Leanne glared at Curtis as he rummaged throu something heâd left behind.â
It was well past midnight, and Curtis seemed
poking around here and there
Leanne, struggling to keep her eyes open, coulint resist prodding him, âWhat on earth are you searching for?â
He shot back. âWhy do you care? Planning on keeping it for yourself?â
âOh come on,â she scoffed, âWhatever it is, itâs not worth more than this house.â
Curtis hummed lowly, âYouâd be surprised.â
Leanne, leaning against the cabinet door, pleaded, âIâm exhausted. Can you hurry up?â
âIf youâre tired, go to sleep. Iâve stayed here before. Itâs not like Iâll get lost,â Curtis replied nonchalantly as he pulled open a drawer and examined a pair of wooden combs heâd found inside.
They were exquisite rosewood, carved with intricate patterns, the wood exuding a subtle, rich fragrance.
âThose combs are pretty fancy. Whereâd they come from?â he asked.
Leanne glanced at them, âThey were a gift from Grandma for my wedding.â
Old wedding customs passed down through generations spoke of âcombing once for lifelong love, twice for harmonious aging together, thrice for a house full of children.â
âEver use them?â Curtis inquired.
Leanne, yawning with a nasal twang, admitted, âNever did.â
âNo wonder we got divorced, Curtis quipped, his eyes gleaming with mischief, âSee, itâs all your faultâ
Leanne rolled her eyes, âNutcase.â
She noticed, much to her surprise, he was actually still wearing his wedding band.
Through her drowsy haze, Leanne squinted at the ring for a few seconds before asking, âWhy havenât you taken off your wedding ring?â
Curtis paused, his voice casual as if the matter was of little importance, âWore it too long. Taking it off would leave a tan line.â
Leanne was speechless.

When Leanne woke the next morning, she found herself neatly tucked into her bed, the sunlight filtering through the curtains.
After a restless night interrupted by Curtisâ antes, she was still groggy as she sauntered downstairs after freshening up.
Laura had prepared breakfast, âI made your favorite soup.â
The sight of the lavish spread on the table, a stark contrast to her own makeshift meals lifted Leanneâs spirits a touch.
As she sipped her soup, the sound of footsteps descending the staircase caught her
attention.
Turning, she saw Curtis buttoning his cuffs, the picture of sophistication in a tailored white shirt and black trousers. His ensemble accented his broad shoulders and narrow waist, the exaggerated length of his legs..
A custom wristwatch casually adorned his wrist, its platinum face reflecting a cool, expensive sheen.
Freshly showered and dressed, Curtis looked invigorated, betraying no sign of the
late night search

Being shown the door first thing in the morning was irritating to say the least.
There was a pause before Curtis let out a sneer, âIn such a hurry to get rid of me, huh? Moving someone new in?â
âThatâs none of your business.â
âWho is it? Jeremy?â Curtisâ lips curled mockingly, âYou two seem to be moving fast. Weâve only been divorced for a few days, and youâre already joined at the hip, spending
Christmas together. Did you enjoy yourself?â
