Chapter 30

Ends & Beginnings

Alpha's Scent

Jon

Is it true, alpha?

Jon

About Zion?

Kyril

Yes.

Kyril

He and Serena are leaving.

Jon

On your orders?

Kyril

No.

Kyril

I wanted to let him heal as long as he’d like.

Kyril

But he insisted he should go.

Kyril

After what he did to you and Chris and the others.

Jon

Is this the same Zion we’re talking about?

Kyril

I know, it’s hard to believe.

Jon

I want to say goodbye.

Kyril

You don’t owe him anything, you know.

Kyril

He did almost kill you.

Jon

Yeah. And he almost killed your mate, Kyril.

Jon

We don’t owe him.

Jon

But we still care for some reason, don’t we?

Kyril

I guess.

KYRIL

Jon was right on the money, of course. Kyril’s feelings for Zion, the demon he once thought of as his brother, were confusing and contradictory, to say the least.

Time had passed since Kyril and Lilac had finally consummated their mating bond, and they’d barely been able to keep their hands off each other ever since.

So often were they lost in the bedroom that Kyril often forgot he had alpha duties to attend to.

But on a day like today, when Zion and Serena were about to depart, he needed to be focused.

While he had forgiven his wolf with Lilac, the presence of his brother remained a shadow on his conscience.

To finally say goodbye was to close that chapter of his life for good. To truly be reborn as an alpha with no regrets and a beloved luna by his side.

“Lilac, are you ready?” he asked, entering their bedroom.

She was zipping up a dress. The sight of her bare flesh alone, her spine, made him tingle all over with carnal desire.

She sensed it, grinning.

“Not now, Kyril,” she said. “There’s too much important business to take care of.”

“Look at you,” he said. “A true luna now. Putting business before pleasure.”

She stepped over and kissed him. “C’mon, it’s time to finish this.”

Outside, Kyril found Zion and Serena readying to depart. Many of the pack leadership were there to say goodbye.

While few had forgiven Zion for his acts, many still harbored good memories of the witch and were sad to see her go so suddenly.

Kyril nodded to his parents as they each hugged Zion then stepped away. He noticed that Rosalyn had tears in her eyes, and he didn’t blame her.

It was not easy to lose a son for the second time. Kyril left Lilac with Serena then approached his brother.

“So this is it?” he asked.

“Yeah, Kyril. It’s time.”

“You know, I’m not forcing you, Zion. I’m the alpha. It doesn’t matter what the others think. If I want my brother here, they have to respect that.”

“It’s not about them,” Zion said, and he sighed. “I can see that you’ve finally let go, and I’m happy for you. But, as long as I’m here, I can’t forgive myself, Kyril. For what I did to you, to Lilac, to Jon? And to so many others. All in the name of a revenge that was...meaningless.”

“If I had been in your shoes, Zion, if I believed someone had killed my Lilac, I would’ve done the same.”

“You really mean that?” he asked, surprised.

Kyril nodded, his eyes tearing up. “To me, Zion, all is forgiven. You’re my brother. And I hope I will see you and Serena again.”

With that, Kyril embraced Zion. Years of anger and violence disappeared in a single instant.

Once again, the demon and the lycan were brothers.

Kyril noticed Jon, lingering nearby, holding Adhira’s hand.

The two mates had been off the map ever since their journey to the Corvan Coven. He didn’t blame them. Now that Jon was fully healed, they had a lot of “catching up” to do.

Now, it seemed that Jon wanted to have a final word with Zion as well.

Kyril wondered if they’d finally bury the hatchet as well. Not that it was any of his business.

“Looks like Jon wants a word, Zion,” Kyril said, patting his arm with finality. “I’ll leave you to it.”

Kyril turned to walk away, but Zion nodded. “Hey, Kyril,” he said, looking over at Serena, hugging Lilac. “It’s okay, you know. I will miss this place. But as long as I have my mate, as long as I have Serena, everything is right in the world.”

Kyril looked at Lilac and understood exactly what Zion meant.

“You’ve never been more right about anything, brother,” he said.

Because Lilac was Kyril’s whole world now.

Lilac

Lilac was afraid, at first, to touch Serena again after what had happened last time. But when Serena embraced her, there were no memories. Only the purest present devotion.

“Be good, Lilac,” Serena said. “Kyril is lucky to have you.”

She looked down once more at the bracelet Lilac wore. The same bracelet Serena had worn for years and the catalyst that brought her and her mate back together.

She squeezed Lilac’s hand once more, then joined him, getting into the car.

Kyril stood apart, watching as the carriage left the pack property, disappearing in a cloud of dust.

Lilac wanted to go to him, to comfort him, but at the same time, she understood. Some emotions were better processed alone.

