Chapter 541
Bride Behind The Mask
Miley was caught off guard, her reaction time seemingly caught in a slow-motion trance.
A barrage of inquiries from Robert left her befuddled, leading her to a sweet, blushing misunderstanding, âIsnât this a bit too sudden? Are we meeting the parents already?â
Robert gently patted Mileyâs head, clarifying with a warm smile, âItâs not just about meeting your folks.
What I really want⦠is to dig into some childhood stories about little Marguerite.â
Miley then realized what was going on.
Oh! She thought he wanted to meet her parents as her boyfriend.
But then again, it made sense. Robertâs mind was preoccupied with his sisterâs welfare, not exactly in the mood for whispering sweet nothings.
Miley was gracious, yet a tinge of imbalance shadowed her heart.
She recalled all the efforts sheâd made to win over the Fitzgeralds, putting her pride aside to chase after Robert to his company, yet he had shown little in return.
It felt like a brazen disregard for her feelings.
So, with a voice tinged with resentment and an emotion slightly stirred, Miley vented, âI just donât get it!
With the DNA test at hand, why canât you just trust the results? Thereâs no evidence to suggest that your sister is Marguerite!â
Facing his girlfriendâs fiery displeasure, Robert didnât flare up. Instead, he took her hand with patience and began to explain, âThree years ago, Frederick scoured the earth for the girl who had saved his life.
He was close to finding Marguerite, but in the end, Yuna took her place.
If she could impersonate once, whatâs stopping her from doing it again with my sister?
Miley, itâs not the DNA test I distrust; itâs the possibility of Yunaâs interference that bothers me. So, I want to investigate further. Can you understand that?â
Miley, pouting, slipped her hand from Robertâs grasp and turned away, her lips pursed as she gazed into the distance, silent.
Robert, initially lost in his own emotions, saw Mileyâs resistance and was momentarily stunned before rapidly replaying their conversation in his head.
He quickly realized that in the whirlwind of his sisterâs issues, he had indeed neglected Miley.
He stepped closer, wrapping his arms around her shoulders, and pulled her gently into an apologetic embrace, âSweetheart, I admit I havenât been at my best lately, and I hope you can forgive me. My sister is my family, and so are you. You both mean the world to me. Once I sort out my sisterâs affairs, I promise Iâll propose to you, officially. Alright?â
Nothing promises sweet commitment like talks of marriage, and at his words, Mileyâs mood visibly lifted.
Her smile was unstoppable, though she playfully posed a question, still feigning indifference, âAnd have you discussed this grand plan with your parents? What if they donât agree?â
His fingers traced her soft cheek as he replied with the finesse of a seasoned diplomat, âYouâve pursued me all the way to my familyâs firm; not every girl has your determination. Trust me, my parents will welcome you with open arms.â
Mileyâs smile broadened, her tone turning teasing, âAnd if they donât, no matter what?â
Robert pulled her closer, his chin resting on her neck, his warm breath spreading from the nape to her ear, âThen weâll jet off to our own adventure! We wonât repeat Frederick and Margueriteâs tragic misunderstandings. Iâm holding on to you tight, right here, right now!â
His words were sincere and heartwarming, not slick or overdone.
Miley turned to embrace him fully, finally letting him off the hook, âAlright, alright, Iâll believe whatever you say! Iâll contact my parents as soon as I can. Theyâre usually off to a tropical getaway every winter, soâ¦â
Robert, ever so polite and considerate, assured her, âNo rush. They can return whenever it suits them.â
