Chapter - 2 The Devil's Messenger
It began with a kiss ✓
"He is our boss, Liam Richardson."
"What? No..." Eva said shaking her head. "You are joking, right?"
But Amelia still looked serious.
"What happened to our boss, Arthur Richardson? Where is he? Did he sell-"
"You crazy, stupid girl! Didn't you hear me greeting him? And Mr. Arthur hasn't sold this company."
''Oh thank God! I thought my job was in danger."
"Mr Arthur has gone on a trip I guess and he has handed the business here to his son, Liam Richardson and he is the guy you kissed just now."
"What? Oh no! I kissed the son of our boss.!"
"Yes."
"But why is he wearing a green jacket? Couldn't he wear formals?" Eva's head was spinning now.
"Well, he is our boss for the next 12 months. And sadly, he can wear whatever he wants."
"But I never heard of Mr Arthur going on a trip and his son taking over."
"That's why I tell you to pay at least a little bit attention to the gossips too. We knew he'll come but we had no idea that he'll be here today."
"Oh no! Amelia is he going to fire me?"
"No idea but I can just tell you to not appear in his line of sight. Avoid him as much as you can and just hope for him to forget everything."
"Ok. I am sorry for not refusing to be a part of your office gossips but now can you please enlighten me about what kind of person this Liam Richardson is? So that I can at least prepare myself to face him when the time comes."
"Liam Richardson is the only son of our boss. He isn't really a playboy and so far he has kept his personal life far from media and controversies. Well, looking at him, 6 feet 4 inches tall, well built body, muscled and virile looks, his chiseled jaw and blue green eyes-"
" I hope you remember you are married, Amelia." Eva interrupted.
"Well, I was just saying that girls fall for him easily and he has wealth and power and looks and everything one can want. I really think he spends his nights-"
"Can we please talk about the serious part?"
"Ok. When it comes to work he is a workaholic. Till now he was working in London branch of the corporation. It's hard to meet his expectations. He easily fire people without a second thought and conscience, I must say. The only person who has worked for him for a pretty long time is his secretary, Alex. The guy standing beside him."
"I didn't notice him." She was so nervous at that time that the only thing she looked at was that green jacket and the guy wearing it. The rest had just faded into the background.
"I advise you not to go anywhere near him because even though he is a treat to the eyes but after the stunt you pulled just now-"
"Ok I understood. Please don't remind me of that embarrassing moment." said Eva.
"He is gonna fire me." Eva said sadly.
"Don't worry, he will not." Amelia assured her.
"Are you sure?" Eva asked with hope dripping from her eyes.
"Well, there's always a hope. Think positive. Just wait for today, if nothing happens, good. If he doesn't call you for this entire week then excellent because then you are in safe zone and you still have your job."
"Amelia?" Someone called for Amelia.
" I'll be back in a minute." With these last words Amelia was gone and now Eva was left with her self. All alone. Worrying about the consequences of the kiss she had just now given to a stranger... who now turned out to be her new boss.
"I think I better write my resignation letter. I will quit before he fires me. At least that way it will be less embarrassing. But I've got this job with so much difficulty and people here are so nice."
As long as they don't drag you in a truth and dare game and give you a really idiotic task. An inner voice interrupted.
"Eva!"
Eva looked in direction of sound and saw Bob coming towards her.
"Hey, are you alright?"
"I don't know." she was so scared at the moment that she was anything but fine.
"Hey, did you really had no idea that he is our boss's son?"
"How would I have known that? And if I had known his identity do you really think I still would have kissed him?"
Bob gave her an apologetic smile.
"If we had any idea that this was going to happen then we would just have told you to kiss someone in the group."
Eva, shocked, looked at him and Bob was smiling. And now she was sure about at least one thing.
' I will never play a truth and dare game in my life ever again. Even if my life depended on it.'
Unknowingly Eva started comparing the physical attributes of Bob to the man she had just kissed. Her boss Liam Richardson.
'Mr Liam Richardson is more handsome than any other guy in our group. His eyes are captivating and the stubble on his jaw- stop it Eva!'Â she stopped herself from thinking further about the man who she was sure was going to be her doom.
"Hey, Eva." Bob tried to get her attention.
"Ah! Yes? You need something?"
"Yeah. I needed some printouts but it's alright if you don't feel like doing it. I'll just-"
"Oh! it's alright I'll do it." She took the pendrive from him.
'Moreover I think this will be the last thing that I am doing here.'
The day passed in a haze but nothing happened. All day long she felt like she was standing at the end of a cliff and might fall down any moment.
Next day too was the same. She was running errands for everyone. She had typed her resignation letter but hadn't submitted it yet. Even though this work wasn't the job of her dreams but she liked it here. But since she had made a terrible mistake of kissing the boss everything now seemed grey.
A week later...
A week had passed and still nothing had happened. The earth was still rotating and revolving at its own pace and the world was at peace. Everything in office was usual and nothing out of the place had happened except that Eva had lately became more clumsy and always looked worried.
"Amelia had said that if nothing happened in a week, if CEO didn't call for me then it would mean that I still have my job." Standing near the coffee machine, Eva smiled to herself. "Seems like the boss isn't as bad as the rumours say."
Eva had never paid any attention to the office gossips but this past week her ears were on high alert especially if it was something related to the new CEO.
"I was worrying for no reason at all. That was just a small kiss. Well...it was not even a kiss it was just a small peck on the cheek. And CEO is a busy man. I think with all the work he has he doesn't even remember me." Eva took a sigh of relief and a smile appeared on her face.
She tore the resignation letter which she had been carrying around with her for a week and threw the pieces into a dustbin.
" I don't need you anymore." She said with a smile.
"Ms Evangeline Rose."
Eva heard her name and turned around only to find that the unfamiliar male voice belonged to the person who, in the office circle, was known as Liam Richardson's right hand... Alex, his secretary.
Looking at Alex all the happiness that she was feeling just mere seconds ago faded and the blood drained from her body. She could feel the chills down her spine and was now no longer sure if tearing the resignation letter was a good decision.
Last week when she was all worried and nervous, nothing had happened but today when she had finally let go of all her worries 'The devil's messenger' appeared out of nowhere.
'Was this some sort of a game? The one where you lulled your enemy into a false sense of security and just when they were starting to relax you kick them in teeth?' Eva wondered.
She tried to shake the worries off her mind and clearing her throat she finally asked... with a sweet smile... which she knew was looking forced and fake. She asked,"Yes Sir, how can I help you?"
"You have been called to CEO's office. Come, follow me."
'Holy cow!'
