Chloe’s breath hitched as she struggled to comprehend Joseph’s lack of trust in her. Meanwhile, a

barely noticeable smile crept across Xavia’s lips.

“Fine,” Chloe said with determination, “If you don’t believe me, I’ll prove it to you. Those men may have

avoided some surveillance cameras in the community, but they couldn’t have eluded all of them. Once

we review the footage, there will be undeniable evidence.”

Chloe turned on her heels and began to walk away, determined to search for any traces of the two men

outside. Despite her frail and delicate figure, her bare feet showed clear signs of redness and swelling.

Each step was a struggle, causing her to limp along with a pitiful appearance. Yet, her resolute

determination shone through, giving off an aura of unwavering strength.

Joseph’s brows furrowed deeply, his thin lips pressed together tightly.

Xavia abruptly reached out and grabbed his arm, her voice urgent and assertive. “Let’s start by

searching the neighborhood. If what Chloe said is true, I should’ve encountered those men on my way

here. But I didn’t see anyone. It’s highly likely that those two men are still in the area.”

Joseph maintained his silence, his eyes fixated on Chloe as she moved farther away. Uncertainty

clouded his handsome face, leaving his thoughts unspoken. Sensing his hesitation, Xavia cleared her

throat a few times, discreetly covering her mouth, and adjusted her clothing, inadvertently revealing the

white bandage wrapped around her arm.

In the end, Joseph agreed to Xavia’s suggestion.

However, despite their thorough search, Joseph and Xavia found no trace of the unfamiliar men or the

missing dogs. In that moment of disappointment, Joseph’s phone pinged, indicating a new message

from the company group chat. With a sigh, he retrieved his phone and noticed that someone had

accidentally tagged everyone in the chat.

shifted upward, and Joseph’s eyes landed on a photo posted by Sophia in the group chat. The image

showcased a small dog, accompanied by her query about bringing it to the office the next day as there

would not be anyone at home. The human resource manager swiftly responded, stating, [For a

temporary arrangement, you can seek approval from your department supervisor. However, long-term

accommodation for pets is definitely not allowed. 1

Sophia replied, [Oh? I have to ask the department supervisor? Never mind then. Chloe already told me

this morning that she doesn’t like dogs. I better not go against the tide.] She appended a pitiful emoji to

convey her emotions.

Curious, colleagues from the marketing department inquired, [Why did you call Chloe so early

in the morning?]

[Oh, I forgot my password, so I reached out to her and ended up having a conversation,] Sophia

responded.

[Ah, I see.]

In an instant, Joseph’s face turned icy. He wasted no time and dialed Sophia’s number.

Sophia was pleasantly surprised to receive his call. Joseph got straight to the point, demanding, “What

did Chloe discuss with you this morning?”

“Ah… Not much, just a conversation about pets. Chloe expressed her frustration about the challenges

of taking care of two dogs. She mentioned how she longed for an end to that life-”

Before Sophia could finish her sentence, Joseph abruptly ended the call.

Xavia’s face turned pale. “It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have asked Chloe to help take care of Oreo.”

“You took a stab for her. What’s the trouble with helping you take care of a dog? She’s just being overly

dramatic,” Joseph said angrily.

“But… Now both Oreo and Toto are missing, and we have no idea how they disappeared,” Xavia said,

her voice filled with worry and regret.

Joseph’s gaze turned cold, emitting a menacing aura. If Chloe was reluctant to take care of the dogs,

she could have said so directly. He could have hired a nanny or taken them to the family home. The

fact that she had schemed behind his back like this struck a chord of betrayal within him. What was the

difference between her actions and those of women who sought power and wealth by any means

necessary?

Chloe finished watching all the available surveillance footage from the nearby shopping malls and

supermarkets in the neighborhood but failed to find any trace of the two individuals. Something was

definitely amiss. Someone within the community must have intentionally aided them, allowing them to

leave using vehicles from within the neighborhood and evading surveillance so that they could vanish

without a trace.

However, strangers were not permitted to enter the neighborhood. Puzzled, Chloe’s thoughts turned to

Xavia.
