Chapter 29: Epilogue
The Billionaire's Dirty Laundry
HARLAND
I scrubbed my hands over my face, blowing out a slow breath while I listened to the weather alert. A blizzard was tracking toward Maine, bringing upwards of ten feet of snow.
~Ten feet.~
That was a fuck of a lot of snow.
Ellie came down the stairs with a look of defeat.
âNo luck?â
âNope.â
â~Fuck.~â
âLanguage, Dad.â
âNow is not the time, Ellie,â I warned before storming out the front door. I leaned on the porch railing, studying the ominous sky. I had to find a way to get Kinley to Houlton.
ASAP.
But my wife was deep in pregnancy hormone hell, and I couldnât get through to her. Nobody could. Ellie had been my last hope.
Kinley was two days overdue. The doctor had been out that morning to check her, and sheâd been one centimeter dilated. And she still wouldnât get in the damn car and go to a hotel in the city.
I heard the front door open and turned to find my mother standing behind me. âIf you want to be alone, Iâll leave,â she offered.
âNo. Stay.â
My mother and I had come a long way in our relationship over the past several months.
After Kinley and Ellie convinced me to forgive her, we started talking, and she divorced her latest husband and moved in with us, leaving her assistant to manage her gallery.
She was going to run an art therapy program at the retreat when it opened.
âEllie really gave it her all,â she chuckled. âYour wife is one stubborn woman.â
I sighed. âTell me about it.â
âSheâs bawling her eyes out right now.â
âWhat set her off?â
âShe peed her pants.â
âGreat.â
She glanced at the sky. âYouâve got to get her to town.â
âIâm aware. Sheâs not delivering the baby here. Enough is enough.â
***
I opened the bedroom door slowly, peeking inside to assess the threat level. Kinley was lying on her side with her back to me.
Our bedroom was cozy, with a king-size bed and a fireplace, and the walls were adorned with paintings by my mother and Ellie.
I hadnât been completely sold on the modern farmhouse design at first. After all, I went from living in a mansion littered with antiques to an ultramodern penthouse in New York City.
But the first time I stepped into our completed house, I knew it was perfect. It was ~home~. Our home.
I smiled when my eyes landed on our wedding picture on the dresser. We got married on the beach in Florida a few days after our hospital room engagement, with only Ellie and the grandparents in attendance.
It was a perfect day. As was every day that followed. Because I was married to the woman I loved.
I tiptoed across the hardwood floor. Maybe I could carry her out to the car without waking her up.
~Yeah right, dumbass.~
âIâm not deaf,â she snapped. âI heard you coming. And I can hear your annoying wheezing.â
~Okey dokey. Threat level is high. Donât provoke her.~ I circled the bed and sat down next to her.
She glared at me when the mattress sank down, causing her to roll backward. âDo you know how long it took me to get comfortable, Harland?â
âSorry, honey.â
âSaying sorry is completely useless. How does it undo the damage?â
âWhat damage?â
âThe disruption of my pillows, ~Harland~.â
âI can fix them,â I assured her.
âYou never get it right. Only Ellie knows how I need them.â
âWould you like me to fetch her?â
âShe wonât come!â she cried, her eyes exploding with a powerful rush of tears. âI was horrible to her!â
âIâm sure sheâll still help you. She understands youâre not feeling like yourself right now.â
âNo, she doesnât,â she hiccuped, her chest shaking with violent sobs.
I took a deep breath, covering my balls with my hand, just in case. âKinley, we really need to head to town. Right now.â
âOkay.â
âOkay?â
âItâs starting to snow,â she said, gesturing to the window.
I cursed under my breath when I saw the snow swirling around outside. âWe need to leave right now.â
âHelp me up, then.â
I reached under her arm, hoisting her up.
âI have to pee before we go.â
âNo time for that, Kinley.â
âHarland! It will only take a minute.â
I closed my eyes, my patience dwindling.
âDad!â Ellie called, stepping through the partially open door. âItâs starting to snow.â
âI have eyes,â I grumbled, watching Kinley shuffle across the floor like we had all the time in the world. âYou need to hurry, babe.â
âIâm moving as fast as I can!â
I glanced at Ellie and rolled my eyes.
âI saw that,â Kinley snapped.
***
I paced back and forth, watching the storm worsen by the minute. âWhat the fuck is taking her so long?â I muttered.
