I was getting prepared for the practice match with another business school partner in another country of our own school. It's been weeks since I've been part of the club and surprisingly the seniors really know what they are doing. The only problem was that the other five new recruits weren't as experienced. We did a hell of a practice those past few days.
I slipped on my oversized shirt and shorts. That sleepover with Venus last Friday and the fact that we are already dating â well, kinda, is making me energetic. I better show our club's skills.
The club focuses more on playing for fun and of course winning is a bonus. The club has never participated in any tournaments, but that doesn't mean they would want just anyone to join. Playing basketball requires team effort and if one member isn't serious about basketball, it would just ruin the teamplay.
I scanned the gymnasium, it was a bit packed. I never knew that many people were interested in basketball. There were many girls screaming, and apparently some even held up a banner of me. I felt quite bashful after seeing that. There were also boys who were giving me unpleasant looks. Nevermind them, I scanned again and spotted Venus together with our friends. My eyebrows pinched together when I saw the smirk on Mars's face. I had told him what happened between Venus and I at the sleepover and even the dating part. He was honestly happy for me, but of course he won't after he finds out the truth. Venus didn't lie when she said she wanted to keep the boys out. The whole school knows that we are dating currently. Hopefully, I'll get her to fall in love with me. I fixed my bun and put on my headband to keep my hair at bay.
"Woah, you've got some crazy fans there, Minerva," The captain and president of the club, Candice said as she patted my back.
"They're here," Dany, the vice captain said, pointing at five to seven players who were about six feet tall with rather fair skin tones.
Talk about tall, unlike the opposing team, our only tallest member is five foot eleven. Well, besides all that I hope it'll be fun.
We greeted each other, and then there I locked eyes with a fair girl who's about six foot three with short blue hair and blue eyes. In an instant, my mind sensed something.
Poseidon.
I blinked my eyes rapidly. There's no way poseidon would be reincarnated as a girl. That's not what is thought. It made me think how the school might have been hiding something from us, but then again, it's the society members who usually visit us and teach us about it. The thing is, they hide their appearance very well â using make-up maybe? When I was young I did try to search for the profile of the temporary teacher who was hired to teach about the reincarnated children, yet when I searched for his name, it's as if he didn't exist. Then I remembered, we were told not to have discussions about it again. No wonder that my family and my classmates, even the whole world doesn't speak about it. I probably should talk to Venus and Mars about this.
The whistle blew and my team got the ball first. I lay low for a while so as not to drive the attention of the opposing team to me. The captain and the others would handle it. For the first half of the game. I never got to touch the ball. I felt drops of sweat dripping down my face a little because of the heat. The game was tied. I knew this team was amazing.
"Hey, Minerva. I need you to lead the second half okay?" The captain said.
I nodded. I was born for this after all. My eyes wandered towards the blue-haired girl. My eyes widened. She was dry as dust. I blinked my eyes repeatedly, wondering if I was dreaming or not.
Suddenly, I left a nudge. I looked to the side and saw the other member grinning widely at me.
"You can ask her out later, but we need to crush them first alright?" Candice told me.
My eyebrows shoot up. It's as if my mind was mind blown. Did they not know that I'm already taken â my heart is.
"I'm dating someone already though." I answered honestly.
"What??" My teammates shouted all at once that made everyone stare at us.
I wanted to facepalm so bad.
The buzzer buzzed calling us back to the court.
I held my chin up and went into my position. The other team looked confident that they would win. I took a deep breath getting ready to play. My eyes caught the blue-haired girl looking at me with a worried look. She must have sensed me if she's really a reincarnated child.
When we heard the whistle blow, the ball was once ours again thanks to Pat's magnificent jump. She passed it to me. I didn't even think twice and went in for a three pointer right away.
The game ended with us being twenty points in the lead. Candice and the other nudged me at my shoulder, telling me we did a good job. The opposing team took the defeat well. It was just a practice play after all.
