Chapter 106
Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian (Fifty Shades 4)
âGood morning, Gail.â Stretching, I look out the windows at the remnants of a vivid dawn.
âYou have some laundry there?â she asks.
âYes. These are Anastasiaâs.â
âDo you want me to wash and press them?â
âDo you have time?â
âIâll put them on the quick cycle.â
âExcellent, thank you.â I pass her Anaâs clothes. âHow was your sister?â
âVery well, thanks. The kids are growing. Boys can be rough.â
âI know.â
She smiles and offers to make me some coffee.
âPlease. Iâll be in my study.â As she watches me her smile changes from pleasant to knowingâ¦in the way thatâs feminine and secretive. Then she hurries out of the kitchen, I assume to the laundry room.
Whatâs her problem?
Okay, this is the first Mondayâthe first timeâin the four years sheâs worked for me that thereâs been a woman asleep in my bed. But itâs not that big a deal. Breakfast for two, Mrs. Jones. I think you can manage that.
I shake my head and wander into my study to start work. Iâll shower laterâ¦maybe with Ana.
I check my e-mails and send one to Andrea and Ros, saying Iâll be in this afternoon, not this morning. Then I take a look at Barneyâs latest schematics.
GAIL KNOCKS AND BRINGS me a second cup of coffee, letting me know itâs already 8:15.
That late?
âIâm not going into the office this morning.â
âTaylor was asking.â
âIâll go this afternoon.â
âIâll tell him. Iâve hung Miss Steeleâs clothes in your closet.â
âThank you. That was quick. She still asleep?â
âI think so.â And thereâs that little smile again. I arch my brows and her smile broadens as she turns to leave my study. I put my work aside and head off with my coffee to take a shower and have a shave.
ANA IS STILL OUT for the count when I finish dressing.
Youâve exhausted her, Grey. And it was pleasurable, more than pleasurable. She looks serene, as if she doesnât have a care in the world.
Good.
From the chest I take my watch, and on an impulse open the top drawer and pocket my last condom.
You never know.
I amble back through the living room toward my study.
âDo you want your breakfast yet, sir?â
âIâll have breakfast with Ana. Thanks.â
I pick up the phone and call Andrea from my desk. After weâve exchanged a few words she puts me through to Ros.
âSo when can we expect you?â Rosâs tone is sarcastic.
âGood morning, Ros. How are you?â I say sweetly.
âPissed.â
âAt me?â
âYes, at you, and your hands-off work ethic.â
âIâll be in later. The reason Iâm calling is Iâve decided to liquidate Woodsâs company.â Iâve told her this already, but she and Marco are taking too long. I want this done, now. I remind her that this was going to happen if the companyâs P&L didnât improve. And it hasnât.
âHe needs more time.â
âIâm not interested, Ros. Weâre not carrying deadweight.â
âAre you sure?â
âI donât want any more lame excuses.â Enough, already. Iâve made up my mind.
âChristianââ
âHave Marco call me, itâs shit-or-bust time.â
âOkay. Okay. If thatâs what you really want. Anything else?â
âYes. Tell Barney that the prototype looks good, though Iâm not sure about the interface.â
âI thought the interface worked well, once I figured it out. Not that Iâm an expert.â
âNo, itâs just missing something.â
âTalk to Barney.â
âI want to meet him this afternoon to discuss.â
âFace-to-face?â
Her sarcasm is irritating. But I ignore her tone and tell her that I want his whole team there to brainstorm.
âHeâll be pleased. So Iâll see you this afternoon?â She sounds hopeful.
âOkay,â I reassure her. âTransfer me back to Andrea.â
While I wait for her to pick up the phone I gaze out at the cloudless sky. Itâs the same shade as Anaâs eyes.
Sappy, Grey.
âAndreaââ
A movement distracts me. Looking up, Iâm pleased to see Ana standing in the doorway, dressed in nothing but my T-shirt. Her legs, long and shapely, are on display for my eyes only. She has great legs.
âMr. Grey,â Andrea answers.
My eyes lock with Anaâs. They are the color of a summer sky and just as warm. Good Lord, I could bask in her warmth all dayâevery day.
Donât be absurd, Grey.
âClear my schedule this morning, but get Bill to call me. Iâll be in at two. I need to talk to Marco this afternoon, that will need at least half an hour.â
A soft smile tugs at Anaâs lips and I find myself mirroring her.
âYes, sir,â Andrea says.
âSchedule Barney and his team in after Marco or maybe tomorrow, and find time for me to see Claude every day this week.â
âSam wants to talk to you, this morning.â
âTell him to wait.â
âItâs about Darfur.â
âOh?â
âApparently he sees the aid convoy as a great personal PR opportunity.â
Oh, God. He would, wouldnât he?
âNo, I donât want publicity for Darfur.â My voice is gruff with exasperation.
