Dante: Chapter 34
Dante: A Dark Mafia, Enemies to Lovers Romance (Chicago Ruthless Book 1)
The door closes behind her, and I sit in stunned silence. She says Iâve won, so why do I feel like I just lost? Because I donât want to win with her, and definitely not like this. Seeing her so broken feels like a shard of ice slicing through my heart.
I could throttle my sister for telling Kat about my fatherâs ridiculous ultimatum. Joey causes way too much drama around here. I need to find her something to do to keep her occupied before she drives my wife-to-be, and by default me, completely crazy.
Joey is in the den when I find her a few minutes later.
âHey,â she says with a grin when I walk into the room, completely oblivious to the carnage she has caused in my life today.
I take a seat on the armchair. âWhy are you so cruel to her, Joey?â
She blinks at me. âCruel to who?â
âMother fucking Teresa,â I snap. âKat, obviously. Who the hell do you think I mean?â
âIâm not cruel to her. Iâm a goddamn ray of sunshine,â she snaps back at me.
âSo why the hell did you tell her about Pop? About what he said about marrying her?â
âOh,â she winces as she screws the lid onto her nail polish bottle. âI didnât do that on purpose actually. It just kind of slipped out.â
âWell, sheâs fucking furious with me about it, and sheâsâ¦â I sigh.
âSheâs what?â
I swallow as emotion balls in my throat. âSheâs really upset. I really fucked up this time.â
âYou fuck up all the time where sheâs concerned. You two fight and make up. Itâs kind of your thing.â
I run a hand through my hair and lean back against the soft armchair. âI donât think I can fix this one so easily, Joey.â
âWhy? What did she say?â
âShe thinks Iâm only marrying her because I have no choice. She mentioned Nicole. She asked me if Pop had given me the same ultimatum when I agreed to marry her.â
âOuch.â
âThen she asked if Nicole was pregnant too.â
Joey winces. âDouble ouch.â
âExactly.â I run my hands through my hair and sigh.
âSo, did you tell her the truth?â she asks, as though it would be that simple.
âYou know I canât. Not yet.â
âYou donât trust her?â
When my sister isnât being a bitch, sheâs kind of good to talk to. âI donât know. Sheâs not from our world, Joey. If she knew everythingâ¦â
âI get it. But the alternative is she hates you for what she thinks you did.â
âBetter than her hating me for what I actually did.â
âMaybe. But I figure if she doesnât hate you already, thereâs nothing much could change that.â
âBut she does hate me, Joey.â
âOh, donât be so dramatic. Of course she doesnât. But there is an easy fix to your current problem.â
âThere is?â
âYes,â she says with a roll of her eyes.
âThen enlighten me, little sister.â
âForget about the Nicole situation for now. Kat thinks what she thinks and she loves you anyway. So this is about her thinking that you donât really want to marry her. So prove that you do, Dante.â
âHow? She said she doesnât believe a word that comes out of my mouth anymore.â
âSo donât speak, jackass.â
I groan and drop my head in my hands. âStop talking in riddles, Joey.â
âYou still have great Grandmaâs old ring, right?â
âYes.â
âYou know that thing is magical?â
âApparently so,â I say, feeling a flicker of hope, despite never believing such fairy stories.
âI happen to know what Katâs favorite food is. Itâs salted caramel cheesecake from Monaâs Bakery.â
I look at my watch and sigh. âTheyâll be closing in an hour and I have to deal with something.â
As if on cue, Maximo walks into the room to remind me that I need to leave.
âThen Iâll go,â Joey says excitedly. âSeeing as Iâm partly responsible for this mess, let me help fix it?â
âI canât spare enough men to take you and guard the house right now.â
âMax can take me,â she says, giving him her best puppy dog eyes. âYou can do your thing without him, right?â
I look at Maximo who is staring at me in bewilderment.
âThis is for Kat, Dante,â Joey reminds me.
âYou think you could even get there in time?â I ask her.
âIf we leave now,â she says, jumping up from the sofa.
âWhere the hell are we going?â Maximo interrupts us.
âA bakery,â Joey replies. âBut it closes in less than an hour.â
âWeâd have to take the bike,â Maximo adds, and Joeyâs eyes light up like a Christmas tree.
I look at the man I trust more than anyone else in the world. âYouâll take care of her?â
âI always do, D,â he says with a frown.
âFine. Go get me a cheesecake and Iâll ask Sophia to make the best lasagna of her life.â
âIs something big happening?â Maximo asks with a frown.
âDante is going to propose to Kat with Grandmaâs ring,â Joey says with a flutter of her eyelashes.
Maximo grins. âAbout time, compagno.â
