Chapter 10
The Hockey Star’s Remorse
Chapter 10
Evie
I stammer, shifting uncomfortably on my feet. I had never told him this is my dream. At least, I didnât remember that I did. It
scares me to think about what happened back then. That night had caused a lot of personal issues with who I was as a person. I
had to work so hard to find the girl I was. Even now, my past distorts
who I am.
But if I look hard enough at the events that had occurred, even before that night, I would see it all so much more clearly.
Six Years Ago
The bell rings and I pack up my backpack. Relief flooded through me as I toss it over my shoulder and start to head out of the
classroom. With my head down, not expecting anyone to try and approach me, I ram face-first into a solid chest.
âOuch,â I groan in annoyance. âWatch your pectorals.â
âSorry,â a hauntingly familiar voice laughs softly. âYou okay, Evie?â
I slowly look up into the eyes of my one true crush. Timothy. Words became foreign to me as I tried to utter something, anything.
All I manage to say was, âSolid chest.â
Timothy laughs again, the sound tickling every inch of my skin. âIâm glad we ran into each other,â he jokes easily, running a hand
through his longer hair.
âHow do you even know me,â I ask in horrified amazement.
Timothy snorts. âWe live in the same neighborhood,â he answers. âIâve seen you. walk to school for the past three months. I
could've driven you, you know.â
I shake my head in disbelief. âI prefer to protect the environment,â I utter hazily, unable to pull my eyes off him. âWait. Youâve
been watching me?â
âDon't act so surprised,â he chuckles. âIâm not completely self absorbed.â
Could have fooled me.

âWhat,â he asks, laughing awkwardly.
âI did not just say that out loud,â I gasp, covering my mouth in absolute horror.
âDamn, Sinclair,â he laughed. âTell me how you really feel.â
âOh, my god. Iâm sorry. I didnât mean-
âRelax,â he grins. âI like girls who can put me in my place a bit.â
âReally,â I ask worriedly.
He nods. âI was actually hoping to extend an invite to the class grad party,â he smirks. âNo parental supervision. Just us kids
being idiots and living it up. Itâs okay if you donât come, but just know you will be sorely missed.â
I laugh awkwardly. âI didnât think I was that big of a deal,â I say slowly.
He nods, brows furrowing. âAbsolutely you are. How could not invite our valedictorian?â
âI'm not even going to be the one giving the speech,â I whisper up to him.
âWho cares,â he dismisses. âEveryone zones out during the speeches anyway.â
I nod. âOkay,â I swallow. âWhat time is the party?â
His face lights up.
âAre you actually going to consider it,â he asks hopefully.
âlll ask my dad,â I answer.
âParty starts at nine,â he says, smile still wide. âThe actual party doesnât really start till ten. But youâre always welcome at my
house.â
Oh, god. Did Timothy Hayes just invite me to his graduation party? Did he just tell me I was always welcome?
Butterflies erupt through every inch of my body.
âI'll see you there, then,â I swallow.
âI'll see ya there, Evie.â
My gaze followed him as he walked off.

What am I supposed to do with this? I wasnât the partygoing type. I am strictly an academic who follows the book. I donât even
have anything to wear to a house party. From what Iâve gathered, girls like to wear skinâtight clothes and short, short dresses. I
had none of those things.
I look down at myself. I was wearing a cable knit sweater and a pleated skirt. I look like a nun for god sake.
Even still, Timothy had noticed me in this attire. He made a point to find me. Maybe it didnât really matter what I wore because,
maybe, he found me attractive. for my intellect.
Maybe he liked me for who I was.
Six Years Later
We hadnât moved from our spots. My weariness toward Timothyâs congratulatory remarks had curbed much of the overwhelming
feeling of giddiness. I had been. made a joke because of him and his friends. He had turned me into the butt of a joke.
For six years, I thought every bit of laughter I heard, was directed at me. I was, and still am, paranoid that everyone knew about
my run-in with the playboy hockey star. It had been a waking nightmare trying to get myself over the fact that not everyone is out
to get me.
But I had been running from facing this baggage for too long. Now I just feel stuck on repeat having to relive that terrible feeling
over and over and over again.
âThanks,â I finally manage to force out.
He nods, guilt washing over his features. âI know you donât trust me,â he says quietly.
âYou're right,â I answer hoarsely. âI hope you can understand.â
He nods, giving the saddest laugh Iâve ever heard. âOf course I do,â he says. âI just hope that I can regain that trust.â
wrap my arms around my body, self-consciously. âHow- how did you know I wanted to be a lawyer?â
Timothy stiffens, face becoming beet red. I frown as he becomes a stammering

âTimothy,â I ask, folding my arms. âYou didnât hire a private investigator, did you?â
