Outsider
Alpha and Aurora
RORY
The second we step out of the car, Lucius rushes up to Everett.
âAlpha, the council has called an emergency meeting,â he says in a hushed tone.
âIs there a problem?â Everett asks.
Lucius glances at me and then at Freya. Sheâs standing beside me, clinging to my hand. I squeeze back.
âThey just need to speak with you right away,â Lucius says.
Itâs probably nothing. Maybe itâs some secret pack business he doesnât want to discuss in front of ~another~ human.
I canât expect everyone to be in a sharing mood right away.
âWill you two be okay?â Everett asks, turning to me.
âWeâll be great,â I say. âWe have a lot to do.â
Everett and Lucius leave us and I turn to Freya, feeling a little guilty that she hasnât received a warmer welcome.
âEverything is soâ¦big,â she says, casting her eyes across the buildings and the surrounding area.
âJust wait till you see my bedroom,â I say, taking her hand and leading her inside. âAnd the library!â
***
âI donât think Iâve ever seen so many books,â Freya says, twirling between two shelves. Sheâs been impressed with everything Iâve shown her.
âYour bed looks fit for a princess,â she said when I showed her my room.
âThink of the amazing balls you could have in here,â she said when I walked her through the dining hall.
âHow old is that painting?!â she said, gawking at a portrait of one of Everettâs ancestors.
But the thing thatâs impressed her the most so far is the library.
âWhere do all these books even come from?â she says, marveling at Everettâs impressive collection. âWhat are they all about?â
âThereâs a lot about the packâs history and wolf customs. You have no idea how many ceremonies and rituals there are when youâre a wolf.â
âI feel like I could spend weeks in here. You must have read lots of them by now.â
I blush a little and turn my feet inward. âActually, I havenât had that much time.â
Part of becoming luna means embracing the packâs traditions and customs. Theyâre all here in these books, but I havenât had a chance to dive in just yet.
Iâve had math finals and prom dresses to think about.
I promised Everett Iâd get stuck in once school was over.
âGosh, if I were you I would have dropped out of school and spent all my time reading these books instead of boring old Gatsby!â
âYeah, Iâm going to get to it,â I say, rubbing the back of my neck. âSoon.â
âSo how long have werewolves existed? And how come humans donât know anything about them?â
~She has a lot of questions.~
âIs the whole silver bullet thing true? If that thing on your neck is a mating mark does that mean youâre ~not~ having kinky sex?â
âFreya!â Heat rises in my cheeks.
âSorry, itâs all just so fascinating. You said their wolves have personalities of their own. So is that like split personalities, or like, is one of them in charge and the other like a parasite?â
âI think Chaos might be offended if you call him a parasite.â
âRiiiiiightâ¦â She chews on her fingernail. âHow come they can shift anytime they like and not just on the full moon?â
âFreya! I donât know!â
Freya is starting to annoy me with all her questions, but the truth is I should know.
~Shouldnât I?~
Standing here surrounded by all these booksâall this knowledge about the people and the pack Iâm supposed to leadâIâm beginning to realize how little I know about all this.
I rest my forehead in my hand.
~Have I been a bad luna for not trying hard enough to learn this stuff?~
There are still so many books I havenât even touched.
âRory, are you okay?â Freya asks timidly.
âIâm fine,â I say, lifting my head.
Then, wanting desperately to change the subject, I ask, âMy mom is probably over at the orphanage. Sheâs been teaching the kids how to grow their own vegetables. You wanna go visit?â
âSure!â
***
âHi, Mama!â I say, wrapping my arms around the amazing woman who raised me.
âMy darling,â she replies, squeezing me tightly.
âMom, Iâd like to introduce you to Freya.â
Mama turns to my friend with tears in her eyes and pulls her in for the biggest, most embarrassing hug ever.
âMama, donât choke her!â
âIâm so pleased to finally meet you,â Mama says, not letting Freya go. âIâve heard so much about you and all the wonderful things youâve done for Rory.â
âItâs lovely to meet you too,â Freya chokes out.
Finally, Mama releases Freya and sheâs able to breathe once more.
âYouâve been such an amazing friend to Rory all these years,â Mama is a mess, sheâs blubbering everywhere. âYouâre such a blessing.â
Itâs clear Freya doesnât know what to say. She keeps opening her mouth as if sheâs about to speak and then closing it again.
âMama, youâre being embarrassing,â I say. Mom slaps me with a pair of gardening gloves.
âOh stop it, Iâm allowed to be a big sook.â
We all laugh and I canât believe how good it feels to be standing here with the two most important women in my life.
I honestly never thought theyâd be in the same room!
âRory!â Orion calls, running out of the orphanage and into my waiting arms.
âHey little man,â I say, kneeling and messing up his hair. âHow are the tomatoes coming?â
âTheyâre nearly ripe.â He beams. âIâve been watering them every day.â
âGood work! Hey Orion, this is my friend, Freya.â
She kneels beside me.