âSheâs probably stuck on the toilet,â Ellie suggested.
âFor fuckâs sake.â I shored up the tiny bit of patience left in my body before knocking on the bathroom door. âHoney, do you need some help?â
No answer.
âIâm coming in, Kinley.â I turned the knob, opening the door slowly. My wife was standing in the shower, her face writhed in pain while ~stuff ~leaked from her naked lower half.
âPlease donât be mad at me,â she begged.
âWe need to get you to the hospital, Kinley.â
âNo kidding!â she cried, bracing her hands on the wall as she doubled over. âThe baby is coming!â
âI can see that,â I said, shoving down the panic bubbling in my gut. âLetâs get you out of there before you fall.â
âNo,â she panted. âI donât wanna make a mess.â
âI donât care about the mess, sweetheart,â I said, reaching for her arm. âCâmon, baby. Take my arm.â
âI need some pants! We have a houseful of people. Do you want them to see my cunt?â
I cringed, wisely suppressing a laugh that would undoubtedly earn me a tongue-lashing or worse. Ellie didnât possess the same level of self-control. I heard her chuckling on the other side of the bathroom door.
âCan you grab Kinley some panties?â I called.
âYes!â I heard her opening drawers, muttering to herself about boundaries before she knocked on the bathroom door. âIâm gonna go downstairs. Everything you need is on the floor outside the door.â
âI need to lie down,â Kinley moaned.
âOkay, honey.â I helped her to the bed, her concern about mess and modesty clearly forgotten.
âThe baby is coming!â she cried.
I glanced at the window, fear coursing through my veins. We were having a home birth. One we were totally unprepared for.
âHarland!â my mother called, knocking lightly on the door. âEllie said you might need some assistance.â
âCrystal!â Ellie screamed. âGet in here!â
My mother entered the room and immediately took over, barking orders at me while she tended to my wife.
I wouldnât hand control over to my mother in any other situation, but the truth is, Iâm squeamish when it comes to bodily fluids and females and anything related to that department. And I was terrified.
So much so that I almost had a bodily-fluid situation of my own.
âI need to push!â Kinley screamed.
âHold on, honey,â Mom said. âWeâre almost ready. You have the doctor on the screen, Ellie?â
âYes,â she replied, holding up her tablet.
âIâll take that,â I said. âYou need to go out in the hall.â
âWhy?â
âYes, Harland,â my mother chuckled. âWhy does Ellie have to leave?â
âBecause sheâs a kid. Itâs not appropriate.â
âDad,â Ellie sighed, shaking her head. âIâm thirteen. I know where babies come from. Iâve watched several births online. And Iâve seen a vagina before. I have one.â
âPlease donât say things like that.â
âStop being such a weirdo.â
âI donât give a flying fuck who sees my vagina!â Kinley cried. âPlease!â
âEllie stays,â my mother ordered, glaring at me. âYou hold your wifeâs hand and coach her. Thatâs your only job.â
I sat next to Kinley, brushing her sweaty hair from her forehead. âAre you ready, sweetheart?â
âI was ready twenty minutes ago!â
âOkay. Letâs do this.â
***
I gazed down at the baby sucking on my wifeâs breast. His eyes were closed, his mouth going at her nipple like he was born knowing how to do it. ~I guess itâs a natural instinct.~
âDoes that feel weird?â I whispered, brushing my fingers over his bald head.
âA little,â Kinley giggled.
âI canât believe heâs here. We have a son.â
âI know.â She smiled up at me, tears swimming in her beautiful eyes. âThank you, Harland. Youâve given me everything Iâve ever wanted. Iâm so lucky.â
âIâm the lucky one, sweetheart.â
âCan I come in?â Ellie asked, hovering in the doorway of our bedroom.
âOf course,â Kinley said, patting the bed.
Ellie crossed the room and climbed in next to us, grinning at her brother. âWhat a little pig.â She chuckled. âTake a breath, kid.â
âHeâs a big boy,â I said. âLet him eat.â
âWhatâs his name?â
Kinley glanced at me. âGo ahead.â
âHarrison George Hollingbrook,â I announced, my heart bursting with pride.
âI like it,â Ellie whispered. âWelcome to our family, Harrison.â
Kinley sighed. âI feel so content. Our family is complete.â
âNo way, Mrs. Hollingbrook,â I teased, leaning down to kiss my wife. âWeâre just getting started.â
^The End^
