Chapter 12 ~ Go to bed, Cole!

Kieran’s POV ~

I stepped into my room, and was walking to the boys’ bedroom door when I heard them ask “Mommy, tell us a story. Please!?” She giggled and said “Okay.. One story! Which one?” Together, they said “The one about the Moon’s Heart!” She giggled again and told them “I should have put money on it!”

She got them both settled and sat between their beds.. she began talking, in a voice as soothing and calm as I had ever heard. I settled myself on my own floor.. just inside the door of my room.

Long ago, there lived a great Alpha. This Alpha loved his mate, above all things! They struggled for many years to start a family of their own. Vanessa, the Alpha’s mate, finally found herself expecting a baby.. After many months of struggling through the pregnancy, she finally gave birth, to a beautiful baby boy! They named him Alec.. and he was their pride and joy!

They agreed to raise him to be as great a man as his father. Alec grew like a little weed. He was smart..and funny. He was respectful and kind. Loving and giving! One day, shortly after Alec’s first birthday… Vanessa found she was pregnant, once more.

In her first month, Vanessa realized something was very wrong. She felt ill, all the time.. she was in pain. The Alpha, Peter, took her to the doctor and they were told the new baby was not going to survive. Complications were keeping her from developing properly.

The parents were devastated. The doctor wanted Vanessa to end the pregnancy, but she refused! She was determined to do whatever it took to save her baby girl!

She visited witches.. she spoke to the pack’s elders. Consulted other she-wolves with similar conditions. And she prayed. Every night, she begged the Moon Goddess to save her child.

One particular night.. a night that had Vanessa in such pain all she could do was weep.. she prayed to the Goddess again. She prayed harder and louder than ever before..

When she had all but given up hope, a warm light infused her bedroom.. and a sweet voice told her “I have heard your prayers, Sweet Vanessa! I am going to grant your wish.. because this little girl has a special purpose.”

The Goddess laid her hands on Vanessa’s tummy and whispered “Rest easy, little one! You are safe.. you are healthy. You are my precious child, and I give you my heart!” Then she kissed Vanessa’s tummy and was gone!

The very next day, a beautiful baby girl was born.. on the exact same day as her older brother’s birthday! Her family kept the fact of the Goddess’s blessing a secret.. in fear of someone wanting to take their baby!

She grew to be a healer.. a good person whose sole purpose is to help others!

Now, my handsome boys, we remember not to repeat this story, right? It’s just a fairy tale!”

Both boys readily agreed to keep it a secret.. Darius asked “How does the Moon Goddess live? She gave her heart to the baby girl, right?” And Calista giggled “She only gave the baby a piece of her heart. The Goddess can’t do that very often.. but once in awhile.. on a blue moon, she gifts a piece to her chosen children.”

I sit.. as still as a post! My mate is the Heart of the Moon! MY mate! Is the HEART OF THE MOON! This is huge! I immediately link Axel and Cole to get up and meet me in my office!

I rush down to my office and slam my way in.. Cole is yawning and Axel is rubbing his eyes. Axel asks “What is it? Has something happened? What’s wrong?” I looked at him.. apparently, waking him late at night, addles his brain!

I laugh and say “I’m sorry, guys! I know it’s late. But I have information that needs to be researched! Quick, fast, and in a hurry! I know what and where the Heart of the Moon is!”

Both of them sit… gaping mouths.. and Cole sputters “What? Where? How did you find it? Where did you go? I thought you were going to bed?” I shrugged.. and told them “I did! I went to my room. When I went to check on the boys.. Calista was telling them what they believe to be a fairy tale. It isn’t a tale.. it was her life story! She IS the heart of the Moon!”

Axel asks “What?? What does that even mean? How is it possible? Did she tell you about it?” I shook my head “No! Did you not hear me? She told the boys a fairy tale! About the heart of the Moon!” Axel groans “Then, how do you know it’s supposed to be her? Help me out here! Damn! I need coffee!”

I laughed, telling him “The family in the fairy tale are named Peter, Vanessa.. and their son, Alec!! Do you think that’s a coincidence?” Cole looks at me, with his eyes bugging “You woke us up.. from a sound sleep, mind you! To tell us Callie made up a story to tell your sons and decided to use her family’s names? It probably IS just a coincidence!”

I growl out “Is it a coincidence that Dark Woods is getting attacked by rogues.. looking for the Heart of the Moon? That the rogue we captured had information regarding that? Here’s a thought.. how about you start researching this first thing in the morning!? Calista said the Goddess doesn’t give pieces of her heart away very often.. but when it does happen.. it’s always on a blue moon. That may be a starting point!”

Axel asks “Why don’t we just ask Luna? She can tell us more than a book, right!?” Shaking my head, again, I tell him “I can’t ask her! She will know I eavesdropped on her.. plus, I don’t think she knows much.. just that her healing powers are stronger than other healers!”

Cole grumbles “If this is another wild chicken chase, I am Not going to be happy! And someone is buying me breakfast!” I laughed and said “Goose” He looks at me, with a stupefied look and asks “What?”

I said “It’s a wild goose chase.. not chicken!” He groans “I am not chicken.. and why are you chasing a goose? If you don’t even think it’s worth looking for… why did you wake me up?”

Now, I’m confused. What is he talking about!!? Axel says “He’s better off going back to bed! It’s like herding cats trying to get him to string two coherent thoughts together.. when he’s tired!”

I guess that makes sense.. My toddlers are more cognizant than he is.. and they are sleeping! I tell him “Go to bed, Cole!”
