Chapter 19
Bride Behind The Mask
The guy was full of intimidation. Although Marguerite was a bit rattled, she quickly clarified, âIt was Mr.
Fitzgerald who brought me here.â
Frederickâs face changed slightly, his eyes sparking like a torch. This Robert was a real pain in the ass.
He shot Marguerite a glare before ringing up Robert, his irate voice loaded with gunpowder, âI need an explanation!â
Robert chuckled on the other end of the line, responding with a jest, âYou got it all wrong! Marguerite is your wife, yet you let me handle her. I thought to myself, that I canât stash someone elseâs wife at my place, can I?â
âTake her back wherever you picked her up from. Youâve got ten minutes. Donât make me lose it.â
Frederick was like a cheetah, inducing fear. But being Frederickâs doctor, Robert knew how to get his mind. He was always within Frederickâs comfort zone. âFrederick, do I need to spell it out? How Marguerite became your wife, how you can smell her perfume, arenât you curious? There must be some hidden truths around here. The closer you keep her, the closer you are to the truth.â
Robertâs words woke Frederick up like a splash of cold water.
Yesterday, he could have let Marguerite go since her background was clean as a whistle. But todayâs perfume incident revealed that she wasnât as simple as her profile suggested.
What puzzled him the most wasnât why he could smell Margueriteâs perfume, but why her perfume smelled exactly like the one Yuna had on that night. If it wasnât for the clear CCTV footage showing Yuna was the woman with him, he would have suspected Marguerite!
Until he figured out the source of that scent, he couldnât let Marguerite go.
Frederick snapped back to reality, massaging his forehead with his long fingers, âI got it.â
After a short conversation with Robert, Frederick turned back to Marguerite, his icy face seemed indifferent, âI can let you stay, but there are a few rules.â
Marguerite was caught off guard, looking up at Frederick with a puzzled expression. Did he just change his mind? What did Robert tell him? But she had no other place to go, it didnât matter where she stayed.
âPlease say it.â
âFirst, you canât enter my room. Second, donât let anyone at the company know weâre living in the same house. And third, the most important one, you canât claim to be my wife.â
âMr. Winston, did you get it twisted? Wife? Arenât we just boss and employee?â
Marguerite was quick on her feet, knowing Frederick doubted her identity, she clarified her position.
His wife? No way. She never acknowledged that title.
Frederick was taken aback by her reaction. Her effort to push him away didnât seem like she was up to something. He gave her a glance, then turned to Chuck, âTake her in.â
âYes, Mr. Winston.â
Marguerite followed Chuck inside, but Frederick stayed out. He stood at the doorway, smoking, as if he was deep in thought. Marguerite seemed genuine, there wasnât a hint of deception. She truly wasnât interested in being Frederickâs wife.
If it wasnât for her sick grandma, with Margueriteâs personality, she would never associate with a man like Frederick. She was just taking shelter here, and she would try her best to avoid Frederick during her stay!
Marguerite had a nice plan, but reality didnât play along. As soon as she entered the guest room, an unknown call came in. The number was hidden, it was so careful it reminded her of the mystery person.
And it turned out she was right.
âMarguerite, you should have gotten close to Frederick by now. Good, I didnât misjudge you.â
The mystery personâs voice was metallic, making it hard to tell its gender.
Marguerite quickly looked around, feeling watched. âWho are you?â she whispered, âHow did I become his wife? Why was I at his house yesterday? I demand an explanation!â
The mystery person laughed, his or her voice, modified by the voice changer, was grating, âThatâs not what you should be worrying about. Now, you have a new mission to accomplish.â
Marguerite was instantly filled with rage, âDonât push me too far! Our deal was for me to marry him, then you would treat my grandma. What else do you want me to do?â
âMarguerite, you donât have the right to negotiate.â The mystery personâs voice turned icy cold, with a tone dead serious, âDonât forget, your grandma is in my hands. One word from me, and her treatment could stop at any time.â
Marguerite shuddered, feeling a chill. Her grandma was her weakness, and she was powerless against it. She had no choice but to compromise, asking helplessly, âSo, whatâs the next mission?â
âMake Frederick recognize you as his wife and fall in love with you within three months.â
