Chapter 37

34.- I will

Blood Moon (girlxgirl)

TW: a little swearing

That was the best sleep she had ever gotten, and she didn't want to wake up. It was so comfortable and warm. Ambrosia hummed and snuggled into Lupita's back, all her worries disappearing as she felt the warm body beside her. The beating of her heart calmed her as she tried to fall back asleep, but she was unable. That didn't mean she couldn't enjoy being close to the girl.

It still fascinated Ambrosia that the girl had fur on her body. And it was incredibly soft. She ran her hand slowly up and down her injured arm and smiled. And to think, there was a possibility that they could do this every day if Ambrosia could just come to terms with everything. Something which now didn't seem too hard. But she needed to sort herself out before committing to Lupita. She knew with the mate bond that Lupita and her could change. The mate bond was strange and she didn't quite understand it, but she understood it would amplify her feelings for the werewolf once she accepted.

"You think and hurt," came a groggy voice and Ambrosia finally opened her eyes to see the tan girl in front of her. She slowly moved to her back and pushed the pillow where her hand rested to her stomach. "Don't think," she said and softly poked her forehead.

"I like to think," Ambrosia said leaning on her elbow to look down at the girl. Her short hair went in all different directions yet still didn't look tangled. "It hurts right now because I have a lot to think about, but thinking helps me."

"Then think about little things," Lupita said and put her thumb and index finger out with a little space between them. "So it don't hurt.

"That is the plan," Ambrosia said and carefully stroked the side of her face without the bandage. "How are you feeling?" she asked and glanced at her shoulder which looked better than yesterday.

"Bad," Lupita said and hugged the pillow. "Very bad." Her eyes began to water and Ambrosia saw her shoulders shake as she gripped the pillow. "He's dead. And he's back."

Ambrosia kept stroking the side of her face as she sobbed into the pillow, the reality of everything that happened last night crashing down on her.

"Hey, it's gonna be ok," she said and softly cupped her cheeks. "There are a lot of people here who want to help you. You will be ok."

"You will help?" she asked between sobs and pushed herself to sit with Ambrosia's help.

"As much as I can," Ambrosia said truthfully and wiped the tears from her cheeks. "Today I'll help as much as you need me to."

"Why not more?" Lupita asked. "Did I do something? A-am I not-"

"I'm going to stop you from finishing that," Ambrosia said and softly placed her thumb on Lupita's lips. The girl flinched slightly and clenched the pillow close to her chest at the interruption. "There is nothing wrong with you. In any way," she reassured and saw the girl relax. "There is just a lot wrong with me. Something that I need to think about and figure out. Away from everyone, not only you. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, wrong with you."

The werewolf's shoulders relaxed as she stared at Ambrosia. She still held the pillow close to her stomach but her steel grip had loosened, and Ambrosia could see where her claws had punctured it as the feathers slowly spilled out.

"And," Ambrosia continued and carefully took Lupita's good hand in her own. "I am so incredibly sorry for what I did when we were at MJ's house, and just my general behavior toward you these past few months. And..." she hesitated as she held onto Lupita's hand. Would she forgive her? She took a deep breath as she continued, "Sorry for sleeping around. It was a bitch thing of me to do. I'm so sorry." She bowed her head and softly placed Lupita's hand on her forehead.

"I forgive you," Lupita said in a soft voice but Ambrosia could feel the hint of hurt in her voice. "And kind of understand? But... it still hurts."

"Of course, it would hurt you," Ambrosia suddenly snapped. "I have been an asshole. And I haven't been there for you. I have just been so confused lately and none of this has helped my confusion. But that isn't an excuse! I have been a bitch when you have just been acting the way you have to act. I could have kept it in my pants and talked about everything to someone. Or just talked to you. Or locked myself in my room and not emerge until my thoughts were sorted out. Or-" She was cut off by the feeling of soft lips against her cheek. Her hand flew to her mouth and she stared at Lupita. "You-"

"Was it ok?" Lupita asked and Ambrosia could only slowly nod. "You need to think," she said with a smile and brought one of her hands to her lips to softly kiss as well. "Take your time."

Ambrosia smiled softly at the girl and fought herself to not give in to her desires. She needed to sort out her thoughts quickly because she wanted nothing more than to be close to this wolf.

