Chapter 436
Bride Behind The Mask
Jocelyn rose to her feet quickly. âIâll go out and welcome him. Would you like to join me?â
Marguerite, whose eyes were already red and swollen from crying, shook her head heavily. âIâd rather not. Iâm not exactly in a state to entertain guests.â
Jocelyn gave Marguerite a sympathetic look, nodded, and took her hand to walk her out. âWhy donât you go rest in your room? Iâll come check on you later?â
âOkay.â
Margueriteâs room was upstairs. Jocelyn accompanied her to the stairwell before they went their separate ways.
Marguerite, still trying to regain her emotional stability, slowly climbed the stairs to her room.
As she stepped off the stairs and onto the hall, she noticed a strange woman looking around as if searching for something.
âHello, can I help you find someone?â Marguerite asked.
The woman turned at the sound of her voice. She was dressed in a simple beige dress covered by a white coat. The yellow scarf around her neck. however, gave her an air of elegance.
Marguerite stared at the womanâs features and froze.
The woman bore a resemblance to Zoe, but she was far more sophisticated and refined.
Upon seeing Marguerite, the woman displayed a brief moment of unease.
âIâm Penelope, a friend of Powellâs,â the woman explained. âI heard he was ill and brought my son, Robert, to visit.â
So, she was Robertâs mother. No wonder she was so elegant.
âMaâam, Mr. Powellâs room is downstairs. You seem to have taken a wrong turn,â Marguerite replied politely.
The woman, who introduced herself as Penelope, hesitated as if considering something. She then decided to ask Marguerite directly about the person she was looking for.
âDo the Winstons have a girl named Marguerite?â Penelope asked.
âIâm Marguerite,â she responded instinctively.
Penelope appeared surprised. The girl she had been looking for was right in front of her?
With a look of delight, Penelope pulled out a business card from her pocket and handed it to Marguerite. âThis may be sudden, but trust me, I mean no harm. Iâve smelt your Polar Radiance, and thereâs no doubt youâre talented. Iâd like to offer you a position in my cosmetics company. Weâre working on a new product and need a perfume developer.â
Marguerite was taken aback. She looked at the business card.
Penelope⦠Poppy Petal Fragrances⦠Penelope was a big name in the cosmetics industry!
However, Maurice had explicitly told her to stay at the mansion or she wouldnât get any news about her son.
With a twinge of sadness, Marguerite was about to refuse, but Penelope seemed to see through her and said, âThereâs no need for an immediate answer. You can think it over. Whether you accept or not, I hope youâll give me a call.â
Penelopeâs gentle tone and demeanor made Marguerite reconsider. She finally took the card and nodded, âThank you, maâam. Iâll think about it.â
Watching Marguerite accept the card, Penelope breathed a sigh of relief and left.
But she stopped midway, turned around, and looked at Marguerite again. For some reason, she felt an inexplicable attachment to the girl she just met.
âDo you need anything else, maâam?â Marguerite asked instinctively.
Penelopeâs gaze was intense. âMarguerite, how old are you?â
Marguerite answered truthfully, âTwentyâfive.â
Penelope paused, a flicker of something passing in her eyes, then a hint of sadness.
âTwentyâfive⦠the same age as my lost Ninaâ¦â She murmured.
