Chapter 145
The Remorseful Brothers
Chapter 145 Madeline met Wesleyâs serious gaze. She hesitated for a moment, feeling the pressure on her hand lighten. Still, she lifted the hem of his shirt. At that instance, her pupils couldnât help but dilate.
Wesleyâs physique was impressive. His chest muscles were wellâdefined, yet his waist was narrow.
His waist was toned, with prominent abs. His skin was fair and smooth, quite attractive. However, on this otherwise perfect body, there was a noticeable scar. A vicious wound stretched across his waist, like a centipede crawling over his bones.
Madelineâs face was filled with pity. She said, âWesley, did someone take one of your kidneys? Youâre usually so rational and careful. How did you let something like this happen to you? Iâve heard that losing a kidney is really bad for your health.â
Madeline was already considering how to help him get a kidney transplant.
Wesley pulled down his shirt without hesitation, his face calm. He said, âThereâs nothing wrong with my kidney. Donât question a man about his kidney, alright? Thatâs rude.â
âWhy is it rude? Without a kidney, the bodyâs detoxification ability declines, and metabolism suffers,â Madeline replied.
Wesley looked at her, realizing she wasnât joking. He wondered if he should remind her that kidneys might have other uses for men.
He sighed and said, âI was caught in an explosion, and a fragment lodged here. It was deep. When Nolan removed the foreign object, he had to perform surgery to clean the wound. It just hasnât fully healed yet. The injury was severe, and itâs not something that heals overnight.â
Wesley lowered his head, his hair covering his face. He stared intently at the fishing rod in his hands and continued, âThe only reason I have time now to deal with some of your troubles is because Iâm recovering from this injury. As for Winslet, Iâve sent someone to hunt her down.â
Madelineâs brow furrowed, and she said, âI donât want the Larson family dead. Taking their lives is easy, but making them watch me live better and better while their lives get worse and worse is much more satisfying than killing them outright.â
Wesley looked at Madeline and said, âAlright, Iâll do as you say.â
With that, he tugged at the fishing rod. The bait had already been nibbled away by small fish, but not a single one had been caught.
âLook at these clever little fish,â he remarked.
Madeline glanced at his fishing rod and asked, âWhat is there to catch here?â
âSince Iâm recovering, I canât go running around too much. If anyone spots me, itâd be dangerous.â Wesley chuckled. âMaddie, have you never hated someone so much that you wished they were dead?â
Madeline smiled and replied, âAt least, not anymore.â
The vacation was soon over.
Overnight, the entire Zook family disappeared as if they had evaporated from the world.
During class, when Harper saw Madeline arrive, she immediately waved at her with curiosity. The teacher had already arrived, so Harper held back for an entire class, eagerly speaking to Madeline as soon as the break came.
âMaddie, the whole Zook family is gone, and all their assets have been taken over by someone else,â Harper immediately said.
âJust a few days ago, they were so arrogant. Who couldâve guessed theyâd suddenly end up like this? Itâs really shocking.â
Madeline nodded and said, âI heard about it, too.â
âAre you sure you only heard about it?â
âWhat else?â Madeline glanced at her with a smile. âI wasnât close to them.â
Harper squinted and thought, âYou say you werenât close, but they still bowed and scraped in front of you. You think youâre being subtle, but I already see right through you!â
She smirked and said, âAnyway, my dad said itâs because Jasmine gambled too much at Spring Breeze Casino, which led to the Zook familyâs downfall. That Spring Breeze Casino is no joke. We should avoid that place for life.â
Madeline nodded and said, âDefinitely. Gambling is a terrible thing.â
In a vocational school, Winslet had been hiding for days. Seeing that Sharon hadnât taken her anger out on them, she cautiously returned to school.
She sat on a stool, unsettled, her mind filled with thoughts of calling Jasmine. But the only thing she said was never to provoke Madeline again.
1/2 MPPM Chapter 145 Winslet was bewildered. Before she could figure it out, she had completely lost contact with Jasmine.
Madelineâs backers were undeniably powerful, and now, having relied on a man, she had even become the CEO of Glorious Group. Getting revenge would be a piece of cake for her.
Winslet was terrified. If Madeline sought revenge, she would be done for.
While lost in her thoughts, someone poked her.
âWinslet, someone is looking for you,â the person said.
Winslet shuddered and turned toward the classroom door. A sternâlooking middleâaged man, about 40 years old and intimidating, stood there.
She was too scared to raise her head, her lips trembling as she said, âNo, you must have the wrong person. I donât know him.â
The man walked in. With every step closer, Winslet shivered more. Finally, he stopped in front of her, his sharp, clouded eyes locking onto her.
âMs. Larson, Iâm Alfred, the butler of the Larson family in the capital. Ms. Sharon Larson has invited you to lunch to discuss something important,â Alfred said.
Winslet refused almost automatically, âIâm not going!â
People nearby glanced over, whispering to each other.
âWinslet? Is she some kind of rich girl?â
âI donât know. We donât know her well. Sheâs always in a wheelchair.â
âShe must be a rich missy. Look, she even has a butler. Sheâs got to have connections.â
There were only a handful of rich people in the world. The old Winslet, who had once been ignored here, wouldâve been thrilled by the attention. But now, Alfred clearly wasnât here for a friendly visit.
Winslet was scared and asked, âAlfred, is Aunt Sharon... is she okay?â
âMs. Sharon Larson was severely injured in a car accident, so of course sheâs not okay. But she has some good news to share with you,â Alfred said, a mocking smile on his face.
After a thorough investigation, he had learned the truth. The one responsible for the accident that injured Sharon was none other than the real daughter of Thomas.
As for Winslet, she was just an imposter, pampered by the family, while the real daughter, Madeline, had been removed from the household. Their target was Madeline, who had no backing. As for Winslet, she still had her uses.
Alfred said, âSince you have trouble moving, Iâll push you.â
Winslet almost burst into tears. âGood news? No way this was anything good,â she thought.
But now, she was like a fish out of water, helpless to resist.
When they arrived at the hospital, Winslet almost jumped out of her wheelchair in fear at the sight of her aunt, Sharon, whose face was horribly disfigured.
She said, âAunt Sharon, please, I beg you, let me go. Iâve always respected you. Itâs all Madelineâs fault! Itâs that wretched Madeline who did this to you! If you want revenge, go after her! Itâs Madeline, that cursed girl, who made you like this!â