"Am I interrupting you finally confessing your feelings," came MJ's voice from the doorway.

"How long have you been there?" Ambrosia asked and pulled back her hand. She quickly looked at Lupita and gave her a sorry look. The girl just smiled and shuffled on the bed to be able to lean on the girl. She let out a big sigh and Ambrosia smiled at how much she reminded her of a big dog.

"Not too long," MJ responded and came over to them. "But I did hear your little speech. I was about to stop you myself before she got to it." She sat down on the edge of the bed and smiled at both of them. "Made any big declarations?"

"No," Ambrosia said and absently stroked Lupita's back. "I need time to think and just process everything. And I think you need to." She turned to Lupita at the last thing she said.

"Would rather do it with you," she said and snuggled into her collarbone. "But, you need your time. And I want you to be comfortable."

The smile was hard to hold back for Ambrosia, just like her tears. How was this girl so considerate after everything she had just been through? She should be selfish and demand that Ambrosia stay until she recovers from the insanity that just occurred. Yet, she didn't.

"Mom wanted to ask how you were doing?" MJ said softly. "Both mentally and physically."

"Bad, both," Lupita said and lifted her bandaged arm. "Hurts." She then pointed to the side of her face. "Hurts." Finally, she pointed to her heart and softly whispered, "Hurts."

"I'm guessing your throat also hurts?" MJ said and softly placed a hand on Lupita's shoulder. Lupita only nodded and snuggled more into Ambrosia. "We have some food and medicine downstairs. There are a few people there, but we can bring it up here if you want me to."

"Who?" Lupita asked and tried to sit up straight. She got slightly away from Ambrosia but was barely able to sit on her own and still leaned on her.

"My mom, my sister, North, Val, Elizabeth, Daniel, and recently Jazmyn, Aoi, Mai, Bella, and Gulterio, have also arrived," MJ listed off. "They are all very worried about you."

"Many," Lupita said and clenched the pillow again.

"Too many?" Ambrosia asked and rubbed her shoulder.

"I want to see them," she whispered and pushed herself more into Ambrosia. "But..."

"You can leave whenever you want. And they won't ask a lot of questions. Mom will make sure of that," MJ reassured. "And you have already answered the most important questions. Besides, you can always just whisper in Ambrosia's ear and she can tell the rest. Does that sound good?"

Lupita nodded and the two other girls smiled at her. Ambrosia quickly got changed to the side with something a bit more presentable while Lupita stayed in her clothes as well as wrapping herself in a blanket and holding the pillow. As they were about to leave Lupita softly tugged at Ambrosia's shirt.

"I can't walk," she whispered and looked down. "Very weak and tired."

"I'll carry you down," Ambrosia said and crouched down in front of her. "Piggyback or carry?" she asked.

"Carry," Lupita said with a small smile and put out her good arm. Ambrosia carefully placed her arms around Lupita's butt and made sure she wouldn't trip on the blanket before they walked down the stairs.

Voices were bustling about as they walked down the stairs but they quickly stopped as the three came down. The first people Ambrosia noticed were Bella and Gulterio. They were standing in the kitchen with the other adults and talked in hushed voices while the younger ones sat by the sofa.

They all stared at them as Ambrosia carefully made her way to the couch and placed Lupita on it as the others moved out of the way. Once she was seated, Ambrosia crouched beside her and gave her a questioning smile to which she received a reassuring one.

"What did you do?" Jazmyn said as she came up beside her. "What is going on?"

"Did you just arrive?" Ambrosia asked and stood up to be able to look down at the halfling, only to be pulled down to sit beside Lupita.

"Yes!" Jazmyn exclaimed, causing Lupita to shrink and hide in the pillow. Ambrosia was quick to put an arm around her shoulder and softly rubbed circles on her skin.

"I didn't do anything," Ambrosia said and glared at the halfling. "Believe it or not there are worse people in the world."

"As if," Jazmyn scoffed and crossed her arms.

"Jazmyn," Elizabeth called out to the girl who turned to her mother. "Come with me and I'll tell you all about it."

"Fine," she said and threw one last glare at Ambrosia before following her mother to a different room.

"How is she?" Abeba asked and came over to them with a small tray which she sat on the table in front of them before sitting in front of Lupita.

