Chapter 393
The Fake Heiress Turns Out to Be a True Tycoon!
Chapter 393: Chapter 393: Her Reciprocal Gift, Green with Envy When the old lady started speaking to her, she actually felt a little uneasy inside.
Mainly, she was worried that this granddaughter might embarrass her in front of everyone.
Previously, the girl had intentionally ignored her and only expressed gratitude to her grandfather.
Not to mention, she had personally seen those two enormous ghosts following Scarlett Jennings around.
Deep down, the old lady was actually somewhat intimidated.
Yet, even as she felt anxious, she kept reminding herself that this was her granddaughter, and that the girl should listen to what she said.
Out of habit, she couldnât help but try to put on a grandmotherly authority whenever she was around her.
Luckily, Scarlett didnât treat her words as air. Hearing her speak, she obediently walked to the front.
The old lady discreetly let out a sigh of relief, then quietly straightened her posture, and introduced her to Kingston Jennings, "Kingston, this is Scarlett, your big uncleâs daughter. She was just found recentlyâthe one I mentioned to you before."
Kingston nodded, glanced at Scarlett, and suddenly stretched out his hand to point at a suitcase being brought in by the people behind Uncle Ming.
The suitcase had already been disinfected. When they saw him pointing at it, Uncle Ming quickly understood, stepped forward, and opened the suitcase for him. Inside, everything was packed neatly and orderly.
At the very edge of the suitcase sat an exquisite long box with a small tag hanging on it. Written on the tag were three words:
[Scarlett Jennings]
Uncle Ming picked up the long box with a cheerful smile and said, "This is a gift weâve prepared for Miss Scarlett."
Scarlett was slightly stunned as she stared at the box in Uncle Mingâs hands, her gaze instinctively shifting toward Kingston, who gave her a small nod. He tapped twice on his phone, and a robotic male voice played on the other end, "A homecoming gift."
Scarlett was mildly surprised.
When she first returned to the Jennings Family, the elders had all prepared gifts for her.
However, among her cousins, only Donovan Jennings had given her a personal gift.
Kingston was now the second.
Standing nearby, Adam and Chase both had peculiar expressions when they saw the "gift." Their minds raced as they quickly tried to recall if they had prepared any gifts for Scarlett back when she returned.
The answer seemed to be...
No.
To their credit, it had all happened so suddenly. Barely two days after confirming Scarlettâs identity, Brother Donovan had already brought her back home.
There had been no time to prepare anything.
Nor had they thought of preparing a gift.
The Old Sir Jennings was clearly very pleased with Kingstonâs thoughtful gesture. Excluding Donovan, this was finally one of his grandsons acting like a proper one.
Seeing Scarlett accept the gift, he smiled warmly and encouraged, "Scarlett, go ahead and open it."
Scarlett naturally wouldnât go against the Old Sirâs wishes. She opened the box and found inside a scroll painting, meticulously mounted, with a texture that felt impressive in her hands.
Scarlett slowly unfurled the painting, and what emerged amidst rich shades of green was the image of a woman.
Her almond-shaped eyes widened slightly in a daze.
With just one glance, she already recognized the woman.
It was... her mother.
She had seen her motherâs face before in the photos Donovan had given her.
Although she never had the chance to meet her in person, every time she looked at her motherâs photos, Scarlett couldnât help but feel an inexplicable sense of closeness.
It was like an invisible cord of blood ties that bound her and made her unable to let go.
But the feeling this painting evoked in her was even stronger.
When Luca Jennings walked into the room, the first thing he saw was Scarlett clutching the painting in a daze.
When his eyes fell on the woman depicted in the painting, a trace of pain flickered in his gaze, disappearing in an instant as he composed himself once more.
He had heard that Kingston had suddenly come home and even requested the family doctor, which was why he had rushed back, thinking something had happened.
Even though he resented Odessa, perhaps because Kingston had stayed by her side for a significant time when he was youngâand with Kingstonâs frail healthâLucaâs feelings for this nephew were ultimately different.
"This must be Kingstonâs handiwork, I presume?"
By the time Luca spoke, his expression was back to normal. He walked over and explained to Scarlett, "Kingstonâs health is poor, but heâs very skilled in traditional Chinese painting."
There was no one else who could paint his wife so vividly besides Kingston, who had spent much of his childhood following her around.
Scarlett seemed to understand as she listened.
No wonder.
The reason she had been so captivated just now was partly because the painting portrayed her mother, and partly because the artwork itself emitted a faint white glow.
She had seen such spiritual power auras in some masterfully crafted art pieces before.
Her mentor had explained to her that everyone carried a trace of innate spiritual power, and even those who couldnât practice it would unconsciously imbue it into something when they sincerely poured their hearts into creating it.
Since Kingston had painted this by hand, it must have taken him a lot of effort and care to complete.
A slight tremor stirred within Scarlettâs heart. When she looked at Kingston againâeven though his demeanor remained sullen and reservedâshe inexplicably felt a hint of goodwill toward him.
After a momentâs thought, Scarlett carefully put the painting away, then pulled out her backpack and began rummaging through it. Finally, she pulled out a Blessing Bag.
"Thank you for the gift; I really like it," Scarlett said as she handed the Blessing Bag to him, her tone sincere. "This is a token of thanks in return."
Everyoneâespecially Chase and Adamâfixed their gazes on the bag in Kingstonâs hand, even the old lady craned her neck curiously.
After all, as her biological grandmother, she had never received a gift from Scarlett.
Chase and Adam shared the same thought but rationalized it by reminding themselves that they hadnât given her gifts either. Naturally, there had been no reciprocation.
Besides, that bag probably just contained a peace charm or something of the sort, right?
Three thousand per charm?
They didnât lack such things.
Consoling themselves this way, they then watched as Kingston opened the Blessing Bag and poured out... a jade token.
A familiar jade token.
With equally familiar runes engraved upon it.
At that moment, Chase and Adamâs eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
Not just wide openâthey even turned green with envy!
Scarlett had actually given him a jade token!!!
The very same item they couldnât get their hands on even for eight million, and Scarlett just gave it to Kingston for free??
Why?!
Just because he gifted her a painting he made?
If thatâs what it took, they couldâve painted something to give her too!
Why did she only give it to Kingston and not to them??
Both brothers couldnât help but cast jealous glances at Kingston.
And they werenât the only onesâthe old lady was feeling quite sour herself.
After all, Lucas had bragged about his jade token in front of her, and she had even looked into it afterward.
In the family, the elder sonâs household and the Old Sir both had one, Lucas and Violet had them too, and even the third branchâs couple got theirs.
But she, as the grandmother, didnât have one.
Wasnât that ridiculous?
For Chase and Adam, it was one thing, but she was the grandmother.
Even if she had favored Azura Loomis before and neglected Scarlett, she hadnât done anything overly harsh to her, had she?
Hadnât she later compensated her with 2% of the companyâs shares?
Why was the girl holding such a grudge?
No grandmotherly address, no amulet giftâit was blatantly obvious she was being treated differently.
That temper...
The old ladyâs gaze swept over the scroll painting in Scarlettâs hands.
And she thought to herselfâ
Scarlettâs temper was exactly like her motherâs!
