Side Story 1 â Chapter 18

âOh, about what happened today during the dayâ¦â
âIâm fine!â
Evan immediately interrupted her, waving his hands frantically.
âI-Iâm really fine, Miss.â
âThereâs no way youâre fine. You hadâ¦that expression on your face.â
ââ¦â
âIâm sorry.â
Loretta gently released his hand and fidgeted with the blankets spread around them.
Evan lowered his head, offering no response.
âYou seeâ¦itâs like this.â
When the silence stretched on, Loretta spoke again, hesitant.
âThe reason I was with His Majesty today is because heâ¦uh, Evan?â
Just as she was about to explain.
Evan, who had been sitting quietly next to her, quickly pulled her in and held her in his arms.
âIâm sorry, Miss. I just canâtâ¦â
He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his breath ragged.
ââ¦I canât bear to hear it.â
âItâs really not something you need to misunderstand. Nothing happened, really.â
âI know. Youâre an honorable lady. But Iâ¦â
He shook his head as if in self-reproach.
âWhy do I have such wicked thoughts every time I see you with another man?â
âWickedâ¦thoughts?â
Despite Lorettaâs question, he didnât explain what those thoughts were.
Instead, he simply held her tighter.
ââ¦Evan.â
Loretta quietly tilted her head up to look at him.
âYour mana is leaking.â
ââ¦Iâm sorry.â
âThat means youâre holding something back again.â
âW-well, not necessarily.â
âBut it seems you have something you want to tell me. If you donât, Iâll be so worried that I wonât be able to sleep for days.â
âYouâre exaggerating, Miss.â
âExaggerating? You know how much I like you, donât you?â
âHaâ¦â
He turned his head slightly, probably embarrassed that their faces were so close. But he didnât release her from his embrace.
âI like you more, Miss.â
âOkay. So what kind of wicked thoughts are you having?â
âThatâsâ¦â
He hesitated, then finally whispered, his gaze fixed on Lorettaâs blue eyes.
âI want to monopolize you.â
ââ¦â
âI wish no one else knew about you.â
He moved his hand to grasp Lorettaâs, which was holding a blanket. He gently caressed the inside of her wrist with his long fingers.
âThis softnessâ¦I wish I was the only one who knew about it.â
The chill that had lingered on Lorettaâs fingertips was replaced by Evanâs warmth.
âThe one who brings warmth to you.â
ââ¦â
âIt would be nice if I was the only one who knew this scentâ¦Thatâs what I think.â
He bit his lip, a pained expression on his face.
âIâm sorry. Itâs a bitâ¦terrible, isnât it?â
âNot at all.â
âYou donât have to comfort me.â
âItâs not comfort. If thatâs terrible, then Iâm also a terrible person.â
âWhat? What?â
Loretta snuggled closer to him, leaning her head fully against his shoulder, and smiled mischievously.
âDo you know how upset I was when you cut your hair before going to the Imperial Palace when we were kids?â
âUh, why?â
âI was a bit angry because I thought everyone would see your handsome face and pretty eyes.â
âI-Iâm notâ¦handsome. Well, anyway, we were just kids then.â
âBut I still think it would be nice if Evan only liked me.â
âThatâs completely natural.â
âIt would make me so upset if you danced intimately with another lady.â
âI will never do anything to upset you again.â
âMore than anything, I want you to always think of me.â
Then, Loretta shook her head slightly and rephrased her words honestly.
âMake yourself think only of me, Evan.â
âIâ¦already am.â
He answered, bowing his head. His lips brushed against her hair.
âSo please donât call my possessiveness terrible.â
ââ¦â
âBecause Iâm all yours anyway, Evan.â
Perhaps because their bodies were so close, Loretta could easily feel him flinch, and she giggled.
âWhat should I do if you react like that?â@@novelbin@@
âYou canât say things like that here!â
âHere?â
When Loretta looked up at him questioningly, he quickly moved his face away, embarrassed.
