5|It's not an earring
TEJNA
HER POV
At the end of a wearisome engagement night, all I should now do is sleep but sleep was nowhere near to me. I'm astounded at my actions. Bhabhisa gave me the photographs to keep them safe in Radhika's room and I'm still wondering why I still have them in my hands. None seems to catch my attention other than his picture. More than cherishing it, I was in a complaining mode.
Why does he choose to show up like that outside of my thoughts? Whereas in the picture, he seems quiet, simple and handsome. But in reality, he is more of a tease. His eyes speak a thousand words if they were ever to talk. His charisma is anything but simple. He commands the place and those around him no matter where he is. And yes he is pretty.
But I'm never going to let him dominate me. He might be a good-looking ruling businessman in the city, but it has no impact on me. I will never let my guard down in front of him.
"You are definitely not what I imagined," I blurted out softly looking at his picture.
Suddenly a voice came out from somewhere around the room and I was too shocked to respond to that.
"You like what you see?" I heard his deep resonating voice.
But I was too shocked to respond to that. I sat immobile looking at his picture and praying to god for his voice to be a hallucination and nothing else.
GOD PLEASE!
Did he just catch me ogling his photo in his absence? Oh my God. I might die out of shame.
Why me? I cried mentally.
All of a sudden I felt shuffling near the bed and in no time I found him flying in from the window, above my bed and landing in front of me standing on his feet. My head jerked up to look at him standing there in a white T-shirt that was hugging his body intimately.
He was real.
And a smirk playing over his cheek. We both looked at each other for a few seconds, his gaze travelled to what I was holding in my hands. Witnessing it, his smirk converted into a smile.
"Missed me?" he asked.
I could barely breathe when he started coming closer taking short steps. I can't let him see me vulnerable or he will tease me every now and then.
Before he could take his last step towards me I quickly stood up and took a few steps away from him, hiding the photo from him behind my back.
"A...aap ya..yahan kya kar rahe hai?" I asked, trying to divert his mind.
(W...what a...are you doing here?)
He smiled very calmly, put his hands in the pocket and started to walk to me.
"Aapka saman lautane aaye the, par pata chala hamari tasveer nazron se laga kr baithi hai aap," he said walking up to me.
(I came here to return your item, but instead, I came to know that you are busy admiring my photograph)
I took another step back, while my heart started to beat hard. His words were turning me weak.
"Jii...jii nahi, aisa kuch nahi hai" I replied.
(N..nooo there is nothing like that.)
He took another big step towards me and I quickly turned away and went behind his back, my back facing the dressing table. He also turned to face me. Before he could say something I interrupted.
"Kya lautane aaye hai aap?" I asked.
(What do have to return to me)
He smiled again and brought out something from his pocket. Opening his fist he showed me my belly piercing jewellery. He had it, all this while. I was relieved knowing he found it but also got tensed that he doesn't know about it much.
"Your earring," he said pushing it forward to me.
I looked at him and then his palm. Biting my lower lip a little out of anxiety, I quickly attempted to take it away but he closed his fist and pulled it back.
"First show me what you're hiding behind your back," he said.
Arghh! He is so rigid. Why is he like that?
"It does not concern you," I said, masking my weak emotions and throwing some confidence on my face.
He chuckled. My jaw dropped slightly, reflecting my disapproval of his laughter..
"Why are you laughing at me?" I asked, getting annoyed.
"You look cute when you lie," he said.
"I'm not lying, these photos are for Radhika, it has nothing to do with you," I said.
"Then why were you looking at them and thinking about me," he said.
I sighed and bit my lower lip looking into his eyes annoyed.
"My earring, give it?" I forwarded my palm to him.
"The photograph, can I see it?" He said, forwarding his empty palm, and dangled my jewellery in the other, above his head.
I quickly jumped to take it but he quickly pulled away meanwhile it fell on the ground near to my feet. Before I could go down he already had it again in his palm after he squatted down.
He chuckled looking at it and then looked above at me. Even his eyes were smiling. The glow he gets when he is happy by heart is unbelievable. His cheeks were turning red and his lips had a widest smile, I guess.
