Chelsea was calling Shaun.

"I'll take this outside."

Shaun walked out with his phone.

Madeline huffed, "Why does he have to go outside just to answer a call? Seriously!"

Halsey figured maybe Shaun and Chelsea were going to talk for a while-sweet talk and all that. Probably not something they wanted anyone overhearing.

She smiled. "Don't worry about him. Hurry up and finish your sandwich."

Madeline picked up her food. "I'll call someone later and ask them to bring you something sour. Do you want fruit or sour candy?"

Halsey looked at her and smiled.

Shaun never came back after taking the call. Halsey and Madeline showered and then lay down in bed together.

Halsey asked, "Did Shaun go back to the office?"

She figured Shaun's company kept him busy, and he probably wouldn't come back since it was quite late.

Madeline replied, "I think so. I texted him, but he didn't reply. He's probably tied up with something."

That was just as well. His presence only made Halsey more restless.

Halsey pulled the blanket up over Madeline. "Go to sleep. Resting is the best way to get better."

Madeline snuggled under the covers with her. "You should sleep early, too. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

Madeline fell asleep quickly, but Halsey couldn't stop tossing and turning.

Normally, she loved sleep. But ever since Shaun had shown up, her mind had been in a mess.

Was he still at work now? Or was he with Chelsea? What were they doing?

Halsey tried not to think about it, but she couldn't stop her thoughts from spinning. Her mind was full of Shaun.

Then she heard a soft click as the door creaked open. She jolted up from the bed. "Who's there?

She thought it might be a thief.

A second later, she saw who it was.

Shaun had come back.

He walked over to the bed. The room was softly lit with a warm yellow glow. Halsey and Madeline were curled up together under the blankets, and the air carried the faint scent of something sweet and girly. It was warm and peaceful.

Halsey sat up sleepily, her big, round eyes still groggy and dazed. She looked like a little confused bunny, and for a moment, Shaun's heart softened.

He came to her side and handed her a small shopping bag. "Here. For you." Halsey blinked. "What is it?"

She took the bag and opened it. Inside were all kinds of sweet and sour treats.

She froze for a second and looked up at him. "You bought these?"

Shaun raised an eyebrow. "What do you think?"

Halsey's heart gave a little skip.