“Lilac.” She heard a voice behind her.

It was Rhea, the siren. Chris stood by her side, bandaged but on the road to recovery.

“I want to apologize,” Rhea said. “For doubting the alpha and disrespecting you.”

Lilac thought of that tumultuous day when she’d pushed Rhea into the fountain. It felt like ten million years ago. She shook her head.

“Rhea, it’s nothing,” she said. “You were worried for Chris. I understand.”

Rhea sighed with relief and looked at him. “I’m so glad he’s okay.”

“Me too,” Lilac said.

She really was. As Rhea turned to consider Zion’s car disappearing, she let out a grateful sigh.

“I know he wasn’t all bad. But I am still glad Zion is gone. Now, we can all move on.”

“Yes,” Lilac admitted. “We can.”

She turned once more to consider her mate, still staring off into the distance, bidding farewell to one of the most important parts of his life.

She could almost hear his thoughts from here.

~Goodbye, my brother. Goodbye…~

Ales

Lilac!

Lilac

Ales?

Lilac

Is everything okay?

Ales

What are you doing right now?

Lilac

Journaling in my room. Why?

Ales

Go outside.

Lilac

???

Ales

Just do it!

It was dusk, and all the activity of the day had finally died down. So Lilac was surprised to hear from her brother.

She ran downstairs, opened the front door, and let out a cry of delight.

Standing on her doorstep were her father, her mother, and her brother.

“Lilac!” Ales exclaimed, running over to her and pulling her into a bear hug.

“I can’t believe this!” she exclaimed, so excited. “What are you all doing here?”

“Can’t a mother and father check in on their young every once in a while?” Legion asked with a small wink.

“Please, Legion,” Mila said. “You can’t leave out the fact that we were invited!”

“Invited?” Lilac asked, surprised. “By who?”

They all nodded, and Lilac turned to see Kyril standing in the doorway with a huge grin plastered on his face.

“Surprise!” he said. “I thought we could use a good one on a day like today.”

Lilac felt like her heart was going to burst; she was so happy.

Everywhere she turned were the people she loved most. And it was all thanks to the thoughtfulness of her mate.

If they weren’t all watching, she swore she would’ve jumped into his arms and kissed him.

“Well?” Ales asked, impatient. “Are you going to show us around or what?”

KYRIL

Kyril watched as Lilac showed her family around the pack headquarters and their home.

She hardly resembled the shy little girl he’d first met in that dungeon. She was so confident now, so assured in her role as the pack’s luna.

His heart swelled with pride and love.

Sure, she still had a ways to go before completely overcoming her anxiety, and he still struggled to fully love himself, but together, they’d never been stronger.

Kyril knew that there were still enemies out there.

Stavros Tadd’s last words had been an ominous reminder of that.

“You will be hearing from me again…”

Kyril didn’t want to predict what that monstrous vampire had meant.

With Serena’s magic, who knew just how powerful he really was. But that wasn’t what mattered now.

When the time came, Kyril knew he would have to face Stavros Tadd. For now, however, he wanted to savor this moment as long as he could.

He looked at Lilac embracing her family.

Her mother was beautiful. Her father, a powerful alpha. Her brother, bound for greatness. He knew his inner wolf had chosen his mate wisely.

He wondered what kind of family they might have if they wanted one.

The thought had never crossed his mind. Until now.

“Kyril!” he heard Lilac shout. “C’mon, I want to show them the garden.”

With a smile, Kyril followed her.

He would save that question for later.

Lilac

Kyril.

Lilac

I can’t thank you enough for inviting my family.

Kyril

Anything for you, my little flower.

Kyril

I wanted to let you say goodbye in private.

Lilac

I miss them already.

Lilac

But…

Kyril

Yes?

Lilac

I miss something else too.

Kyril

Get over here.

Kyril

Now.

Lilac

Lilac and Kyril slammed against the wall, kissing and moaning and rubbing against each other.

Lilac had sprinted to their bedroom as fast as her feet could take her. Now that everyone was gone, she could have Kyril all to herself.

And, boy, was she hungry for another taste of him.

She quickly ripped off his belt as he pulled off her shirt. They weren’t in any mood for foreplay.

They needed to be one.

He was hard and ready, about to enter her, and Lilac couldn’t wait to feel his full girth inside her, but then Kyril did something totally unlike him.

He hesitated.

“Lilac,” he said. “Can I ask you something?”

“Can’t it wait?” she asked, nipping his ear impatiently.

“Maybe, but…”

And now he smiled the most loving smile. The sight alone made Lilac’s heart melt.

“I was just wondering…”

And now, as Lilac read Kyril’s mind, her heart slammed against her chest, and her mouth dropped in disbelief.

“Lilac,” Kyril said, “how would you like to have pups?”
