Chapter 270
Master of his heart (Brielle and Max)
A shadow of darkness flitted across her eyes. If that was the case, why couldnât they get Lillian out?
As Miranda mulled over this, her cell phone rang. It was Robert calling. Robert sounded irritated, âWhere are you? Weâve got the full picture on Lillianâs situation. The police are adamantâas long as Brielle doesnât crack, Lillian isnât going anywhere.â
A chill ran through Mirandaâs gaze; it seemed she had been too lenient with Brielle earlier, and now she was still refusing to settle things privately.
Robertâs next words deflated her completely. âStay away from Brielle for now. The Haywood familyâs clients have all been poached by rival firms, and theyâre crucial to us. None of them. are taking my calls. I suspect Max is behind this. If itâs really him, then the Haywood family is in jeopardy. Heâs taking it out for Brielle because of what Lillian did. Donât stir up more trouble. Mirandaâs vision went dark, her heart pounding at the thought of her recent actions. âHoney, are you sure? I heard Max left the country.
Why would he care about Brielle? Could there be some mistake?â
Robert took a deep breath, not wanting to explain too much. All these women ever thought. about were their petty squabbles. âJust steer clear of her. If Max really swiped the Haywood familyâs clients, heâs likely got more up his sleeve.â
Before he could finish, Cameron walked in, an aura of gloom about him. âFather, weâve lost. another bunch of clients. Theyâve all signed with our competitors. A dozen partners served us. termination notices all at once. I just got a call from the shareholdersâtheyâre calling an emergency meeting. Things are looking grim.â
Cameron slumped down, rubbing his hair in frustration. âI reached out to some close partners. They were evasive, hinting weâd crossed someone. Even Mr. Connor from Apex Dynamics wonât take my calls.â
Anxiety creased Cameronâs face. His phone rang, and he picked up urgently. The news from the other end was so shocking, his phone clattered to the floor.
âWhatâs going on?â Robert exclaimed, startled.
Cameron turned, his eyes devoid of life. âMr. Connor got in touch. Itâs Max. He didnât say much. just that, then hung up. Dad, weâre done for.â
Miranda, still on the line, heard every word. The mere mention of Max sent their minds. crashing, unable to think.
When this business prodigy made a move, others stood little chance, especially with ant apparent vendetta against the Haywood family.
Miranda stood up, panicâstricken, her palms slick with sweat. Max was targeting the Haywood family because of Brielle? But she had just spilled coffee on Brielle. What now?
Catherine, seeing Mirandaâs distress after the call, hurriedly asked, âWhatâs wrong?â
Before Miranda could answer, Catherineâs own phone rang. It was her husband. With a smile, she excused herself from the other ladies and answered.
Her husbandâs voice was urgent, becoming serious and grave by the end of the call. âMax has made a move against the Haywood family. Keep it under wraps for now, and avoid the Haywoods. Max means business this time.â
Confusion crossed Catherineâs face. Why would Max target the Haywood family? Werenât Lillian and Spencer childhood sweethearts?
âWhatâs he got against the Haywood family?â Catherine asked, glancing at a frantic Miranda; this had to be serious. After all, when Max made a move, what chance did the others have? The Haywood family must be down on their luck.
âI just had dinner with Mr. Connor from Apex Dynamics. It took some coaxing, but he admitted itâs because of Brielle. Max has taken a shine to her, and now sheâs in his heart. Lillian paid at driver to hit Brielle, sending her to the hospital with a broken leg. Max is furious, defending his ladyâs honor. That Brielle must be something else.â
Catherine felt a shiver down her spine, swallowing hard. Was it the Brielle she knew? âWhich Brielle, honey? Are you sure youâre not joking? Isnât Brielle Spencerâs exâfiancée?!â