"It hurts," Ambrosia said and looked at Lupita who was slowly leaning onto her. "She said her arm, face, and throat hurt. And she still hasn't recovered mentally." She was vaguely aware that everyone was staring at them and slightly adjusted herself.

"It's to be expected," Abeba said and handed her a glass of what looked like water. "This will help with the physical pain. Only time can heal the mental hurt." Lupita nodded and carefully took the cup in her hands and began to slowly sip on the drink.

Bella came over to them, placed herself behind Ambrosia, and carefully placed her hands on her shoulders. Ambrosia moved her head back to look at the woman. She was smiling sadly and began to stroke her hair.

"Have you behaved?" she asked jokingly and Ambrosia chuckled and rolled her eyes.

"For the most part," MJ said which made Ambrosia look up and glare at her friend. "She is scary," MJ whispered, though she knew everyone could hear.

"What did you do?" Bella asked and raised an eyebrow.

"Um," Ambrosia began but didn't want to continue. It was fine admitting it in front of her Bella, Gulterio, and her friends, but not these other people.

"It's fine," Lupita said and looked at the woman. "She's fine."

"Ok then," she said and went to touch Lupita's hair. The girl ducked out of the way and Bella quickly retracted her hand. "We'll talk about it when we leave," Bella said. "I'm assuming you don't want to stay."

"I don't mind staying for a little while," Ambrosia said and felt a weight on her shoulder and a sadness enter her heart. Her hand went to the wolf's hair without having to think twice and she smiled. "I'm sorry," she whispered.

"It's fine," Lupita said but snuggled further into her. "You need time."

Ambrosia smiled and looked at Bella who had a similar smile, only cockier.

"Did I miss something?" she asked and straightened up when Gulterio came up beside her.

"A lot," North said. "About everything, not just whatever this is." She gestured to the two on the couch with mock disgust.

"Did you accept each other finally?" Mai asked from her wheelchair. The mermaid had been strangely silent. Ambrosia often heard her from across the food hall, yet she was barely uttering a single word until now.

"No," Lupita replied for her. "She needs some time."

"How much time does-" North began but was whacked in the head by both Aoi and Val.

"Not everyone here has the mating instinct of werewolves," Valeria said and ruffled their hair. "You should know that."

"That doesn't excuse being a b-"

"Shut it!"

They all stayed silent and Ambrosia quickly grabbed Lupita's shoulders as she launched forward. Her eyes glowed red. They had been doing that a lot these past few hours.

"Wow," MJ said and came closer but quickly backed away when Lupita growled. "That is fascinating," she whispered and looked at the others. "Isn't it?"

"We don't share your excitement for magic and death wolves, Jones," North spat. "But what is it?"

"You won't get anything out of me with that tone," MJ said while turning her back to the couch.

"She doesn't know what it is," Cass said. She was sitting on a high chair in the kitchen. "None of us do."

"I have a small theory. It just isn't that foolproof yet," MJ said as Lupita slowly came back to herself and slumped against Ambrosia's chest. "Interesting."

"Do you want to share your theory?" North asked as Ambrosia carefully looked Lupita over when she made herself comfortable against her.

"Nope," MJ said with a big smile. "I need to find out more about it, and ask her when she gets to her senses."

"You witches really are annoying," North said and leaned back in her chair. The three witches in the room shared a look but didn't say anything to begin with.

"You really said that?" Cass asked. "That's brave, I'll tell you that. Luckily we are in a small space."

"Sorry," North said and lowered their head.

"But you do have some idea of what it may be then?" Ambrosia asked to take the focus away from the wolf.

"Yeah, but I'm not sure. It would make sense though," MJ said and scratched her head. "I'll do some research and tell you if I find something."

"Ok, thanks," Ambrosia said while scratching Lupita behind her ear. She began to softly purr as her breathing became even. "I think she's falling asleep," she whispered.

"That is a side effect of the painkillers," Abeba said. She then carefully took Lupita's bandaged arm and passed a clear crystal over it. The crystal remained clear the whole time, and when Abeba took it away, she smiled. "We got most of it out of her, so now it is just up to her to fight off the little that got into her system before we got to it. It shouldn't be too dangerous."

"And with the mate bond she should be able to do it faster," North said. "Even though you haven't accepted her, it should still have some effects."

"She plans to leave though," Aoi said. "Won't that mess with something or make her weaker?"