âWeâre alone, Miss. Itâs d-dangerous. Especially because Iâmâ¦trying so hard to control myself right now.â
âBut even if itâs dangerousâ¦â
Loretta recalled the list of Evanâs fantasies he had confessed earlier.
Holding hands all day.
Touching her hair and smelling her scent.
Touching her face.
ââ¦Wouldnât it be alright to do that much? Weâre adults.â
She felt Evan stiffen.
Loretta realized once again that he was truly pure-hearted.
There was no need for him to be so flustered and nervous about just touching her face.
âYouâre not going to do it?â
âD-donât tease me, Miss. How could I possiblyâ¦!â
âBut if itâs not you, Evan, I canât do it with anyone else.â
âNeither can Iâ¦if itâs not you, Miss. Butâ¦not now! Not in such aâ¦shabby placeâ¦â
âBut you said you cherished this room so much that you didnât want to move, even though itâs small.â
Loretta tilted her head up, closing her eyes slightly, as if to say, âGo ahead, you can touch my face now.â
âHnghâ¦â
Evanâs flustered groan made her struggle to contain her laughter.
âMiss.â
He whispered softly, then gently caressed her cheek with his hand.
âYouâreâ¦so beautiful. Truly.â
Evan let out a small sigh of admiration and cupped her face with his entire palm.
Lorettaâs head naturally tilted up towards him.
Suddenly, she felt a soft touch against her lips. A light peck.
ââ¦!â
When Lorettaâs eyes flew open in surprise, Evan blushed.
âIâm sorry! I-I thought it was okayâ¦since you saidâ¦â
âOf, of course itâs okay! Thatâs right!â
Loretta was equally flustered, and she stammered, repeating the same words over and over.
âItâs justâ¦I didnât know you wanted to kiss me, Evan.â
âI always wanted to! I likeâ¦everything about you, soâ¦â
ââ¦â
âAh, I-I didnât mean to imply I have any ulterior motives, Miss! I meanâ¦!â
As Evan panicked, Loretta gently wrapped her arms around his neck, lifted her chin, and met his lips.
âActually, I wanted to kiss you too.â
She smiled, slowly parting her lips. Evanâs frozen expression was somehow adorable.
âIâm s-sorryâ¦Miss.â
He apologized in a slightly hoarse voice, and Loretta tilted her head.
âFor what?â
âIâ¦lied.â
ââ¦Lied?â
The moment she finished her question, she felt his arms tighten around her waist, pulling her even closer.
Their bodies pressed together, leaving no space between them.
He tilted his head and kissed her again. This time, it was different â urgent and desperate, pouring out all the desire he had held back.
When their lips finally parted, he whispered, his breath hot against her skin.
âIâve beenâ¦harboring them.â
As if he couldnât bear even a momentâs separation, he brushed his lips against hers again, finishing his confession.
ââ¦Sinister thoughts.â
Loretta couldnât respond. She simply gasped for breath, which she had forgotten during their kiss.
âSoâ¦please forgive me, Miss.â
He kissed her again.
He seemed to have regained some composure, and this time, their breaths mingled slowly, each kiss lingering.
By now, the clouds had cleared, revealing the moon and stars everyone had been waiting for.
Those who had been hoping for a meteor shower under the dim sky were rewarded for their patience, making wishes upon the swiftly falling starlight.
However, the young lovers who awaited the stars high in the Magic Tower, closer to the heavens than anyone else, saw none of this beautiful sight.
ââ¦I never intended to show you the meteor shower from the beginning, Miss.â
Evan confessed as he kissed her through her hair, and Loretta smiled.
âItâs alright, I donât have any wishes anymore.â
She turned her head and lightly brushed her lips against his cheek.
âTheyâveâ¦already come true.â
His lips touched her ear. Evan whispered something, and Loretta nodded, murmuring, âYes, mine too.â
And inevitably, they kissed again.
