Matthew glanced at Joshua sitting silently on the couch and said to Cynthia, “There’s something I need

your help with.”

“What is it?” Cynthia responded calmly.

“I want you to come back with me for the New Year and pretend to be my girlfriend,” Matthew said.

Cynthia was surprised. “Me? Why not ask Gaby and Riley instead? I’m not very good at it.”

She gave a similar response the last time, never considering that Matthew had feelings for her.

After all, meeting parents and making a good first impression was important. Cynthia was slow to warm

up, and her personality was somewhat reserved. When she married Joshua, it was only after gradually

getting to know his family that she became close with them,

for the New Year’s Eve dinner at home.”

Matthew was a good person, and he had been kind to them. Hence, it did not seem right for him to be

scolded on New Year’s Eve. Moreover, it was just a play–acting and not a real relationship.

“You agree?” Matthew was pleasantly surprised.

“Yes.” Cynthia nodded.

Matthew smiled, and his eyes lit up. “Thank you.”

Joshua frowned when he saw them laughing and joking. Summoning his courage, he stood up and

said, “Cynthia.”

“What’s wrong?” Cynthia looked at him.

Joshua held his stomach and began to pretend, “My stomach hurts.”

Cynthia stood up and went to check on him. Not finding anything abnormal, she thought it might be a

problem with his internal organs. “Is it very painful?”

“Yeah…” Joshua’s face crumpled.

“I’ll take you to the hospital,” Cynthia blurted out.

Joshua’s heart skipped a beat. If he went to the hospital, Cynthia would find out he was pretending!

“There’s no need to go to the hospital.” Matthew stood up and walked over. “It’s probably just

indigestion from overeating. Just rest for a while, and you’ll be fine.”
