Chapter 146
The Remorseful Brothers
Chapter 146 Sharon frowned. The disfigurement of her face alone had already been a devastating blow. Now, Winslet was acting terrified, making it seem like she was mocking her injuries even more.
She clenched her fists, wishing she could skin the timid Winslet right here and now.
âWinslet, I know youâre not truly part of the Larson family. This is something Thomas hid very well, so much so that even the Larson family in the capital doesnât know your real identity,â Sharon said.
Winslet stiffened all over and said, âI... I donât know...â
âStop pretending. You definitely know.â Sharon snorted coldly. âBut now, Iâm going to let you completely replace Madeline. Iâll get rid of her, and you will become the real and only daughter of the Larson family in Acocester. Are you willing?â
Confused, Winslet asked, âAunt Sharon, what do you mean? Can you explain it more clearly?â
Sharon glared at her and cursed her silently for being a fool. She said, âI mean, Iâll end Madeline, and you will undergo surgery to look like her and take her place!â
âAunt Sharon, I donât get it. Even if you wanted to kill Madeline, it would be easy for you. So why go through all this trouble of making me look like her?â Winslet asked.
Her main concern was that Winslet thought she was much prettier than Madeline. Otherwise, why else would Madelineâs fiancé be so obsessed with her?
Sharon was starting to lose her patience, but she said, âIâll tell you the truth. The youngest son of the Horton family, Nick, is engaged to the Larson family, and he hasnât shown interest in anyone else but Madeline. Nick is from the Horton family, and the Horton family is on equal footing with the Larson family. They are one of the top ten prestigious families.â
Sharon continued, âCompared to the capital, Acocester is worlds apart. The marriage has already been arranged by the elder of the family. They donât know about the affairs in Acocester. When the time comes, you will marry Nick in Madelineâs place, and Madeline will be considered dead under your name. This lie is unbreakable. Weâre in this together now, and no one will be able to expose you.â
After listening to Sharon, Winsletâs fear completely vanished. Compared to such great power, what was a little plastic surgery?
Still, Winslet gritted her teeth. If Nick had chosen her from the start, she wouldnât have to endure the pain of surgery.
âAunt Sharon, why did such a great opportunity end up falling to me?â she asked.
Sharon sneered. She didnât want to make things easy for them either. She hated the Larson family in Acocester.
But if she had to choose between Madeline and Winslet marrying Nick, she would rather it be Winslet. At least she was easy to control and not very smart. As a trophy wife, she would be good enough.
Sharon said, âAfter all, youâre obedient. Iâm not petty. I can tell the difference between you and Madeline. I wonât hold anything against you because of her. Iâve arranged the surgery. Tomorrow morning, someone will pick you up to go abroad. Do well and donât disappoint me.â
Winslet smiled and said, âThank you, Aunt Sharon.â
She knew that flattering Sharon had been worth it. See? Some good fortune finally came her way. Winslet always believed that opportunities come to those who were prepared, and hard work would never go unrewarded.
Winslet said, âI will continue to work hard.â
Sharon waved her hand and dismissed Winslet.
Then, her face darkened as she asked, âHow close will the resemblance be after surgery?â
Alfred replied hesitantly, âIn terms of appearance, at most seven out of ten. The rest will rely on training since their body shapes and temperaments are quite different. Luckily, Nick only briefly looked at the photos and chose randomly.â
âWhen the time comes, we can claim that her condition was affected by the accident or say the photos were retouched and donât quite match her real look. As long as she mimics Madelineâs cold demeanor, it should be enough,â he added.
Sharon frowned and said, âCold demeanor? Winslet acts like a puppy in front of rich men. Train her properly, or sheâll be sent back.â
Alfred replied, âYes, Ms. Larson.â
Night fell. Madeline looked at the script, already able to recite it by heart. She had read the adapted novel countless times, and every scene was ingrained in her memory.
1/2 Chapter 146 Gavin sat opposite to her, leaning on the table with his handsome face. In front of him was also a script, but he appeared emotionless. âChristy, you canât replace her,â he said.
Madeline was startled, her lips trembling slightly before tears fell. The tears, like pearls, gently rolled off her long lashes.
âSo, was your occasional kindness to me all because... I resemble her?â she asked.
Gavin crumpled the script in frustration. Then, he held Madelineâs face and said, âMaddie, stop crying. This ridiculous plot isnât worth your tears. Letâs stop acting. Donât cry,â he coaxed softly, rubbing her cheeks and patting her head.
Madeline sighed, pulling back her tears. âIâm just acting. Iâm not really crying. Geez, I just wanted you to help me run through the lines. Why are you like this?â
Madeline wiped the corners of her eyes with a tissue, mumbling, âDonât mix up the script with real life. I know how to separate the two.â
Gavin pursed his lips, frowning as he said, âI donât care. I just canât stand seeing you upset. Let me make this clear. When the show airs, Iâm not watching a single episode. And Iâll spend money on PR to make sure the internet is full of praise for you. I donât want to see a single bad review!â
Madeline burst into laughter. âYouâre so childish. Iâm an actress. I have to accept criticism. Iâm not money. I canât expect everyone to like me.â Gavin sighed, staring at the wrinkled script in confusion. He said, âSeriously, even if two people look alike, how could one become the otherâs standâin? This plot is so bad, itâs beyond terrible!â
Gavin criticized the script without hesitation.
Madeline smiled and replied, âBut think about it. If the person youâve been in love with disappeared for years, and you longed for them day and night, wouldnât you pay attention if someone who looked like them appeared? Itâs not about replacing them completely. Itâs about seeing that person in someone else.â
Gavin sneered and said, âI donât care. If it were me, Iâd never see anyone else as my Maddie. My love for you isnât about your looks. My eyes might be fooled, but my heart wonât be!â
He spoke solemnly. âAs long as my heart is alive, Iâll be able to tell the difference. In this world, you and anyone else are two entirely different, irreplaceable people.â
