Chapter 985
Substitutee Marriage: Fallingg For My Ugly Wifee
She coughed, averting her eyes from Bruceâs knowing gaze.
âI was just practicing calligraphy,â she stammered, quickly writing another word to cover her tracks.
Bruce crossed his arms, not calling her out on the apparent lie.
Millie continued to write, intent on making her story about practicing calligraphy seem believable.
Bruce shifted to get a better view of Millieâs lovely face, then suddenly asked, âMillie, what would you do
if Marcus were to die one day?â

Millieâs hand, holding the wooden branch, froze in place. Frowning, she turned to look at Bruce, who
spread his hands innocently. âIâm just imagining things, donât be alarmed.â
Millieâs reaction was as Bruce expected, both nervous and angry. He had touched a nerve with his
teasing.
âYouâre being tedious,â Millie complained.
Bruce pressed on, his tone more somber.
âIâm not just spouting nonsense. Ever since Marcus took control of the Thomas Group, heâs made many
enemies. There are those who want him dead.â
Millieâs grip on the branch tightened, but her reply was steadfast.
âHe wonât be in danger easily.â
Bruce shrugged, a smile playing on his lips. âYou have great confidence in Marcus.â
His laughter faded, and his eyes grew dark. Logically, Marcus should have succumbed to the poison of
the Bloody Herb and die.
âMillieâ¦â Bruce began, but Millie, clearly irritated by the conversationâs direction, cut him off.
âAnything else? Well, even if he is in danger, I can grant him a life, okay?â
Bruce was taken aback by Millieâs incredible assertion.
âYou can give him a life?â
âYes, I have nine lives. I can spare one for him and still have eight left,â Millie replied.
Bruce was left dumbfounded by her words. Her serious expression made it hard to believe she was
joking.
Millie set down the branch and stood, clapping her hands to rid them of dirt. With a furrowed brow, she
began to walk away, leaving Bruce behind.
What had he meant by his words? Surely, he wasnât so insensitive as to casually discuss Marcusâ
death in front of her.
Bruce, realizing he had angered Millie, hurried after her. Her departure had been marked by an
uncharacteristic gloom, and he felt a pang of fear.
âThen you can also grant me one life.â
