Chapter 69
Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian (Fifty Shades 4)
âI hope so.â
Ana is deep in a passionate discussion with Kavanagh. What are those two women talking about?
âYou still get out much to fish?â I refocus on Mr. Steele.
âSure do. Annieâs friend José, his father, and I sneak out as often as we can.â
The fucking photographer! Again?
âHeâs the guy that looks after the Beetle?â
âYeah, thatâs him.â
âGreat car, the Beetle. Iâm a fan of German-made cars.â
âYeah? Annie loves that old car, but I guess itâs getting past its sell-by date.â
âFunny you should mention that. I was thinking of loaning her one of my company cars. Do you think sheâd go for it?â
âI guess. That would be up to Annie, mind.â
âGreat. I take it Anaâs not into fishing.â
âNo. That girl takes after her mother. She couldnât stomach seeing the fish suffer. Or the worms, for that matter. Sheâs a gentle soul.â He gives me a pointed look. Oh. A warning from Raymond Steele. I turn it into a joke.
âNo wonder she wasnât keen on the cod we ate the other day.â
Steele chuckles. âSheâs fine with eating them.â
Ana has finished talking to the Kavanaghs and is heading our way. âHi,â she says, beaming at us.
âAnnie, where are the restrooms?â Steele asks.
She directs him to go outside the pavilion and to the left.
âSee you in a moment. You kids enjoy yourselves,â he says.
She watches him go, then peers nervously up at me. But before she or I can say anything weâre interrupted by a photographer. She snaps a quick still of us together before hurrying away.
âSo youâve charmed my father as well?â Ana says, her voice sweet and teasing.
âAs well?â Have I charmed you, Miss Steele?
With my fingers I trace the rosy flush that appears on her cheek. âOh, I wish I knew what you were thinking, Anastasia.â When my fingers reach her chin I tilt her head back so I can scrutinize her expression. She stills and stares back at me, her pupils darkening.
âRight now,â she whispers, âIâm thinking, nice tie.â
I was expecting some kind of declaration; her response makes me laugh. âItâs recently become my favorite.â
She smiles.
âYou look lovely, Anastasia. This halter-neck dress suits you, and I get to stroke your back, feel your beautiful skin.â
Her lips part and her breath hitches, and I can feel the pull of the attraction between us.
âYou know itâs going to be good, donât you, baby?â My voice is low, betraying my longing.
She closes her eyes, swallows, and takes a deep breath. When she opens them again, sheâs radiating anxiety. âBut I want more,â she says.
âMore?â
Fuck. What is this?
She nods.
âMore?â I whisper again. Her lip is pliant beneath my thumb. âYou want hearts and flowers.â Fuck. It will never work with her. How can it? I donât do romance. My hopes and dreams begin to crumble between us.
Her eyes are wide, innocent, and beseeching.
Damn. Sheâs so beguiling. âAnastasia. Itâs not something I know.â
âMe, neither.â
Of course; sheâs never had a relationship before. âYou donât know much.â
âYou know all the wrong things,â she breathes.
âWrong? Not to me. Try it,â I plead.
Please. Try it my way.
Her gaze is intense as she searches my face, looking for clues. And for a moment Iâm lost in blue eyes that see everything.
âOkay,â she whispers.
âWhat?â Every hair on my body stands to attention.
âOkay. Iâll try.â
âYouâre agreeing?â I donât believe it.
âSubject to the soft limits, yes. Iâll try.â
Sweet. Lord. I pull her into my arms and wrap her in my embrace, burying my face in her hair, inhaling her seductive scent. And I donât care that weâre in a crowded space. Itâs just her and me. âJesus, Ana, youâre so unexpected. You take my breath away.â
A moment later Iâm aware that Raymond Steele has returned and is examining his watch to cover his embarrassment. Reluctantly, I release her. Iâm on top of the world.
Deal done, Grey!
âAnnie, should we get some lunch?â Steele asks.
âOkay,â she says with a shy smile directed at me.
âWould you like to join us, Christian?â For a moment Iâm tempted, but Anaâs anxious glance in my direction says, Please, no. She wants alone time with her dad. I get it.
âThank you, Mr. Steele, but I have plans. Itâs been great to meet you, sir.â
Try and control your stupid grin, Grey.
âLikewise,â Steele repliesâsincerely, I think. âLook after my baby girl.â
âOh, I fully intend to,â I respond, shaking his hand.
In ways that you canât possibly imagine, Mr. Steele.
I take Anaâs hand and bring her knuckles to my lips. âLater, Miss Steele,â I murmur. Youâve made me a happy, happy man.
Steele gives me a brief nod, and taking his daughterâs elbow, leads her out of the reception. I stand dazed but brimming with hope.
Sheâs agreed.
âChristian Grey?â My joy is interrupted by Eamon Kavanagh, Katherineâs father.
âEamon, how are you?â We shake hands.
TAYLOR COLLECTS ME AT 3:30. âGood afternoon, sir,â he says, opening my car door.
