Chapter 45
Bride Behind The Mask
Sunshine streamed through the windows into the presidentâs office of the Winston Group, spreading warmth and coziness. Frederick lounged on his swivel chair, basking in the sun, while his assistant, Chuck, respectfully reported from behind him, âMr. Winston, Marguerite and the Lockwood family do have a connection, but they donât interact much.â
Frederick massaged his forehead, confused. âIf Marguerite was truly adopted by the Lockwood family, why are there no adoption records? And thereâs no proof that Marguerite is a Lockwood.â
Chuck quickly pieced together a possibility from their previous investigation. âThe Lockwood family might have taken Marguerite in temporarily before she was taken away by her own family. We found out that Marguerite lived with her grandmother since childhood. She mightâve been taken away by her grandmother.â
Frederick nodded in agreement.
Speaking of Margueriteâs grandmother, Frederick suddenly remembered his agreement with Yuna. âBy the way, howâs the search for Yunaâs grandmother?â
Chuck dropped his gaze, looking guilty. âStill looking.â
Frederick threw him a displeased look, then massaged his forehead again.
What a bunch of useless guys. They had her grandmotherâs detailed information and they still couldnât find her.
But what Frederick didnât know was that Yunaâs grandmother and Margueriteâs grandmother were the same person.
He opened his eyes and looked at Chuck. âHowâs Marguerite? Is her health improving?â
âMr. Winston, Marguerite has already returned to work.â
Frederick frowned, his concern subtly leaked from his tone. âWho allowed her to come to work?â
âIt was Margueriteâs own insistence. Sheâs currently working on the Polar Radiance perfume and felt she had been delaying the work, so she came.â
Frederickâs handsome face showed a hint of interest. âShe does have a great work ethic.â
Chuck glanced at the time and made a suggestion. âItâs almost lunchtime. Should I send her home?â
Frederick thought for a while, then shook his head. âNo need. Sheâs all about work right now. She wonât rest well at home, so let her stay at the company. Also, order a meal from Epicurean Eats.â
Chuck immediately took out a notepad to write down the order. âMr. Winston, what would you like?â
Frederick thought for a moment. âA nut chicken salad, grilled salmon, and a porcini mushroom soup.â
Chuck reminded him as he wrote, âMr. Winston, do you need these foods for replenishment?â
Frederick glared at him. âDo I look like I need replenishment?â
Chuck hesitated before asking, âThen, this is?â
âFor Marguerite.â
Chuck felt that Frederick seemed to be more concerned about Marguerite since she was rescued.
Chuck remembered how Yuna had caused a scene at Sapphire Valley Estates this morning. Although he didnât know what she said, he was sure it was nothing good about Marguerite.
He even spotted Mr. Winston holding Yuna from afar, which filled his heart with disappointment. He believed Mr. Winston must have believed Yunaâs words!
However, Mr. Winstonâs deep concern for Marguerite now confused him even more.
Who was the woman Mr. Winston loved?
Actually, Frederick did believe some of what Yuna said. But what she talked about were things from their childhood.
Now, Marguerite might not be the same as she was as a child.
Frederick had been in the business world for many years, and he knew better than anyone else that rumor could kill.
Although Yunaâs words were logical and sincere, they were still just her side of the story, But Frederick had eyes. He could judge for himself. He needed to observe for himself what kind of person Marguerite was.
Besides, he had been living with Marguerite for so many days. Although he always suspected her of having other motives, she never badmouthed Yuna in front of him.
But every single word from Yuna hinted at Margueriteâs wrongdoings. How different was Yuna from those backstabbers in the company?
Frederick had a deep distaste for Yunaâs behavior.
Lunchtime came.
Chuck quickly ordered food from the restaurant, and appeared near Margueriteâs desk with a large lunch box.
The employees were about to head to the cafeteria for lunch, and Marguerite was about to join them.
To her surprise, she almost bumped into Chuck as she turned around.
Chuck stumbled, immediately guarding the lunch box in his arms, afraid it would spill.â
âChuck, canât you make some noise when you walk? You scared me.â Marguerite was startled.
Chuck took a moment to catch his breath, then calmly placed the lunch box on Margueriteâs desk. âMr.
Winston prepared this nutritious meal for you. Make sure you sat it all.
Then Chuck winked at Marguerite playfully before immediately resuming his usual serious expression.
Marguerite stiffened, glancing around uncomfortably. Sure enough, she saw her colleagues whispering and occasionally glancing in her direction.
They had long suspected something was going on between her and Mr. Winston!
So, Mr. Winston stuck up for Marguerite when she was handing out flyer, right?
And these past few days, Marguerite had been playing hooky for three whole days. Mr. Winston didnât chew her out, and he even thoughtfully prepared a nutritious meal for her.
Could she be Mr. Winstonâs sweetheart or what?
