Professor Astor: Chapter 24
Professor Astor (Off-Limits)
âIs it true you were named after a princess?â Colton asks Leia. âOne of my Fortnite friends says you are.â
I lean back against the kitchen counter, realization dawning. âNo way,â I mutter. âTell me you werenât named after Princess Leia?â
She looks up at me for a moment before looking away again. Thatâs the first time sheâs even looked at me today at all. âI was. My father is a huge Star Wars fan. Honestly, I donât even know how my mother let him get away with it. I strongly suspect they initially decided on another name, and when my dad went to register me, he just put down whatever he wanted.â
I chuckle, but she doesnât laugh with me. Instead, she turns to Colton. Sheâs been avoiding me since I got home tonight, and I donât know what to make of it. When I came home yesterday, I wanted to explain to her that what she saw in The Herald wasnât what it looked like, but she didnât seem interested in listening at all. I shouldnât have provoked her by asking her to watch the kids tonight, but just once, I wanted to see her lose her cool over me. I expected her to question me, or to at least give me any indication that sheâs jealous, but she gave me nothing.
âPrincess Leia isnât a real princess, Colt. Sheâs a fictional character,â she says.
âFictional characters feel real, though,â Lucy murmurs, looking up from her book. I wonder if Leia notices that Lucy has really warmed up to her. She used to read in her room, but now sheâll read wherever Leia is, moving along with her from the sofa to the kitchen, and so forth. She still doesnât speak much, but Iâm happy with the progress Iâm seeing. In just a few weeks, these two have become closer than I expected them to be.
âYeah, youâre right. Who is your favorite princess?â
âBelle,â she says dreamily. âI want her library.â
Leia smiles then, her first real smile tonight. âMe too, Lucy. When I was growing up, one of my biggest wishes was to have that library. Iâll take you to the college library someday soon, because itâs the closest thing to it that I know of. Would you like that?â
Lucy lights up, but all she does is shrug. âI guess.â
Leia looks a little defeated, and it takes all of me to keep my mouth shut. I want to tell her not to be discouraged, but Iâve decided that I wonât interfere in the relationship between Leia and Lucy. Itâs something special, whether either of them realises it or not.
âWho is your favorite princess?â I ask Leia.
She looks at me, a hint of annoyance in her eyes. âIâm not sure,â she says, looking away.
Sheâs been standoffish with me, and while it isnât the jealousy I was expecting, itâs something at least.
I straighten my t-shirt and smile at Lucy. âHow do I look?â I ask her, provoking Leia further.
Leiaâs eyes run over my body, seemingly dispassionate, but I see the anger she tries to hide.
âYou look cute, Dad.â
âCute? Is that good or bad?â
The look Lucy throws me is one that can only be described as pitiful. âItâs⦠fine. You look fine.â
âWhat do you think?â I ask Leia.
Leia glances at Lucy before turning back to me and nodding. âI agree. You look cute.â
These two women⦠theyâre conspiring against me.
Leia grabs the papers she was grading at the breakfast bar and straightens them, keeping her hands busy. I noticed thatâs something she does when sheâs restless, but despite those thoughts going through her mind, she wonât ask me where Iâm going tonight. I wish she would.
âI think you look great, Dad. Is Uncle Silas bringing one of his cool cars? Do you think heâll take me for a ride around the block before you leave?â
Leia freezes, her eyes slowly moving toward me, and I smirk at the relief I see in her eyes.
âI donât know, buddy. If you ask him nicely, heâll probably let you.â
âCool,â he says. âTake some pics for me, Leia. My friends will lose it. I should ask him to drive me to school one day.â
I shake my head. Does this kid not realize that weâre just as rich as my best friend is? The only reason we donât have supercars is because they arenât safe enough.
Colton jumps up and makes a run for it when the doorbell rings, and before long, I hear Silasâs voice behind me. âIâll see you later,â I tell Leia. âOnce the kids are in bed, youâre welcome to use any of the guest rooms and catch an early night too. Iâm not sure what time Iâll be back.â
She nods, still looking flustered. âHave fun with your friend,â she says hesitantly, and I nod, an indulgent smile on my face.
Itâs almost impossible to get Colton out of Silasâs Ferrari, but eventually, we make it to the bar right outside his building. Colt doesnât know it, but the only reason Silas came to pick me up at all was so my son could mess around with his car for a bit. Silas is like that. Quiet, but with a heart of gold.
âThatâs her, isnât it? Your nanny? Sheâs the girl you were obsessing over,â he says the moment we sit down.
âHow did you know?â I ask, but then I shake my head. Reading people is what Silas does. He runs the best and most expensive private security firm in this State. He probably knows exactly who Leia is. Hell, he probably knew the moment I hired her. Heâs always quietly looked out for my family and me.
âWhat are you going to do? You let her get away once, are you going to let her slip away again?â
âDamn, Silas. Buy me a fucking drink first, man. Whatâs with the interrogation?â
He leans against the bar and smirks at me. âSomeone has to ask you these questions, Thor. No one will do it but me. I always knew Alice wasnât for you. You never lost your mind over her, the way you did over Leia.â
Itâs true. âSheâs one of my PhD students and sheâs my childrenâs nanny. Sheâs also Amaraâs best friend. Sheâs as fucking off-limits as it gets.â
Silas nods. âBut she wonât always be. Someday soon, sheâll graduate. If the kids love her, then why wouldnât they love her as a stepmom too? Besides, letâs be real, if you tell Amara youâre making her best friend family, sheâll be your biggest cheerleader.â
âFucking hell, Silas.â This is the reason Iâve been dreading seeing him. He has this way of instilling hope in me that I have no business having. I know his words will be resounding through my mind for weeks to come. Would Leia wait for me? Sheâs still a few months away from finishing her PhD. Would she want to be with me after she graduates? And if she does, will the kids be okay with it? Perhaps, by then, theyâll have grown accustomed to having her in their lives.
Itâs hard to push down the joy the mental picture brings me, but I know Iâm being unrealistic. While itâd be an ideal situation from my perspective, chances of Leia wanting to be involved with me are pretty slim. My night with her was filled with dreams of her own family, of a love that grew through the years. She wants to experience every step, starting with dating, moving into an engagement and at last, a wedding and everything that comes with that. If she were to be with me, sheâd be forced to skip most steps, ending up with a family before sheâs even ready.
âI found her, you know. I found Alanna.â
I turn toward Silas, my eyes wide. Other than Alice, heâs the only person I ever told about Leia, and the only reason I felt comfortable doing so is because his story is somewhat similar to mine.
âHow? Where?â
He looks away. âYou wonât fucking believe this, man. She was dating my asshole little brother.â
I tense, my heart sinking. Silasâs relationship with his half-brother has always been rocky, but this⦠âDid he target her intentionally?â
He looks at me and shakes his head. âI havenât found any evidence of it, but I have my suspicions.â
Fuck. âIf sheâs dating your brotherâ¦â
âWas,â he corrects me. âDo you really think something like that would stop me? Itâs Alanna.â
I chuckle and shake my head. âRight.â
âIt gets worse, though,â he tells me.
I raise my brows in question. âShe applied for a job at my firm, and I hired her.â
I chuckle, laughing at his expense. âYouâre fucking kidding me.â
âNah man. Not only did she date my brother, sheâs my damn employee too.â
âWeâre both fucked.â
Silas nods. âIndeed, we are.â