"It would," North said and scowled at Ambrosia. "But I think she has had enough time. She should be able to do it on her own after this. Though I would advise you to stay until she feels better."

Ambrosia stayed silent as she looked down at the sleeping werewolf. Her features were relaxed and her chest rumbled as she purred. She needed her to stay.

"Don't stay," Lupita whispered.

"Lupi," Val said softly and came over to them. "You need to get better. This magic is helping you. None of us can give you that here."

"Can't you do that?" Ambrosia asked. She knew kitsunes had healing abilities.

"No," the fox said and her face turned red. "I can only calm someone."

"She won't stay," Lupita said, changing the subject. "I'll be fine. Been through worse." She slowly sat up. Everyone was watching her at this point and Ambrosia realized how the girl began rubbing the scar in her palm. She gave her, her hand, and the wolf instantly began playing with the steel rings on her fingers. "I can do this. And she needs time. Don't blame her."

"Lupita is right," MJ said. "They need time to process everything."

"Are you kidding?!" North exclaimed, standing up. "She needs to take responsibility for what she has done. Lupita almost died! And she just gets to walk away?! Because it's too much to stay with the one you are destined to be with?"

"Shut up North!" Rowan exclaimed and stood in front of her. "You were lucky to find someone who understood you and who hadn't gone through a whole ass transition in their life! I agree, she needs to take responsibility, but she is doing it. She is talking to Lupita. They already discussed this. Let them decide what they want to do and what feels right for them. If Ambrosia needs to leave to sort out all the shit that is happening, then she'll do that. If she is willing to stay and power through her headaches, she'll do that. You don't get to dictate what they do."

North stayed silent, but her face was beet red. They slowly sat down and Rowan was pulled back by MJ who then hugged his waist. Had he been able to, he would be a deep red and breathing heavily at this point. Ambrosia could see his shoulders move up and down, almost mimicking the action of breathing.

"Trust me, I know what she is going through. And MJ will know what Lupita is going through. It will be a lot better when they just get to process everything. I realize that werewolves are a certain way, but so are vampires. And Bambi is her own person, she needs to process things differently." Ambrosia smiled at the nickname. He never usually used nicknames, but it warmed her heart when he did.

"Relax love," MJ said and moved him to sit down. "But I do agree," she said and sat down in his lap. "Ambrosia needs time to think. It's the way she works. Give her time and you won't be able to separate them."

"True," Ambrosia said in a small voice while keeping a careful eye on Lupita who was slightly swaying while she sat. "Believe me, I just want to accept it and leave this all behind me. But I can't, and I don't want it to weigh me down while I try to be a good girlfriend." Lupita turned around and Ambrosia felt it tug at the corner of her mouth when the wolf showed her the biggest smile. "I don't need a lot of time, believe me. A week maybe."

"Take as long as you need," Lupita whispered and leaned back on the couch. "But visit?"

"If they let me in," Ambrosia said and realized how long it had been since Elizabeth took Jazmyn out of the room.

"Fine," North grunted, sitting back down with Valeria sitting on their lap. The fox glowed softly, making the white wolf sink back in her chair. "How dare you," North mumbled. Valeria smiled and leaned back while still glowing.

"I would say your powers work great Val," Aoi suddenly said. Ambrosia leaned forward and saw him sitting on the floor while leaning his head on Mai's leg. "You get North to shut up." Everyone laughed a little at that, and the atmosphere lifted. They all began speaking among themselves and seemed to avoid talking about anything that happened in the past 24 hours.

Ambrosia quickly realized that Lupita was fidgeting more with her rings and her breathing became uneven. Her face was also hidden in her shoulder as the people around them became louder.

"You want to go upstairs?" she asked the wolf as quietly as she could. However, it didn't matter as everyone around her heard and slowly made their way into the kitchen. "I'll carry you up the stairs."

"Will you stay with me?" Lupita asked in a small voice as she looked up at Ambrosia with her big doe eyes.

"Of course," Ambrosia answered and carefully picked up the girl as she had before and carried her up the stairs. They made their way back up the stairs, to North's bedroom, and Ambrosia carefully placed the girl on the edge of the bed. "What do you want to do?" she asked as she stood in front of the girl. "We have a lot of time so we can do almost anything you want. Within reason."

