Chapter 167
A Farewell After Being Reborn
Henry hastily reached out and ended the call when he heard the dial tone. âWhatâs the meaning of this,
Ms. Joyner?â
He expected Sage to be ashamed of herself after being caught redâhanded. Why did she call Ian
herself?
âIsnât it obvious? I wanted to give him a little scare just to see where I stand with him,â she lied through
her teeth.
He fell silent when he heard that. He had looked into it even though Ivy hadnât told him anything and
refused to allow him to probe further. He was aware that Ian didnât care about Sage, so he assumed
she was using him to get back at him and hurt Layla at the same time. After all, he had the means to do
so.
Hence, he didnât mind helping Sage test Ian.
âSo, youâre not attempting to ruin my relationship with Layla⦠youâre just using me?â he asked.
Sage chuckled. âSure, whatever floats your boat. However, youâre right about one thingâI donât want
you to be with Layla because I donât think youâre good enough for her.â
His expression changed slightly when he heard that. âHow am I not good enough for her?â
âI mean⦠you claim that you came to Haldon to start a business, but all Iâve seen is you hanging
around Layla.â
She paused before continuing, âIâm sure youâve seen her admiration for her brotherâinâlaw at the
parking lot last time. That is the reason why I believe sheâd only fancy a guy whoâs got his career
together.â
Sage brought this up on purpose because she vaguely remembered her aunt bragging about Laylaâs
boyfriend in her previous life, claiming that he was not only wealthy but also extremely capable. He had
acquired the distribution rights for a drug and received an investment shortly after he arrived in Haldon.
However, Ivy probably hadnât had the time to plan these things in this life, so Henry hadnât secured that
distribution yet.
Sage wanted to push Henry into desiring rapid success in his career. Then, Ivy would have to start
considering this issue. After all, she wanted them to feel this urgency.
Sure enough, his expression darkened after he heard that. âI just havenât found the right business
opportunity yet, Ms. Joyner. Iâm not as carefree as you think. I will prove myself to you and Layla!â

Sage smiled. âIâm sure not only Layla will be impressed if you succeed, but so will my uncle and aunt.
However, talk is cheap. I hope you donât let Layla look down on you again.â
Even though he was displeased by her condescending words, he didnât let it show He maintained his
composure and stood up. âDo you need a ride home, Ms. Joyner?â
âThanks for the offer, but I drove here,â Sage replied.
Then, she casually added, âBy the way, Mr. York, didnât you say you hadnât gotten around to buying a
car yet? I think it would be more convenient for you to do so since youâre planning to start a business in
Haldon. Donât you think so?â
Sage wanted Henry to keep asking Ivy for money. This would make them more desperate to land the
project.
âOf course.â Henry forced a smile. âIâll be going now, Ms. Joyner.â
âAlright.â Sage couldnât help but smile wryly when she realized that Ian hadnât returned her call even
after Henry had left.
There were two reasons why she made that call in front of Henry. First, she wanted to use Ian to make
Henry back off. Second, she was hoping it would make lan angry enough to want a
divorce.
Thank goodness Henry hung up for her. Otherwise, Ian wouldnât have answered her call at all, and she
wouldâve been embarrassed in front of him.
