Confetti Cannons
Discovering Us 4: Beatitude
VIOLET
Danielâs hand finds its way to my belly again, resting just above my navel. Heâs been more touchy-feely than usual today. Heâs always been a loving guy, but this is a new level. He never used to touch my belly when I was carrying Ella.
âWe kept the pregnancy a secret,â I confess.
He shifts his attention to the white mare standing nearby, stroking her gently. âHas Callum always despised me this much?â he questions.
âHeâs just concerned I might prefer someone younger, someone closer to my age,â I explain.
Daniel turns to face me. His eyes hold a ghost of something before he quickly conceals it, much like Zach does. âDo you want someone younger? Someone like me?â
I shake my head. âNo, Iâm in love with all three of them.â
âThatâs a relief,â he says, reaching out to pet another horse. âI wanted to discuss something with you,â he murmurs.
âSure, whatâs on your mind?â I ask.
âThis is more difficult than I anticipated,â he confesses. I reach out to caress his face, and he leans into my touch, our fingers intertwining.
He takes a deep breath, staring ahead. âViolet, I think I might be bisexual.â
âThatâs wonderful. It opens up more possibilities. Youâll never be bored,â I respond, and he snorts, giving me a sideways glance.
âThatâs why I wanted to talk to you. You never say anything negative.â
âIâm sure Carla would be supportive as well,â I assure him.
âBut Iâm concerned about my dad. He still struggles with Zachâs choices.â
âJerry has come a long way. I think youâll be okay,â I reassure him, nudging him with my shoulder. âDo you have a crush on a boy?â I inquire.
âWell, there was this end-of-school party, and I ended up in bed with a teammate. It was confusing because Iâve never done anything like that before. We didnât do much, but I didnât hate it. Iâve only ever been with one girl before.â
âWait, youâve only ever been with one person before?â
âYes,â he confirms, smirking at me.
âHave you ever had sex, Daniel?â
âNope,â he replies, emphasizing the ~p~ just like Zach does. I canât believe heâs a virgin. Zach and Tyler had me convinced he was a player.
âSo you donât know if you like either gender yet?â
âI like girls, especially their breasts,â he admits, glancing at my chest before smirking and looking away. âI definitely like girls.â
âBut youâve never wanted to do more than kiss and touch?â I ask, puzzled.
âIâm saving myself for my wifeâ¦or maybe my husband,â he shrugs.
âYou should talk to Tyler or Callum about this. Theyâd be better at giving advice,â I suggest, leaning in for one of Danielâs comforting side hugs. I donât even suggest talking to Zach because he would just make a joke out of it.
âI donât think Callum would want to tell me how he sleeps with my brothers.â
I chuckle. Callum would be too mortified to do that.
âBut he could tell you what itâs like to be bisexual.â
âPerhaps,â he concedes, falling silent as he gazes out over the horse fields. âSo, another baby, huh?â
âYes. It was a surprise. I went in to get my birth control updated and found out I was already pregnant.â
âYouâre an amazing mom. Youâll do great with another one.â I want to ask him what he thinks about having two more, but I refrain. Weâre supposed to be surprising everyone.
âWe should head inside before Jerry spills the beans to Carla, Liz, and Lynn,â I suggest, making my way toward the house.
âMy dad can keep a secret, Vi.â
âI hope so,â I respond, laughing as we enter the house hand in hand. He lets go of my hand just outside the kitchen.
âWe wouldnât want the boys to get the wrong idea,â he says, walking ahead of me.
Zach springs into action, distributing envelopes with the twinsâ first ultrasound pictures. Everyone looks puzzled until Zach pulls me into the kitchen.
My cheeks heat up with embarrassment as everyone turns to look at me, grinning.
âWe have a surprise for you,â Callum announces, bouncing Ella on his knee.
âVioletâs pregnant. Open your envelopes,â Tyler instructs. Everyone does, and Carla and Jerry are the first to pull out the ultrasound pictures. They look at me, and Carla starts crying. Liz gasps next, followed by Lynn and Carl exclaiming, âBlimey.â
âYouâre having twins, Vi?â Daniel asks, his eyes wide.
âYes, weâre having twins,â Zach confirms, pulling me against him. Everyone congratulates us, but the surprises arenât over. The boys have planned a gender reveal in the backyard with balloons and confetti cannons.
âWe also have another surprise. We donât know the babiesâ genders yet. We put the information in those balloons and these confetti cannons. We want to find out with all of you in the yard,â Tyler explains. âMom, can you take pictures?â
âOf course, sweetheart.â
âLetâs go. I need to know if Iâm going to have more nieces or nephews,â Daniel says, standing up and heading for the back door.
My nerves start to get the better of me. My palms are sweaty, and my heart is racing.
I donât know what Iâm hoping for. I donât have a preference, and none of the boys have expressed a preference either.
We all just want healthy babies. The doctor wants me on bed rest, which worries me, but Iâll do whatever it takes to keep these miracles safe.
I follow everyone outside, where Callum is standing with one of the balloons. Zach stands next to the other balloon, taking a pin from Tyler.
Jerry and Daniel each hold a confetti cannon, aiming them at us as I stand between the balloons, holding Tylerâs hand.
âAre we ready?â Tyler asks.
Everyone says yes, except for me. Iâm too nervous to speak.
âThree, two, one. Pop the balloons,â Tyler instructs, and they do. Simultaneously, Daniel and Jerry set off the confetti cannons. Weâre showered in blue confetti, and I start crying.
Weâre having twin boys. I can already picture them, with light skin like mine, blue eyes, and brown hair. I can see their dimples as they run around, playing with toy cars and trucks.
âHoly shit, Vi. Youâre in for a wild ride,â Daniel says, grinning at me.
âI hope theyâre not like Zach, or youâre in for a tough eighteen years,â Jerry says, pulling me into a hug. âCongratulations, sweetheart.â
Lynn comes over next, tears in her eyes. âCongratulations. Two boys. Thatâs going to be a handful. Good thing they have so many dads to keep them in line,â she jokes.
âI bet theyâll be nothing like Ella,â I say.
âI think youâre right. Sheâs a very well-behaved baby,â Liz says, hugging me.
âThatâs two for two,â Tyler says, grinning.
âTwin boys, Vi. If theyâre like me, you might just leave,â Zach teases.
âNever,â I assure him, smiling.
