The Prom Confession
Dealer's Girl
Madi POV:
It was already Friday. Prom was tonight and I was getting ready at my house. Liv and Lizzie were gonna pick me up so I was waiting for them now. I got dressed and did my hair and makeup. I realized I needed my camera for pictures so I walked to my room. I heard knocking at the door.
"It's open!" I called. I heard the door open as they walked in. "I can take some pictures on my polaroid camera but we'll only get one copy-"
My words died down as it wasn't Lizzie or Liv standing in my living room.
It was Lexa.
She was wearing a suit. A tight fitted suit with a yellow tie. The same color as my dress.
"Lexa?" I whispered in shock.
"You really shouldn't keep your door unlocked." Lexa smiled a bit.
"What is- What are you- Are you-" I couldn't even finish a sentence. "What?"
"I'm here to take you to prom." Lexa walked over to me and held out a bouquet of sunflowers.
I took the flowers as tears gathered in my eyes.
"Hey, don't cry." She brushed a stray lock of hair out of my eyes. "You'll ruin your makeup."
I chuckled as I dabbed my eyes. "Lexa...how are you here?"
"I walked through your unlocked front door." She whispered with a smile.
"No, I mean...how? You said you didn't want to go to prom. Did you lie just to do this?" I asked.
"No. Actually, your friends knocked at my door and demanded I'd go with you." She smiled.
"My friends?" I questioned.
"Olivia and Elizabeth." Lexa answered.
They did that for me?
"Wait, so you're only coming because they asked you to?" My voice cracked.
"No. I came because no matter how hard I try to push these feelings for you away, I can't. I can't stop thinking about you. I want to be around you all the time and if it means suffering at a high school event just to see a smile on your face, then so be it." Lexa stepped closer to me.
"You have feelings for me?" I whispered, a smile breaking out on my face.
"I have so many feelings for you." Lexa stared into my eyes.
"I have so many feelings for you too." I repeated her words.
"Will you go to prom with me?" Lexa asked.
"Yes!" I moved forward and hugged her.
When we pulled away from the hug she motioned to the camera in my hands. "We taking a picture?"
"Just one." I smiled at her as I set the camera on the table. I pushed the timer and this time we were actually looking at the camera.
Liv texted me and said she was outside.
"Liv's outside." I told Lexa.
"Then let's go." She held out her hand.
I smiled and we left the house and right to Liv's car. I saw Lizzie, Matt, Chase and Liv in the car.
"Hey!" I smiled at them. Lexa and I got in the backseat. Liv was driving her Mom's van so we all could fit.
Jack and Flora would meet us at the dance. We listened to music on the way and my hand didn't leave Lexa's the entire time.
Liv wore a dark pink dress with a slit up the leg. Lizzie had a similar dress but hers was a dark purple. Their dates had matching ties with their dresses.
When we arrived the school looked so different I didn't believe we were at the same place. The theme was 'Under The Sea'. The lights were blue and there were fish and starfish decorations everywhere.
"Hey, guys!" Jack waved us over. There was a girl in a pretty red dress beside him. We joined them. "This is Flora. Flora, this is Lizzie, Matt, Chase, Liv, Madi and...Lexa." He said Lexa's name as if he was surprised she was here. I'm sure he was surprised.
We moved to a table with eight seats. Lexa looked around the room with raised eyebrows.
"Ever been to prom?" I asked her.
"No." Lexa shook her head, looking at me.
"Do you like it so far?" I then asked.
"I like that you're here." She smiled.
I smiled back.
"Food isn't ready for another hour!?" Lizzie groaned.
"We can get group photos before then if you guys want?" Liv spoke up.
Everyone agreed and we stood, walking over to the photographer.
I felt a hand grab mine and looked down to see Lexa's hand. I smiled to myself as we joined the line.
"We'll do group first and then just one with our dates." Liv explained. Everyone agreed because we stood behind the underwater backdrop and smiled.
Lexa and I moved to the side as we let everyone go first.
"I might actually jump off a cliff if that picture gets out." Lexa muttered.
"But you look amazing." I told her.
"I look amazing? Have you looked in the mirror, sunshine?" Lexa looked me up and down.
"Have you?" I retorted.
"Madi, Lexa, your turn!" Chase called.
I grabbed Lexa's hand as we stood in front of the backdrop.
"What do we do?" Lexa asked me.
I turned around so my back was to her and I grabbed her arms, wrapping them around me. I looked over my shoulder at her and she was already looking at me with a look that made my heart flutter.
The flash of the camera went off and the picture was done.
"We weren't looking." Lexa whispered to me.
"I don't want another." I whispered back.
We moved back to the group and everyone was staring at Lizzie. She was staring directly at the food line. The minute the man moved the sign to 'open' she screamed.
"The food's open!" Lizzie grabbed Matt's arm and they ran to the line. Matt was laughing along the way.
"Shall we?" Jack held out his elbow for Flora. Flora smiled and accepted it as they followed.
"Come on." Liv looked at Chase, Lexa and I as us four walked to the line.
I was surprised to say the food was actually really good. We all ate dinner and drank Shirley Temple's as they talked about the after party.
"There's an after party?" I questioned.