"Hi, I'm Sam. Sam Cornwell," some girl said.
I turned my back around to face her, and it's the blue-haired girl. I tried to contain my facial expression and tried not to be shocked. There's still no sign of sweat around her body.
"Minerva Henceforth," I answered with a smile.
"And I'm Venus Bridget, her girlfriend," Venus said from behind me followed by our friends.
My eyebrows were pinched out of curiosity. Did she also manage to detect that. Sam's Poseidon's reincarnation? It must be. I glanced at Mars raising my eyebrow. He shot me a nod.
He must have also sensed it. We need to have a conversation later â the three of us.
"Minerva and Venus huh? I'll take note of that. I better go. We have a flight to catch later in the evening. Bye," She said as she waved goodbye and went to her team.
"Aren't you such a catch. She was totally checking you out," Pat said.
I rolled my eyes and went to change my clothes.
Violet, Maxy, and Travis went home after congratulating me. Venus, Mars, and I were the only ones left in our group of friends to stay after school.
I stayed at a gazebo near the field.
"Why are we staying again?" Mars asked with both of his hands behind his back.
"It's about Sam," I said.
"What about her?" Venus said in a rather irritated voice while looking away as if she wasn't interested in what I'm saying.
I sighed and crossed my legs then leaned forward towards them.
"I think she's Poseidon's reincarnation," I said in a quiet voice.
Venus and Mars eyes widen in shock. Mars started to run his fingers through his short hair and give a little laugh.
I squinted at him. Had they not sensed something from the girl?
"Wait. So that's why you keep staring at her," Mars chuckled as he winked at Venus.
I was dearly confused. Maybe they had known already, but am I missing something?
"Wait so you guys already know, so what's with the dramatic expression?" I asked.
I was startled at their sudden expressions. Heck, the way Mars suddenly ran his fingers through his hair makes me think it was serious since he only does this gesture whenever he's serious.
Venus and Mars looked at each other, then Venus's face started to redden. I felt my stomach twist and turn. What are they hiding from me? Could Venus have told Mars that she wasn't really interested in me?
Venus was probably interested in Sam. She did introduce herself to her. Why would she do that if she doesn't? Besides, Poseidon did become Aphrodite's lover, so did Ares but Athena didn't. My heart twinged. The fact the Aphrodite had many lovers must have made Athena sad, but last time I saw her, she was smiling happily. I shook my unpleasant thought away. Venus is different from Aphrodite even if they have the same soul. Their personalities might have overlapped in some cases but not all â like mine and Mars. Besides, Vulcan is another proof. He's stunning.
"Are you interested in Sam?" I blurted out.
"Are you crazy? Isn't Venus in love with you?" Mars said, putting his hands on his hips.
My eyes lit up but my head suddenly ached. My hands grabbed Mars's collar as if my body had its own. Mars in turn looked at me with eyes filled with anger as if I was looking at someone else. Luckily, we snapped out of it after a couple of minutes.
"Shit! What was that?" I looked at Mars.
Mars looked at me with apologizing eyes and fixed his hair.
"I'm sorry. It's as if my body moved on it's own," Mars explained.
My thoughts were scattered all over the place. That was freaking weird.
"Anyway. I mean you two are dating, right?" Mars added, pretending that nothing had happened.
I guess it's for the best. We could talk about it when something similar happens again.
I felt my heart stabbed. He really just has to blurt out the truth huh?
I just nodded and decided to proceed with the original topic, but before we did, someone joined our table.
Handsome face and slick hair. Vulcan sat beside Mars.
"You should include me too when it's about reincarnation children," Vulcan said in an indifferent voice.
It had been a few weeks since we had bumped into him. I wonder if he's recovering from the news that Venus and I are dating. I looked through his eyes. They were full of sadness. I bit my cheek. The news must have been hard to take in. I felt pangs of guilt hit me right in the heart.
