What's That Supposed To Mean? - Werewolf Romance

Chapter 6

Now that’s something different. First Alpha and then with Noah, too? But Alpha? Should I be happy or nervous? I wasn’t even sure I knew what Alpha was. I mean, sure I knew what it was and what an Alpha did but I’m a girl! Girls never become Alpha’s. It may have happened once or twice in werewolf history. And now it’s my turn? This year? With Noah?

“You don’t have to feel anything about this, not right now. But I want you to know that you still have quite some time to get ready for it and it’s not that bad actually. But it’s shocking and new, I know. Any questions, come straight to me or John.”

I nodded.

“Sam, honey?”

“I’m fine. It’s shocking news, yes. But… I’m going to do it either way. I’ll get used to it. Don’t worry about it, dad.” I smiled. “I wont disappoint you.”

“Sammy, it’s okay if you feel like it’s the worst thing in the world-“

“Dad, really. I don’t feel like that. I’m just surprised, that’s all. Don’t worry.”

“Okay then. I’m glad.” He stood up. “Are you going to bed?”

“No, I thought I’d stay in the front yard a little, watch the stars and just relax. Is that okay?”

“Absolutely.” He gave me a kiss on the forehead, smiled at me and walked out from the kitchen. I took a deep breath, went to the hallway and looked for a small quilt, grabbed two pillows to make it more comfortable and went outside. We had chairs on the grass on the front yard, for everyone, but I wanted to lie down. It was nicer that way and easier to watch the stars.

I put the quilt down in the middle of our front yard, some feet away from Arianna’s house that was in the middle, put the two pillows down and got down in a comfortable on-back position. I relaxed, breathing out. Have you ever had those times when you lay down on your bed and relax your back and it hurts? Yeah, that’s what I had now and I loved it. I could feel everything just fade away.

It was so quiet. All houses on my field and on the field on the other side (A/N: I don’t know if you still don’t know how I mean, but there’s kind of a small gravel path in the middle for cars to drive in or something. Ask if you don’t know and I’ll explain better!) were completely quiet. I tried to tune in somewhere random, listening for something, a TV, music or an interesting conversation… But I wasn’t going to listen to private stuff. I didn’t do that even though I could get very curious and excited.

“Mind if I join?”

I looked up to find Max, smiling down at me. I made some room, giving him the second pillow.

“Not at all.”

He laid down next to me, looking up at the sky. It was nice having company even in silence.

“How’s it been lately? You know, since you came home,” he asked. I smiled.

“It’s been great. Sometimes it feels like I never went away and sometimes it feels like I was away for too long.” I shrugged. “I’ll be over that soon, though.”

“Yeah. How’s your dad?”

“Good. Guess what he just told me,” I said.

“What?”

“I’m going to be Alpha with Noah once our two packs join as one.”

“I know.”

I glanced at him. He knew? So everyone probably knew. Great.

“How?”

“My dad is Beta, don’t you remember?” he said, chuckling. Oh right.

“Right. Sorry, forgot about that. Victor’s dad is Beta for Uncle John, right?”

“Exactly. And the Betas know everything the Alpha’s know, pretty much, and we were just talking and discussing about Alpha’s and packs and all that and he just told me. But I think only those who attend the big pack meetings know. Not the rest.”

“Thank God,” I mumbled.

“Do you people not have lives?” said someone from a bit further away. And that someone, I recognized, was Noah.

“Ugh, do people not mind their own business?” I muttered and Max chuckled. I turned around, lying on my stomach. “What do you want, Black?”

“Oh, so we go by last names now?” he said. “Okay. Nothing, Riley. I come out at nights sometimes, to be alone. But clearly that’s not going to happen now.”

“No. So you might want to move.”

“No thanks, I’m good here.”

I turned back around to lie on my back and sighed. Max got up, apologizing for having to leave when he saw my face. I didn’t want to be alone with this douche!

“Max!” I hissed. He chuckled, shaking his head.

“I’m sorry, I really am, but I’m supposed to pick Lillian up from her father’s. Good luck.”

“Ugh, can’t argue against mate stuff, can I? Oh well. Thanks. Goodnight, Max.”

“Goodnight, Sam.” Max smiled again and then walked away. I heard a scoff from behind me and rolled my eyes.

“How cute. ‘Goodnight Max’. ‘Goodnight Sam’. So lovey dovey.”

“In case you didn’t figure it out, he has a mate. Maybe you should find yours too so you stop being such an asshole.”

He didn’t reply. Oops. Maybe I pushed the wrong button? I sat up, turning to face him. His face wasn’t angry; it was soft and he looked… sad. As soon as I turned around, he tried to cover it up with his “poker face” and I shook my head at him.

“We both know you can’t hide your feelings from me, Black,” I said. “I’m sorry if I went too far.”

Even though I wanted him to loose, I didn’t want to really hurt him. I couldn’t stand it. Whoever it might be, if I said something really low, guilt was suffocating me. And Noah was after all a childhood… enemy. Yes, enemy, frenemy, I don’t know, but he was and I would never hurt him even though he had hurt me so many times when we were little. It was different now, in all kinds of ways. We took some things more serious, we knew what everything meant now. It had a different meaning now that we were older, we thought differently.

Noah didn’t say anything, or look at me for that matter, so I just decided to take my stuff and go home. But when I stood up, ready to take everything, he spoke.

“Don’t go. I mean… You don’t have to leave.”

My heart kind of froze but, thanks to poker face, I nodded with a small thankful smile and lied back down again. I had never thought he’d speak to me in that voice. Forget what he said, the way he said it… His voice was soft and relaxed… vulnerable almost.

Something was shaking. Everything was shaking.

Oh no, wait. I was shaking. Someone was shaking me. But the hand that touched me left as soon as it touched and left tingles on my bare skin. My eyes opened and I found myself still outside, on the grass. And Noah was standing above me. Staring at his hand with wide eyes.

“Did I fall asleep?” I asked, already knowing the answer. I pushed myself up, groaning at the pain in my back. So much for relaxing. I managed to get on my two feet and yawned, covering my mouth. It was still dark outside, though. “Noah?”

He was still staring at his hand and now he was staring at me two, back and forth. What was he all about? One minute he was normal and the next he was disgusted.

“Look, I’m sorry if touching me was such a mistake but thanks for waking me. Goodnight,” I said, taking my stuff and walking home. I locked the door behind me and glanced at the clock as I put the quilt and the pillow down. Two in the morning. Ugh, great.

I made my way quietly upstairs and into my room, hearing my father’s snores from the room after mine. I yawned again, feeling the sleep coming back. I kicked off my shoes clumsily and pulled off my jacket, but I never had time to change into pajamas because as soon as I sat on the bed, I threw myself under the covers and fell asleep.
