Chapter 17: The Princess Bride
Hollywood Remake (A Celebrity Love Story)
Kate leaned back against Aidanâs chest and smiled contentedly, feeling him tighten his arms around her with a gentle squeeze. Today was supposed to be his first day of band rehearsal in preparation for the upcoming tour, but Kate had convinced him to take one more day off to recuperate from his injury.
Sheâd expected him to protest, but he hadnât put up much of a fight. Heâd been content enough to spend the day cuddling with her on the couch, watching movies on hotel pay-per-view. Heâd wanted some Will Ferrell comedy, but heâd given in gracefully when she found one of her all-time favorites on the menu: The Princess Bride.
âI havenât seen this in years,â she said now with a sigh. âI forgot how much I love this movie.â
âI remember,â he replied.
âDo you?â She turned her neck to look at his face for a moment.
âPlease,â he said with a chuckle. âYou used to force me to watch this with you every single time I was sick.â
âI did not force you!â she protested. âYou like this movie too!â
He smiled at her and shrugged.
âReally?â She furrowed her forehead at him. âDo you not want to watch this?â
âNo, no,â he said, taking his eyes away from the screen for a moment to look down at her. âI like watching you watch it.â
She turned back toward the TV. âWhat does that mean?â she asked.
âYou have a thing for the stable boy,â he said. âI know how he gets you all hot and bothered.â
She giggled. âHe is yummy."
She could sense him rolling his eyes behind her. âHeâs OK.â
âDonât be jealous, Aidan.â
He pressed his lips to the top of her head for a moment. âWhat is it about him anyway?â he mused. âIs it the mustache?â
She felt him lift his arm and idly trace his finger above his own upper lip.
âOh no,â she said, turning back around and pulling his hand away from his face. Â âYou are not growing a mustache. Donât you dare!â
âI look good with a mustache!â
âYou look terrible with a mustache.â
âYouâre just culturally ignorant,â he said, narrowing his eyes at her. âEveryone knows itâs a nod to Freddie Mercury.â
She narrowed her own eyes and glared back at him before twisting to face the screen again. âMore like a nod to Super Mario Brothers."
She crossed her arms in front of her chest in feigned indignation, but she felt his shoulders shaking with silent laughter behind her, and she couldn't prevent the corners of her mouth from curving upward.
âOh look,â he said after a moment. âHere comes your favorite part.â
She glanced up at him again, before turning back to watch the scene where Buttercup sends her true love tumbling head over heels down the side of a steep hill.
âSeriously?â she said, after the loversâ kiss was rudely interrupted by a cut-away to the annoying grandson. âAidan, how do you remember my favorite scene?â
âI know what you like,â he muttered. âBeat a guy up âtil heâs reduced to nothing but a bloody pulp, and he still comes back for more. Thatâs your idea of romance.â
She turned around again and put one hand on his cheek, cupping his face. âAwww,â she said in a little girlâs voice. âDid somebody get a boo-boo?â
He stuck out his lower lip and nodded at her pathetically. âYes, I did.â
âHere, let me kiss it and make it betterââ

ââWait a minute! Wait a minute!â
Aidanâs granddaughter squirmed on his lap, where she had settled in to listen to the story he and Kate were taking turns telling. âI thought this was the story of when you got grandma to marry you,â she said.
âIt is!â he replied.
âWell, when do you get to the good part?â she asked. âItâs been like an hour now, and weâre still on the first day!â
âSecond day,â Kate corrected.
âAnd you keep stopping to talk to each other about stupid movies I never heard of,â her granddaughter complained.
âYou never heard of The Princess Bride?â Kate asked, looking at her in astonishment. âYou would love that movie!â
âYeah, yeah.â Aidan rolled his eyes. âWe all know your grandma had the hots for that guy. What was that actor?â
âCary Ewles,â Kate sighed.
âHmmm.â Aidan scowled at her. âDid you ever go to bed with Cary Ewles, Grandma?â
âDonât be a wise-ass, Grandpa."
The little girl on Aidanâs lap kicked her legs impatiently. âTell the story!â
âOK, OK,â Aidan said, pausing for a moment to think. âWell, I think it was a few days later before the next time I proposed.â
Kate buried her face in her hands. âWas that the time you threw the ring at me?â
âNo,â Aidan chuckled back at her. âWe arenât there yet.â
Kate looked up at him, confused.
âYou donât remember?â he asked. âThe time I gave you my credit card and sent you shopping on Rodeo Drive?â
