Chapter 471
Bride Behind The Mask
An hour later, at Poppy Petal Fragrances.
Today marked Margueriteâs first day at the company, and the CEO herself, Penelope, personally guided her through the orientation process.
Skipping the usual entry-level grind, Penelope had appointed Marguerite as a senior fragrance designer right off the bat.
âMarguerite, your office is right across from mine,â Penelope said warmly. âIâve arranged for an assistant for you, about your age. If you need anything, just ask her.â
Marguerite blushed with modesty. âPenelope, thatâs really kind of you. Iâm just here to work, and youâve set the bar so high, Iâm afraid Iâll let you down.â
Penelope quickly patted Margueriteâs hand, feigning annoyance.
âWhatâs this âPenelopeâ business? Youâre making it sound so formal! Call me Auntie! Besides, my instincts are never wrong. I have confidence in you, so you better start believing in yourself!â
Marguerite was taken aback. Landing a management role on her first day was unbelievable enough, but Penelope asking her to call her âAuntieâ?
Yet strangely, despite having only met Penelope a handful of times, Marguerite felt an inexplicable kinship with her.
Nodding obediently, Marguerite agreed, âPenelope, from now on, Iâll call you just that.â
Hearing Marguerite address her so casually brought a smile to Penelopeâs face.
She grabbed Margueriteâs hand and affectionately squeezed it, her eyes beaming as they surveyed her new protégé. Then, with a sudden flourish, Penelope removed the sapphire blue silk scarf from around her neck and gently draped it over Margueriteâs shoulders, tying it into a chic knot.
âMarguerite, you and I have a similar sense of style-minimal on the jewelry. Remember, weâre in the beauty business; itâs linked to fashion. Spruce yourself up a bit; it gives you energy, whether at work or in life. This is my favorite scarf, and I want you to have it as a welcome gift. Work hard and donât disappoint me.â
Marguerite fingered the luxurious sapphire scarf, its silky fabric clearly expensive.
Suddenly, she thought of her late grandmother Laverne, who had also encouraged her to shine brightly and live beautifully.
In that moment, Marguerite realized Penelope was more than just a boss; she was like family without the barriers of distance.
Accepting the gift, Marguerite smiled gratefully, âThank you, Penelope.â
With a wave of her hand, Penelope led Marguerite to her office. âSettle in. Iâll have your assistant come find you.â
After Penelope left, Marguerite waited in her office. Finally, the assistant entered, and to Margueriteâs utter shock. It was Miley?
Their surprise was mutual, and in unison, they exclaimed, âWhy is it you?â
Marguerite was stunned, but Miley quickly closed the door and rushed to the desk, leaning on it with both hands, and blurted out, âSo youâre the hotshot they parachuted in? Marguerite, what kind of spell do you have? Youâve got Mr. Winstonâs mother in your palm, and now my future mother-in-law canât do without you!â
Marguerite rolled her eyes at Mileyâs blunt words, âStop making Jocelyn sound so frail! Jocelyn and I respect each other; nobodyâs controlling anyone.â
âOh, come on! Mutual respect is for married couples!â
âItâs close enough,â Marguerite retorted, then peered intently at Miley. âBut what do you mean by âcanât do without youâ?â
Mileyâs eyes widened with disbelief. âYou donât know?â
Marguerite shook her head. âHow would I? Iâve never dealt with the Fitzgerald Group.â
Miley dragged a swivel chair over, sat down across from Marguerite, and leaned on the desk with an air of seriousness. âRobert told me his mother wanted to poach you for Poppy Petal Fragrances, but he refused because he was trying to get you into Thunderbolt Enterprises!â
âWhy?â
Miley was exasperated. âWhy? To set you up with Mr. Winston, of course! Weâve been breaking our backs over your little romance.â
Marguerite laughed. âThen you guys really are too idle.â
âDonât give me that sass! Iâm not done! The position youâre in has been vacant for over twenty years!
My mother-in-law was saving it for her lost daughter! And now that youâve landed, everyone thinks sheâs been found, and itâs you!â
