Chapter 23
30 Days till I Divorce My Husband (Estrella and Jason)
Chapter 23 At that moment, Jasonâs gaze was icy enough to cut glass.
âBro, I just ran my mouth off. Please donât exile me to the sticks again. Iâd never live it down.â Jasonâs smirk sent shivers down Bryceâs spine.
With a brittle grin, Bryce pleaded, âCome on, donât banish me. I will infiltrate Ellaâs camp for you and do some snooping to get her real thoughts.â
The mention of going undercover softened Jasonâs expression slightly.
Having promised to spy for Jason, Bryce sought out Estrella the next day. In the law firm, Estrella was sorting files alone, working overtime. Bryce pulled up a chair beside her.
Bryce had been shadowing her all morning, and Estrella scoffed, âSpit it out if you have something to say. Donât stick to me like gum. Iâve got work to do.â
Bryce leaned in, whispering, âEstrella, whatâs your real take on Jason? Whatâs your plan?â
Estrella replied dryly, âHe is the boss. What opinion or plan could I possibly have?â She knew Bryce had come for this very reason.
Bryce pressed, âCome on, donât be so evasive. Give me the straight dope, so Iâm prepared.â âWhy should you be prepared? Are we an item?â Estrella said, flipping through her case. files. âWhatever Jasonâs thinking, just tell me straight. No need for secrecy. I can handle it.â
Estrellaâs response fired Bryce up. Rolling up his sleeves, he fumed, âJason has crossed the line. Last night, I criticized him for his dealings with Serene, and how sending her home was wrong. He didnât appreciate it, didnât see his mistake and even glared at me. That look was like he wanted to flay me alive. Estrella, Iâll lay it on the line for you. Jason absolutely wants a divorce. If I canât persuade you today, and you donât agree to it, heâll make me pay.â
Before Estrella could respond, Bryce continued, âJasonâs no saint, so letâs just call it quits. Weâll make sure to get a hefty settlement from him. And donât pay any mind to those fortune-tellersâ words. Theyâre all charlatans. You have been kids ourselves for over twenty years. So you still think kids are that good? Worst comes to worst, Iâll be your son.â
Bryceâs offer met Estrellaâs indifferent glance, âNo thanks. I wouldnât take you as a son even if you paid me.â
Bryce, trying again, asked, âEstrella, whatâs your stance now? You still want to stick it out with Jason?â
Casually typing, Estrella answered without a ripple in her voice, âTell Jason if heâs got the 1/3 15:23 Chapter 23 divorce papers ready, Iâll sign whenever.â
Bryceâs eyeâs lit up, âThatâs the spirit, Ella. Men are a dime a dozen. Donât worry, Ella, Iâll make get the best deal from Jason.â
Sure you With Estrellaâs assurance to sign the papers, Bryce comforted her and left humming âa tune to report to Jason.
Facing Jasonâs desk, Bryce slouched back, legs crossed, boasting, âBro, Ella said if youâve got the divorce papers ready, sheâll sign anytime. Sheâs fed up with this sham, and if you want to be with that bimbo, sheâs all for letting you be.â
Behind the desk, Jason snapped his pen in half. âWhat else did Estrella say?â Jason asked.
Bryce cleared his throat, shifted his posture, and elaborated, âElla also said that you pushed her into becoming a twice-married woman for no good reason, so you owe her financially. The compensation has to be substantial. She wonât come near you, or mention your chapter in her life, to save you any discomfort.â
The more Bryce spoke, the heavier Jasonâs heart sank.
Bryce, lost in his own fabrications, thought he was achieving great feats. Jasonâs silent response to his storytelling prowess prompted Bryce to add, âEllaâs being more than fair. Youâve got the money, so be generous with the divorce. People will speak highly of your magnanimity, or else theyâll only remember your infidelity. Besides, your new fling doesnât hold a candle to my Ella.
Youâve got to make it worth Ellaâs while. Give her something to soothe her pride.â
Bryce kept referring to Ella as âhis,â while Jason just watched silently. Bryce seemed oddly enthusiastic about the impending divorce.
As Jason stared at him without saying a word, Bryce raised his eyebrows and asked, âDid I handle this issue right for you?
Youâve been trying to divorce for two years without success, but I sorted it out for you as soon as stepped in.â
âIndeed.â Jason replied with a grin, keeping his real emotions hidden.
Bryce added, âKeep in mind the compensation just mentioned to you. After all, youâve known Ella for so many years.â
âDefinitely.â Jason responded.
As Bryce met Jasonâs gaze, he sensed the mood was off. Jason wasnât elated about the successful separation.
Jason rhythmically tapped the desk, âBryce, you handle this well, and Iâm also pleased with your recent work ethic and results.â
Bryce, caught off-guard by the sudden shift to work matters, quickly said, âThanks, bro. Iâll keep at it.â
15:23 hapter 23 Jason then mentioned, âLately, the company decided to sponsor the construction of 50 primary schools in rural areas for free. I think you would make a great leader for this project.â
Bryce was stunned, âBro, I mean, Mr. Jason, I...
Jasonâs glance stopped him cold, âAny objections?â
With that look, Bryce felt a chill, shaking his head frantically, âNone whatsoever. How could I possibly object.â
âPack your bags. Youâre hitting the road with the crew at 3 p.m. today.â
âWhat? Today at 3 p.m.?â Bryce had thought heâd have at least a few more days to make some moves, to plead his case or wait for Jason to cool off. But there was no time given. Damn, that was ruthless. It was past noon already, and he barely had enough time to pack.
Jason observed Bryceâs despondent expression and added, âIn line with our companyâs philanthropic ethos, I want you to be fully involved in the construction of those 50 schools. Youâll come back when theyâre all built.â
âBro, is it because I asked for too much money? If thatâs the case, you can cut my pay, man. Iâll go talk to Estrella about it.â Bryce was on the verge of tears.
Fifty schools. Bryce was sure it would be the end of him.