âItâs nice to meet you, Orion,â Freya says, offering her hand for him to shake. He stares at it for a moment, creasing his little forehead before returning the gesture.
âI used to hate humans,â he says, shaking hands a little too enthusiastically. âBut then I met Rory and now I think theyâre cool.â
âGood to know,â Freya responds, lifting a brow in my direction.
âOrion here is very progressive,â Mama says jokingly. âUnlike some people around here.â
EVERETT
âI canât believe weâre having this discussion again!â I say, slamming my fists on the conference table.
âAlpha, weâre only concerned about the packâs safety,â Samuels, one of my advisers, says. âBringing another human here is dangerous, andâ¦â
âWhat?â I demand. âSpit it out.â
âAnd itâs beginning to look like a pattern.â
I glance around at the faces of my council. Every one of them is a wolf I trust. They have served me greatly over the yearsâfighting by my side, helping me to lead.
Theyâve stood with me even when weâve disagreed.
But something feels different about this meeting.
âDo you all feel this way?â
I look from one to the next, trying to gauge how theyâre feeling.
Lucius glares at me before sighing and turning his attention to the table.
Ace is actively avoiding eye contact.
Samuels is resting on his elbows, calmly nodding.
Jasper, my oldest adviser, who was a friend of my fatherâs, is scratching his bearded chin.
âJasper, my father believed in coexistence. Isnât that right?â I ask him.
âYour father valued the sanctity of all life,â the old man says. âBut he believed in the safety of his pack above all else.â
âI thought we agreed this pack was going to be more open-minded when it came to humans.â
âOne human, yes!â Samuels says, sitting up straight. âBut now her friends are coming here on tours. Whatâs next? A gift shop?â
âRory trusts Freya,â I say. âShe is your luna.â
âIâd like to vouch for Aurora,â Ace says, finding a backbone. âShe is a clever woman. If she trusts Freya I do as well.â
âHow did she come to know about us?â Lucius asks calmly.
âWhat?â
âYou say you trust Rory, but if she let the secret of our existence slip, how trustworthy is she really?â
âLuciusâ¦â I stare at my beta in disbelief. Heâs never been Roryâs biggest fan, but to doubt her like this is unthinkable.
âI revealed myself to her,â I state plainly.
The council erupts into an outcry of voices, each trying to press a different point. None of them are happy.
âLet me explain,â I say, my voice rising over all the others. âFreya was going to die, I needed to shift to save her.â
The council goes quiet.
âSo thatâs it then,â Samuels says. âWe all just let it slide.â
âIt was life or death,â I say.
âItâs always life or death, Everett,â he shoots back. âBut if we go around saving every dying human, theyâll all know about us. Our secret will be destroyed. Theyâll come for us.â
âSheâs a teenage girl,â I say, locking eyes with Samuels. âIf our society canât hold itself up with one person knowing we exist then we arenât the wolves we think we are.â
His eyes stay locked on mine and for a moment neither of us blink.
Then Jasper speaks. âWell said, my boy. We do not need to worry about one human girl.â
I turn to Jasper and give him a nod of thanks.
âBut we must be discerning in the future,â he continues. âNo one else can learn about our society.â
âI give you my word as alpha.â I scan the room once more, making eye contact with each of my subjects. âI would never do anything to endanger this pack.â
RORY
As Freya and I wander back toward the packhouse, I canât stop thinking about our day together.
Ever since Freya found out the truth, sheâs not stopped asking questions.
Sheâs been so curious about wolves and how they liveâand about me and my powers: where they come from, who my real parents could be.
Even though Iâve had the most amazing day, thereâs a strange knot in my stomach. A tight guilty feeling that I canât shake.
âRory, your life here is so amazing,â she says, swinging her arms lazily at her sides. âI canât believe all of this stuff has been happening to you and we all had no clue.â
âItâs pretty wild.â
âI wish I could have been there for you.â
âI know,â I say, shooting her a smile. An idea pops into my head and I stop, clutching Freyaâs wrist.
âWhat?â she asks. âHave you spotted aâ¦aâ¦what did you call them? Rogues?â
âNo, Iâve had an idea,â I say. âI need to learn more about wolf culture and youâre so good at studying. Would you help me?â
âYou mean we get to read all the amazing books in your library? Hell yeah!â
Giddy with my newfound curiosity, I take Freyaâs hand and we enter through the main doors of the packhouse.
âOh hi, Rory,â Ace says, running down the stairs just as we step inside. âI was just in a meeting with Everett.â
He takes a step toward us and reaches out a hand to Freya. âYou must be Roryâs friââ
He stops talking. His mouth drops open as he takes Freya in.
âAce, stop ogling myââ
I turn and find Freya is doing the same thing.
Her face is turning rose-petal pink and she canât seem to look away from the wolf standing before her.
âGuys? Guys, whatâs going on?â
âWhoa,â Ace says and suddenly I realize whatâs happening.
~Are they mates?!~