"Of course there is!" Lizzie smiled.
"Are you coming?" Liv asked.
"Oh, uh..." I looked over at Lexa.
Lexa just stared at me. She wanted me to make the choice.
"Actually, no. I think one party is enough for us." I nudged Lexa with my elbow.
"Can we still get some enhancers before we go?" Matt whispered to Lexa.
"Sure." She nodded.
The best thing about my friends is they respected my wishes when I didn't like to party.
After we finished eating I looked at the time. It was already nine. Prom ended at eleven.
"Everyone's dancing." Chase spoke up.
"Well, let's join them." Liv smirked as she stood.
Everyone got up and I looked at Lexa.
"Dance with me?" Lexa asked.
I was shocked she asked first.
"Always." I stood as we moved to stand by my friends and she twirled me around under her arm.
Of course once we joined everyone the party music stopped and the slow one began.
I watched as everyone grabbed their dates and began swaying to the music.
"Like this." Lexa grabbed my arms and put them around her neck. She placed her hands on my waist as we moved back and forth.
"Have you ever slow danced before?" I asked her.
"Never. Have you?" She then asked.
"Nope. I'm glad you're my first." I whispered.
Lexa began to laugh. I furrowed my eyebrows. Did I say something funny?
"What?" A laugh came out of me too.
"I love when you say things that mean a completely different thing." Lexa's laugh turned into chuckles.
"What did I say?" I asked.
"Sometimes people say 'I'm glad you're my first' or something about the other person being their 'first' when they have sex for the first time."
I really hope she couldn't see how red my cheeks were. "How come my words always lead back to sex?"
"I don't know, but it's hilarious." Lexa smiled.
At least I made her smile.
We stared into each other's eyes as the music got louder and everyone faded away.
"Can I kiss you?" Lexa whispered.
I only got one nod in before she moved forward and her lips pressed against mine.
Finally.
We were forced to pull away to catch our breath. My forehead remained pressed against hers until I looked up at her.
"I've wanted to do that for a while." Lexa put her hand on my cheek.
"I've wanted you to do that for a while too." I nodded, staring into her eyes.
She chuckled and kissed me again.
Another hour later and everyone was starting to leave.
"Why are people leaving? It's only ten thirty." I looked at everyone leaving.
"They wanna get to the after party." Lizzie told me.
"You guys ready then?" Liv asked everyone. She was the driver. Everyone agreed and she turned to Jack and Flora. "We'll meet you there. Gonna get some...enhancers first." She whispered as a teacher walked by.
Jack's eyes went to Lexa but then he looked back at Liv. "Alright. We'll see you there."
Our group walked to the car and Lexa and I sat in the seat near the door so we could get out first. Everyone was talking about prom and how fun it was but I could not get my mind off that kiss. I mean...wow.
We pulled up to Lexa's apartment and we both got out.
"I'll go in. Be right back." Lizzie got out of the car and followed us up.
"You got cash?" Matt asked.
"...no." Lizzie realized.
"Here." He gave her money.
"You're so sweet." Lizzie pinched his cheeks and he swatted her hands away with a smile.
The three of us went to Lexa's apartment and Lexa went into her room to get the drugs.
"Girl, I saw that kiss." Lizzie whispered with a giant smile on her face.
"Shh!" I shushed her with a smile of my own. "It was amazing."
"It looked amazing. I know you two are gonna continue and I want details tomorrow. A group call: me, you and Liv." Lizzie said.
I laughed and nodded.
"Here you are." Lexa handed Lizzie the drugs.
"Perfect. And here you are." Lizzie handed Lexa the cash.
"Pleasure doing business with you." Lexa counted the cash.
"Have fun, lovebirds." Lizzie giggled as she left the apartment.
"Do I dare say you had fun at prom?" I looked at Lexa.
"You say it and you can walk home." Lexa joked. "What was your favorite part?"
"I'll show you." I said, boldly. Where the hell did that come from? But before I knew it, I grabbed Lexa by the cheeks and pulled her face to mine so we kissed again.
I felt Lexa toss the cash on the table as she wrapped her arms around me.
We kissed for maybe ten minutes before we pulled apart. I needed to remove these heels.
"Can I change into shorts and a t-shirt?" I asked her. I was sweating in all these layers.
"Yeah, in my room you can search through the bottom drawers." Lexa turned to the kitchen. "I'll get us some water."
I walked into Lexa's room. I have never been in here. It was a dark aesthetic. Black walls, dark red bed sheets. Neon signs. Some had bad words. Okay, most had bad words. I looked at the mirror beside her bed. My cheeks were flushed and a smile was still on my face.
I don't think anything can ruin how happy I am right now.
I dug through the drawers until I found a t-shirt and shorts. Before I could change, my eyes caught something on the floor. I saw my name on a piece of paper.
Did I drop that?
No, it was halfway in her closet.
I slowly opened the closet. I saw jackets and flannels on the hangers but the picture below dropped at my feet.
I picked up the paper. My name was at the bottom but there was nothing on it.
Until I flipped it over.
Then my heart dropped.
The same picture I made my best friend eight years ago.
A sunflower and a hibiscus.
My favorite flower and-
No.
No way.