Lupita smiled and carefully reached out her arms, wrapped her arms around Ambrosia's waist, and pulled her close to her. "What do humans do... to get a partner?" she asked.

"Well," Ambrosia said and began running her hands through Lupita's hair and smiled when she felt the girl's head push into her. "We usually ask the other person questions to get to know them to see if we want to be with them. I'm guessing it's different for you?"

"It is," Lupita said and looked up at Ambrosia. "But I want you to be comfortable. So we can do it your way."

"That's nice, but we can do it your way as well," she said and cupped Lupita's cheeks. "But let's start. What is your favorite color?" Lupita tilted her head and Ambrosia didn't hide her smile as she admired her adorableness.

"This is what you ask your forever person?" she asked with her brows furrowed. Ambrosia chuckled and nodded. "Forest green."

"Mine is a deep red," Ambrosia said. "Kind of funny considering I'm a vampire. Next question," she said and slowly swayed back and forth. "Favourite food?"

"Meat. Especially reindeer," Lupita said and closed her eyes as she swayed with Ambrosia.

"Mine used to be lasagna," Ambrosia said with a sad smile. "Now human food tastes like nothing and feels weird in my mouth."

"I'm sorry," Lupita said and softly stopped the swaying. "Can you eat anything?"

"I can eat but I don't like it. So blood and drinking are really the only things I can have, and since I haven't had any blood, I usually just drink."

"Do you want blood?" Lupita suddenly asked and Ambrosia stiffened. "Sorry."

"No, don't be," Ambrosia said, resting her hands on Lupita's shoulders. "I'm hoping that I'll be able to turn human if I don't drink any blood for a year. Though I don't think it will work."

"Well, if you need blood, you can have mine," Lupita said and Ambrosia smiled at her.

"Thanks, though hopefully, I won't need it," Ambrosia said while moving one of her hands to Lupita's cheek and slowly caressing it. "What do you like to do in your free time?"

"I used to run around in the forest," Lupita began and slowly moved back on the bed, dragging Ambrosia after her. "But I also just like relaxing, and spending time with people." They slowly moved fully onto the bed and Lupita forced them both to lay down. Ambrosia just smiled through it all and pulled the girl to her. She ignored the pounding in her head and focused on trying to be there for the broken girl.

They stayed like this for hours, holding each other and just talking. Ambrosia found out that Lupita wasn't a fan of speaking but she reassured Ambrosia that she liked speaking with her. She also didn't like being alone but didn't want to be around strangers. They didn't fully get into Lupita's past since Ambrosia tried to avoid it like the plague, but she did get a few childhood memories from the wolf. She was hidden from others for most of her childhood, but she had great parents who loved her for as long as they could.

"I would have liked to meet your parents," Ambrosia said as she lay on her back and looked at the ceiling. The werewolf had her head on her stomach while Ambrosia's hand rested in her hair.

"I would hate to meet yours," Lupita spat. They had very briefly touched on the subject of Ambrosia's birth parents, but she didn't want them to be a big subject as she had limited time with the girl. But she said what was important. They were assholes and horrible people.

"Don't linger on them," Ambrosia said and scratched her scalp causing the girl to purr louder. "They don't matter and they aren't a part of my life anymore. And you have other things to think about, so don't bother." She could see Lupita's breath hitch as the red crystal on her collar glowed before returning to its normal red. "I-I mean," she stuttered, realizing what she had done. "Do what you want, but..."

"It's fine," Lupita said and carefully rubbed the skin around the collar. "Not so important."

"I'm sorry I did that to you," Ambrosia said and carefully touched the collar. "Did you find out how to get you out of it?"

Lupita shrugged and moved to her side to be able to look at Ambrosia. "I don't know. But it's not so bad when it's you."

Ambrosia quickly looked away and tried to hide the smile that plastered itself on her lips. She felt terrible for what she had done, but she was glad Lupita seemingly didn't mind too much. Especially considering she hadn't used it at all, which might have won her some points with Lupita.

"Don't worry about it," Lupita said and carefully moved to lean on her good hand and slowly moved upward. Ambrosia could feel her heart rate pick up as the girl slowly came closer and closer. They had talked about how Ambrosia didn't feel quite ready to do the more typical relationship things yet, but she had let it slip that she knew it wasn't what she truly wanted. Lupita was now inches away from her face, her breath felt hot against her lips and her eyes stared deeply into her own. Ambrosia could feel her weak heart beat against her ribcage as she clenched the bedsheets in her hands. Lupita carefully leaned forward and nuzzled her nose with Ambrosia's before moving and nuzzling into her cheek.

