Chapter 234

Naomi handed Melanie a few tissues and comforted her. âLetâs go to the hospital to check on Jessicaâs
condition. Then, weâll search for some clues to see what charges to press.â
âThank you, Naomi.â Melanie stared at Naomi as if she were hope and justice personified.
Naomiâs breakthrough in Charlesâ case was all over the news. So, her acquaintances and past classmates
held her on a pedestal, proud to have such a classmate.
Naomi had always been popular in school for her beauty. Now, all the schools she attended took pride in
her, especially Ashburgh University.
Naomi was still young, with a bright future ahead. She would only go up from here. They were sure she
would come to handle more major cases and even make international news.
She was even as famous internationally as Brendan. Of course, those were stories for later.
After accompanying Melanie to the hospital to see Jessica and reviewing some photos provided by
Melanie, Naomi could tell that Jessica had indeed been abused.
A more detailed examination would likely reveal more old injuries.
The photos Melanie had taken of Jessica back when the latter had first been taken to the hospital even
showed a visible bruise on her neck.
Therefore, it definitely wasnât a simple couple quarrel that had driven Jessica to jump from the building.
Who knew how she had managed to get over the railings to begin with?
Back at her desk, Naomi studied the evidence before her with a heavy heart. Memories of Brendanâs push
occasionally flashed across her mind.
Just then, the bedroom door opened. But Naomi was clueless and didnât realize that Brendan had entered.
Brendan walked over with a cup of hot milk. When he saw her in her glasses, fully immersed in her work, he placed the milk in front of her. âDid you take on a new case again?â
Charlesâ case had just ended, and Naomi hadnât gotten much rest after that. Yet she was busying herself
with work again.
Naomi didnât look up from her work. âYes! Itâs a case from one of my high school classmates. They
suspect their sister was being domestically abused, and the other party even attempted murder recently.â
Brendan grew alert at this. âIs your classmate a man or a woman?â
Naomi chuckled, temporarily pausing her work to face Brendan. âItâs a man.â
She added, âAnd thereâs something between us too.â
Seeing Brendanâs dark look, Naomi quickly explained, âItâs a woman! What were you thinking about?â
With that, Naomi continued to organize the evidence.
After visiting Jessica in the hospital that day, Naomi planned to take on the case. But she was still deciding on the charges. She wasnât ruling out the possibility of attempted murder, either.
Seeing Naomiâs seriousness, Brendan decided to let her be. He took a book and put on his glasses, lying on the bed to read.
Midnight came, and Brendan was about to remind Naomi to go to bed when he saw her stretch lazily, preparing to call it a night.
After tidying up the documents on the desk, Naomi rubbed her neck and sat down next to Brendan.
He turned to her and asked, âArenât you afraid of having your view on life affected after dealing with all these every day?â
Naomi smiled. âItâs precisely because Iâve seen the worst in people that Iâm looking toward a brighter future. I hope my efforts will create a fairer society.â
Brendan observed Naomiâs gaze, noting the twinkling look in her eyes.
He suddenly remembered that when Naomi had been in junior high, sheâd run after a bus for two whole
stops to catch a hitâandârun bus driver.
And in college, sheâd saved a child from being hit by a car in Baileyâs neighborhood. The parents had mistaken her for a criminal, but later, after reviewing the neighborhood surveillance footage, her name
had been cleared,
Naomi had always been involved in similar deeds. But as sheâd grown older, sheâd learned to keep her
cool better.
As Naomi took off her coat and slipped into bed, Brendan turned off the light and hugged her tightly.