But soon the smile was fading and a serious expression which I believe was taking place on his face. Suddenly I realised where he was looking. He was looking at my belly piercing. He saw it. I was not able to understand what I should do or say or do nothing at all.
His expression was getting intense every second. He was not even blinking after witnessing it.
Does he not like it? Out of nowhere, I started becoming curious about his opinion of my choice. I wanted to know what he was thinking about it.
But what I saw was his facial muscles tightening. It looked as if he was controlling his emotions.
Is that bad?
"It's not an earring," he stated very slowly.
Saying so he looked up to me. I was already holding my breath. My chest goes up and down.
I shook my head slowly and nervously looking at him.
He stood up to his height and I gulped down feeling extremely timid. I tried to look at him, but he was avoiding looking at me or maybe digesting something he didn't expect.
I was curious about what he was thinking about me after getting to know about this. He was the only one to see after Radhika.
Suddenly he looked at me with those intense eyes and took a step forward. I nervously took a step back looking into his eyes.
"Aap peeche kyu jaa rahi hai?" He asked taking another step.
(Why are you walking backwards)
"Kyunki aap aage aa rahe hai," I replied, taking a step back till I hit the table.
(Because you are taking steps towards me)
He took the last step towards me, getting quite closer without any hesitation. He held the table beside me under his palms and bent a little low. I got a little nervous while my heart was almost banging against my chest. My knees felt weak but I did not want to show any signs of it on my face. I clutched a little hard on the photograph while masking my face with a little bit of confidence left in my body.
"Has anyone else seen it?" he asked softly.
I took a calculative pause to his question.
"Only Radhika," I replied.
We were both staring at each other with soft and sincere emotion.
"It's beautiful!" He said.
I felt surprised by his words. My facial muscles relaxed hearing him say that.
"Really? you like it?" I asked.
"I love it!" he whispered after taking another look at it, and I felt my heart throbbing for his actions.
I could not say anything any further.
"I think I should leave," he said and took a step back.
I nodded, avoiding to look at him.
He started to walk near the bed, but this time he walked to the balcony door, on the right side of the bed. I followed behind him with slow steps. He started climbing down the pipe but stopped to look at me.
My breath hitched looking at him.
"Agli baar humse milne ki ichha ho to bula lijiyega, aap ko mana nahi karenge kabhi," he said and climbed down.
(Next time whenever you feel willing to meet me, just ask me, I will never deny anything to you,)
I could not say anything. Forget saying, I was confused about what was happening to me. I saw him getting down without getting hurt. It was a difficult task, he should not have come here like this. Was he really here to return my jewellery? This late at night?
After reaching the ground he looked up for a moment and then waved to me. Before I could respond to that he left, and I saw him walking away still standing there.
What was happening to me? Also what was happening with him too? Why is he so intimidating that I start to lose my senses whenever he is around me? Pondering over my thoughts I walked back in and lay on my bed and slept, after keeping all the pictures locked in my drawer.
Waking up the next day, I freshened up after completing my daily routine and walked downstairs wearing a simple suit.
A strange, lingering feeling gripped my heart, about crossing paths with him. But I should not feel so especially when he is around me or he would definitely take advantage of that. I started to work in the kitchen with Bhabhisa and Radhika.
"Sunaina, did you meet Jaya last night?" Radhika asked while I was preparing tea.
"Yes I did, even Deepti attended your engagement," I replied.
"I heard from maa-sa, that she is also to be wedded this year." She said washing her hands after preparing Poha for breakfast.
"Reallyyy? She did not tell me anything yesterday" I asked shockingly.
Radhika laughed a little and came to help me.
"I always told you she is not one for a closed circle," she said and I couldn't agree more.
Badi ma-sa entered the kitchen and Jhanvi walked along in a happy mood.
"And I'm making sure that before Jaya, my child Sunaina will be wedded into a good family." Badi ma-sa said, smiling at me and I sighed irritated.
"Yes of course!" Radhika laughed and Jhanvi joined.
I wanted to run away from here now but only if I could.
I heard a familiar voice clearing his throat. I instantly looked at the door and found him looking at me, with a blank face.
"I need to talk to you, whatever happened last night," he said and I almost felt numb.
