Dante: Chapter 37
Dante: A Dark Mafia, Enemies to Lovers Romance (Chicago Ruthless Book 1)
Lorenzoâs heavy footfall echoes around the empty hallway as we head to the study. My study. It could have been his. It should have been.
âIs he here? In Chicagoâ he barks, breaking the silence.
âNo, heâs gone to the Keys for a week with his new side piece,â I reply, aware heâs referring to our father. âNo fatted calf for the prodigal son today.â
Lorenzo snorts.
I open the door and step aside to allow him in first. As soon as itâs closed behind us, he turns to me, and in here where there is just the two of us, he lets the mask slip. There is so much sadness in his eyes that it makes me feel like the air is being sucked from the room.
âIs it back?â I ask him.
âMore aggressive this time.â
âIâm so sorry, brother.â
He nods, defeated.
âIâm sorry you had to come back.â After Anyaâs cancer went into remission, Lorenzo decided to take a couple of years off and has been living in Lake Como with his wife for the past two years.
âIt was inevitable. We couldnât stay out there in paradise forever. Besides, the best specialists are here,â he says with a shrug. âAnd learning of your upcoming wedding and the fact sheâs about to become an aunt has given my Anya a huge boost. So, thank you.â
I could tell him that his wife and the woman for whom he believes the sun sets and rises is going to be okay. That sheâll beat it again like she did before, but we both know that may not be true and thatâs not what we do for each other. He wouldnât appreciate false hope. Lorenzo is a realist. So instead I tell him the only other truth that matters right now.
âIâve fucking missed you, Loz.â
âMissed you too, D,â he says, throwing his arms around me.
We hug each other fiercely, and I choke up as the years weâve spent apart fall away and I remember how good life is when this man is at my side. Despite my fatherâs best efforts, he could never drive a wedge between us. I would die for him in a heartbeat and he would do the same for me. There has always been the three of us â him, Maximo and me. There is no ego between us. None of us care who the outside world believes us to be. We are equals in each otherâs eyes and we always will be.
âIâm sorry I was away for so long, brother,â he says as he steps back.
âYou donât have to apologize. You did what you had to do. Maybe one day, Iâll run off to paradise for a few years and leave you to run things.â
âYou only have to say the word,â he replies with a smirk, but I know that he means it.
âSo, what do you think of Kat?â
âAny woman that can handle you must be something special. Do you want to marry her? Truly?â
My answer comes without hesitation. âYes.â
âThen Iâm happy for you both.â
âYou think this will be okay?â Kat asks as she smooths down the fabric of the blue wrap dress over the slight curve of her stomach. âItâs not too tight?â
âItâs only dinner in the kitchen like we have every night, kitten,â I remind her.
âNo, itâs not just dinner. Itâs dinner with your brother, who terrifies me.â
I slide my arms around her waist and press her close to me. âYou have no need to be terrified of him, and even if you did, Iâll protect you.â
âI think he doesnât like me,â she whispers.
âHe doesnât like most people, but I promise he likes you. Did you enjoy talking to Anya?â
âYes, I did.â
That doesnât surprise me. Most people light up like that when they talk about my sister-in-law. Sheâs one of those people who can put anyone at ease.
âBut she wasâ¦â She chews on her bottom lip as she stares into my eyes.
âShe was what?â
âDifferent around him? Like not herself?â
âOh,â I say with a nod of understanding. âI probably should have told you something about their dynamic.â
âTheir dynamic?â she blinks at me.
âDid you see the diamond necklace she wears?â
âYes. It was stunning.â
âItâs not a necklace, kitten, itâs a collar.â
She frowns. âA collar? Like for a pet?â
âNo, a collar for a submissive. Lorenzo is a dominant and Anya is his submissive as well as his wife.â
âI-I mean Iâve read about them in books, but how does that work? Does he control everything she does?â
âI donât know, Kat. Itâs their personal business, but I do know theyâre both very much devoted to each other and very happy.â
âOkay,â she says with a frown.
âWhat?â
âShe just seemed a little afraid of him when they were together in the hall.â
I laugh out loud at that because the thought of Anya being scared of Lorenzo is one of the funniest things Iâve ever heard. I mean it shouldnât be â he makes grown men shit their pants â but Anya has him wrapped around her little finger. âTrust me she isnât the slightest bit afraid of him. They have a power exchange, yes, and he controls a lot of aspects of her life, but itâs a consensual one, which they navigate together as a couple. Sometimes, they will appear like any other couple, and other times, like today, he takes control. He often does when theyâre in a new or unfamiliar situation, like meeting you today. You should talk to her about it.â
âSo are they into BDSM?â she whispers.
âNo idea. Itâs none of our business what they do in private.â I laugh at her curiosity because it is so nice to have these open conversations with her after months of frustration and miscommunication.
She wraps her arms around my neck. âSo, you and Lorenzo are good then?â
âHeâs my brother, Kat. Of course weâre good.â
âWell, we both know that simply being related by blood does not guarantee a happy and respectful relationship,â she says, and I donât miss the tears pricking her eyes as she blinks them away.
I brush her hair back from her face. âWhenever I see your brother again, I will thank him for bringing you to me.â
That makes her blush, and that makes my cock twitch. âThere are rumors about you and Lorenzo though, did you know that?â
âThat I stole his crown and we hate each other?â I ask, aware of such idle gossip.
âYes.â
âYou should never believe everything you hear, kitten.â I press a kiss on the tip of her nose, and she sighs contentedly.
âAre there any other rumors that arenât true that I should know about?â she whispers.
âSophia will have dinner waiting,â I tell her, avoiding the question and taking her hand. âAnd if you think Lorenzo was terrifying earlier, then wait until you see him when heâs hungry.â
She laughs and the sound is so carefree and sweet that it makes my heart sink. One day, sheâs going to find out the truth about the other rumors, and I wonder if sheâll forgive me for keeping it from her.