Ambrosia let out a breath and returned the affection, both disappointed and grateful for the girl not kissing her. Was kissing even normal in werewolf culture? Was this the equivalent of a kiss?

"I hope you don't mind," Lupita said as she settled on Ambrosia's chest.

"Was that something good or...?" she questioned and ran her fingers through the girl's wavy hair.

"Very," Lupita said and wrapped her wounded arm over Ambrosia's waist. "Don't get mad, but it could be kind of like a kiss to humans... I'm guessing."

Ambrosia smiled and pulled the girl closer, hesitating for a moment before kissing the top of her head. "It's very ok," she said and squeezed the girl to her chest. "I promise to be quick. I'll come back to you and then we can be together. I just need this headache to stop, and my thoughts sorted out."

"Have you been in pain all this time?" Lupita asked and stared up at her.

"Yeah," Ambrosia said and felt Lupita's concern radiate off her. "But don't worry, I've been having a great time. The pain hasn't been so bad either, so don't worry." She was only half lying as she said it. Her head had been pounding as she pushed all her thoughts to the back of her head. She wanted to focus on staying in the moment and taking care of Lupita. And maybe the fact that she hadn't had any blood in almost a year also had something to do with it.

"When are you leaving?" Lupita suddenly said and Ambrosia groaned. She didn't want to leave, but she needed to. She needed to think.

"Soon, I think," Ambrosia said and checked her phone. It was nearing midnight! They really had talked for a while. And now, more than ever, she knew she wanted to be with this girl, though the mate bond was still scary. Up until today, she hadn't been the physically affectionate type of person, but now, she didn't want to let go of the wolf. While it was nice, it scared her how different yet right she felt.

"You should get ready," Lupita said and slowly got off her. Ambrosia weakly held onto her and whined at the loss of contact. How was she able to change this much in just a few hours? She couldn't remember the last time she acted this way toward someone. "You are in pain," Lupita said with a small smile at hearing her whine. She was sitting up and looking at Ambrosia, her eyes sparkling as they met. "And I want you to think, to know this is what you want... That I am what you want."

Ambrosia sat up and gave the girl a soft smile. "I know what I want, don't worry. I just need to sort out everything else and finally accept it."

"Yeah, but..." Lupita began rubbing her palms and looked away. "You might change your mind when you figure everything out. And I wouldn't blame you... if you did."

"I won't change my mind, trust me," Ambrosia said, took her hands, and carefully began stroking the scar on her palm. "Whatever this magic is, I feel it. And while it is scary, I just need to accept it and understand it. So don't worry about it. I'll come right back to you." A wave of emotions flew over her, making her feel warm and good.

"Ok," Lupita whispered as tears ran down her cheeks, but they weren't sad, Ambrosia felt it deep in her bones. She was happy, and that made Ambrosia happy. She would do anything to keep her feeling like this.

A knock sounded at the door and they both flinched. Ambrosia turned while squeezing Lupita's hand and saw Bella standing in the doorframe. How had she not heard her coming?

"We were planning to leave soon," she said and leaned on the doorframe. "We want to get there before the first sunlight."

"Where are we going?" Ambrosia asked and started stroking Lupita's hands with her thumbs, saving the little bit of contact they still had.

"To the cabin," Bela answered. "Away from people and in nature. You'll have plenty of time to think both away from us and with us."

"Ok," Ambrosia said and turned to Lupita who was already looking at her. "I won't be able to visit, but I promise I'll call. And I promise I won't take too long."

"Don't rush," Lupita whispered, leaning in and embracing her and nuzzling into her neck. "Elsker deg."

"What was that?" Ambrosia asked as she hugged her back.

"You'll see," Lupita said and Ambrosia felt her grin into her neck.

"Ok," Ambrosia said as she nuzzled into her neck as well, savoring the amazing scent. "I'll be back soon." She pulled back and slowly moved toward Bela, quickly pecking Lupita on the forehead before completely leaving the room.

"You have made progress," Bella said as they walked down the stairs. "But don't rush yourself, take your time and talk to us."

"I will," Ambrosia promised.
