Chapter 34
Bride Behind The Mask
Now this is a headâscratcher, how did Margueriteâs grandmaâs medical records end up in her momâs hands?
Just as Marguerite was lost in thought, another text from Zoe buzzed in.
The text was an address, along with a nasty jab, âIf you donât wanna come grab your grandmaâs medical records, thatâs on you. Itâs not like weâre gonna lose sleep over whether she kicks the bucket or not.â
Margueriteâs fingers clenched tightly around her phone.
She could stomach insults from Zoe, but for her to say such a thing about her seriously ill grandma?
What kind of human being does that?
For the sake of her grandmaâs wellbeing, Marguerite had no choice but to duck out of work and dash off to Zoeâs given address.
She knew she was about to walk into a storm of scolding, but hell, her grandma was the only family she had left, she couldnât choose not to go.
at a swanky residential area called âDiamond Crest Estatesâ.
An hour later, she hopped off the bus Marguerite got off the bus, entered the neighborhood, found the house number and knocked on the door.
The door swung open, and Yuna, sizing Margueriteâs plainâJane outfit, didnât bother hiding her disdain, her eyes dripping with arrogance.
âMarguerite, are you moonlighting behind Frederickâs back? Dressed like this and you have the gall to come to Diamond Crest Estates? How the hell did you get past security?â
Marguerite replied with a poker face, âIâm just here to pick up grandmaâs medical records, then Iâll be on my way.â
Ablett and Zoe were sipping in the livin room. Zoe glanced at the door and haughtily said, âLet her in.â
Yuna yanked Marguerite inside, then gave her a hard shove. âGet in and knock off the âwoe is meâ act, will ya?â
Even though she was shoved, Marguerite didnât bother. She straightened her back and headed for the living room.
Watching Margueriteâs resilience, Yuna was overly smug. âMarguerite, you see this? This place is something you could never afford in a million years, but here I am, living in it. You know why? Because Frederick loves me. He bought this house for me and my nameâs on the deed.â Marguerite calmly stared at Yunaâs smug face, âNo matter how much he loves you, youâre still just a mistress. As long as I donât divorce him, youâll never be a part of the Winston family.â
âYOU!â Yuna was so angry her eyes turned red.
âGive me grandmaâs medical records now.â
Marguerite ignored Yuna and turned to face Zoe and Ablett.
But the moment she turned her head, Zoeâs palm landed hard on her cheek.
âYou shameless ingrate! Our family went bankrupt because of you, and now youâre trying to steal your Zoe pointed at Marguerite, almost poking her in the eye.
sisterâs husband!â
âYou dare to steal from your sister? You must be out of your mind! If we knew you were so conniving, we should have let Feeling that cursing at Marguerite wasnât enough, Zoe shoved her to the ground.
âI didnât steal her bracelet! I didnât!â
Marguerite covered her reddened cheek with one hand, using the other to push herself up from the floor, Seeing this, Yuna quickly moved forward and started to beat Marguerite.
âThief! Youâre still trying to defend yourself!? It was you who stole my bracelet! You wench!â
Marguerite was drained. She had spent the day handing out flyers and hadnât eaten anything. How could she defend herself?
All she could do was using her arms to protect her head and gritting her teeth to bear the pain.
Pain washed over her like a flood, and Margueriteâs frail body trembled.
die at birth!â
Suddenly, she realized, they didnât have grandmaâs medical records. They had tricked her into coming here just so they could give Yuna an excuse to bully her.
âThatâs enough, Yuna! If you keep hitting her, youâll hurt your hand.â A deep, weathered male voice rang Ablett put down his cup of tea, stood up proudly, and looked at Marguerite. He tossed a bus ticket in her face.
His action was as if he regarded Marguerite as nothing more than a lowly animal.
âMr. Winston is Yunaâs man, and thatâs not changing. You better get real, leave Stonebridge City while weâre still in a good mood and go back to Marina Shores Village.â
Marguerite, with tears welling up in her eyes, choked on her words, âDad, the old house in Marina Shores Village was burned down years ago. If you want me to go back, where am I supposed to live?â
âThatâs your problem, not ours!â Ablett glanced at Marguerite, hands behind his back, âAnd for the record, Iâm not your dad. Yuna is my only 13-09 daughter!*
With a throbbing headache and a desolate look on her face, Marguerite balled up her fists, staring at the three people in front of her.
Why did she still call him âdadâ? They had long stopped acknowledging her as their daughter.
To differentiate her from Yuna, they even made her wear this hideous mask.
Tears welled up in Margueriteâs eyes, but she held them back and said, âUnless Frederick himself tells me to leave, I wonât let you guys have your way!â
Ablettâs face changed, as he didnât expect Marguerite to have the guts to say that.
*Marguerite, youâve been in the countryside for so many years, but you sure have grown some guts!â
âIâm warning you, if you dare to hurt grandma again, Iâll rip you guys!â Marguerite tightened her fists, unflinchingly staring them down.
Before she could finish her sentence, a vase in Yunaâs hand came crashing down on the back of Margueriteâs head.
Margueriteâs world went black and she passed out.
Letting go of the vase and seeing the blood seeping from the back of Margueriteâs head, Yuna suddenly screamed, âDad! Weâre screwed! I think we mightâve killed her!â
Ablett was taken aback and quickly reached out to check Margueriteâs breathing. After a while, he let out a sigh of relief, âDonât worry, sheâs just passed out.â
âSo what do we do now?â Yuna looked at Marguerite, asking anxiously.
Ablett looked menacingly at Marguerite, âSince she doesnât want to leave, then she canât blame us for being rude! Weâll dump her in Marina Shores Village and let her die!â
