territory that will make sure that you and everyone else from your pack will be safe.â
âThank you, Mr. Warren,â I said. âAnd I'm sorry for my rudeness earlier, I really thought you had kidnapped us.â I chuckled and he smiled warmly.
âPlease, be very careful, ladies. And tell your father I said hi, would you?â
âAbsolutely. Thank you again for doing this.â
âThank you,â Arianna said, smiling.
The guard from earlier led us away and out to a car that was waiting for us. This was all so weird. I was thankful that Howard had respected our feelings and let us go with protection; I certianly didn't want to stay here. Not after the fight my pack just had with the other pack. I had to see that everyone was okay.
Arianna and I sat quiet almost the entire way back. This ride felt much longer somehow. I still couldn't belive that happy and excited Liz Warren had such evil intentions against me. I mean, sure her son was mateless and she was worried but his time would eventually come. How could he do this? But this explained all those weird looks and behaviors that I had just thought was awkward. And all the visits to town that last week.
âAre you okay?â Arianna asked. I was staring out the window, relief filling me when I saw my familiar territory. I nodded, giving her a smile.
âHow about you?â
âGood. It's just shocking news, really. And kind of frightening. She can come any day and just take you.â
âShe won't take me, Ari. Look at how many we are plus all the protection we're getting from Mr. Warren and his pack. And trust me, Noah is probably an entire pack just him.â I chuckled and Arianna smiled.
The car stopped and the driver announced that we had arrived. We thanked him and jumped out of the car, my eyes searching for my father or Noah, or at least Mason or anyone of the Black's. No one was outside, though. It was weird â someone was always outside, sitting and talking or enjoying the nice weather. I decided to go straight to the Black's. My house was dark inside and theirs wasn't; maybe my father was there.
As I walked up the front porch stairs and knocked, I wondered what the reaction was when they came home last night. The fight had ended not that long after we fell asleep, I think. They must've come home right after that.
The door opened, revealing a pale looking Mason. I frowned, immediately knowing something was wrong. The whole athmosphere was off. His eyes widened at the sight of me, but before he said anything, I spoke.
âMason?â I said quietly. âWhat's going on?â
His face fell again.
âMy father...â he said, his face blank, eyes empty. Panic started rising inside of me. âHe's in a coma. He might die.â
