Chapter 97
Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian (Fifty Shades 4)
TAYLOR PULLS UP OUTSIDE my parentsâ front door. âAre you ready for this?â I ask. Ana nods and I squeeze her hand. âFirst for me, too,â I whisper. When Taylorâs out the door I give her a wicked, salacious grin. âBet you wish you were wearing your underwear right now.â
Her breath hitches and she scowls, but I climb out of the car to greet my mother and father, who are waiting on the doorstep. Ana looks cool and calm as she walks around the car to us. âAnastasia, youâve met my mother, Grace. This is my dad, Carrick.â
âMr. Grey, what a pleasure to meet you.â She smiles and shakes his outstretched hand.
âThe pleasure is all mine, Anastasia.â
âPlease, call me Ana.â
âAna, how lovely to see you again.â Grace hugs her. âCome in, my dear.â Taking Anaâs arm, she leads her inside and I follow in her pantyless wake.
âIs she here?â Mia screams from somewhere inside the house. Ana gives me a startled look.
âThat would be Mia, my little sister.â
We both turn in the direction of the high heels clattering through the hall. And there she is. âAnastasia! Iâve heard so much about you!â Mia wraps her in a big hug. Though sheâs taller than Ana, I remember theyâre almost the same age.
Mia takes her hand and drags her into the vestibule as my parents and I follow. âHeâs never brought a girl home before,â Mia tells Ana in a shrill voice.
âMia, calm down,â Grace chides.
Yes, for fuckâs sake, Mia. Stop making such a scene.
Ana catches me rolling my eyes and shoots me a withering look.
Grace greets me with a kiss on both cheeks. âHello, darling.â Sheâs glowing, happy to have all her children home. Carrick offers his hand. âHello, son. Long time no see.â We shake hands and follow the women into the living room. âDad, you saw me yesterday,â I mutter. âDad jokesââmy father excels at them.
Kavanagh and Elliot are cuddling on one of the sofas. But Kavanagh gets up to hug Ana when we enter.
âChristian.â She gives me a polite nod.
âKate.â
And now Elliot has his big paws all over Ana.
Fuck, who knew my family was so touchy-feely all of a sudden? Put her down. I glare at Elliot and he grinsâan Iâm-just-showing-you-how-itâs-done expression plastered all over his face. I slip my arm around Anaâs waist and pull her to my side. All eyes are on us.
Hell. This feels like a freak show.
âDrinks?â Dad offers. âProsecco?â
âPlease,â Ana and I reply together.
Mia bounces on the spot and claps her hands. âYouâre even saying the same things. Iâll get them.â She dashes out of the room.
What the hell is wrong with my family?
Ana frowns. Sheâs probably finding them weird, too.
âDinnerâs almost ready,â Grace says as she follows Mia out of the room.
âSit,â I tell Ana, and I lead her over to one of the sofas. She does as sheâs told and I sit at her side, careful not to touch her. I need to set an example for my overly demonstrative family.
Maybe theyâve always been this way?
My father diverts me. âWe were just talking about vacations, Ana. Elliot has decided to follow Kate and her family to Barbados for a week.â
Dude! I stare at Elliot. What the hell happened to Mr. Love âEm and Leave âEm? Kavanagh must be good in the sack. She certainly looks smug enough.
âAre you taking a break now that youâve finished your degree?â Carrick asks Ana.
âIâm thinking about going to Georgia for a few days,â she answers.
âGeorgia?â I exclaim, unable to hide my surprise.
âMy mother lives there,â she says, her voice wavering, âand I havenât seen her for a while.â
âWhen were you thinking of going?â I snap.
âTomorrow, late evening.â
Tomorrow! What the fuck? And Iâm only learning of this now?
Mia returns with pink prosecco for Ana and me.
âYour good health!â Dad raises his glass.
âFor how long?â I persist, trying to keep my voice level.
âI donât know yet. It will depend how my interviews go tomorrow.â
Interviews? Tomorrow?
âAna deserves a break,â Kavanagh interrupts, staring at me with ill-concealed antagonism. I want to tell her to mind her own fucking business, but for Anaâs sake I hold my tongue.
âYou have interviews?â Dad asks Ana.
âYes, for internships at two publishers, tomorrow.â
When was she going to tell me this? Iâm here with her for two minutes and Iâm finding out details of her life that I should know!
âI wish you the best of luck,â Carrick says to her with a kind smile.
âDinner is ready,â Grace calls from across the hall.
I let the others exit the room but grab Anaâs elbow before she can follow.
âWhen were you going to tell me you were leaving?â My temper is rapidly unraveling.
âIâm not leaving. Iâm going to see my mother. And I was only thinking about it.â Ana dismisses me, as if Iâm a child.
âWhat about our arrangement?â
âWe donât have an arrangement yet.â
Butâ¦.
I lead us through the living room door and into the hallway. âThis conversation is not over,â I warn as we enter the dining room.
Mom has gone all outâbest china, best crystalâfor Anaâs and Kavanaghâs benefit. I hold out a chair for Ana; she sits down and I take a seat beside her. Mia beams at both of us from across the table. âWhere did you meet Ana?â Mia asks.
