Chapter 259
When Leanne got the invite, she didnât think twice before declining.

pass,
but Iâll have Selina drop off a gift for you.â
Growing up, Devin was Curtisâ shadow. Since Leanne lived under the same roof as Curtis, she ran into Devin more times than she could count. Yet, their relationship was anything
but warm.
Part of it was because she and Curtis werenât exactly close, and then there was Devin, who loved to mock at her bob haircut more than anyone else.
Being mocked by a boy two years her junior wasnât endearing, especially when she couldnât just smack him for it. No way was she going to like him.
She had only attended one of Devinâs birthday parties before and it left her with memories sheâd rather forget.
Her goal was to distance herself from Curtis, hoping theyâd be parallel lines, never meant to cross. So, engaging with his best buddy was the last thing on her list.
Considering she was even sending a gift through Selina showed her generosity.
Unfortunately, Devin was clueless about his standing in her heart, feeling slighted by her rejection. He went whining to Curtis.
âWhy bother with all the fuss if Leanne wonât show?â he lamented, oblivious to the heavier burdens Curtis was carrying.
At least Leanne would take his calls and agree to send a gift.
Meanwhile, Curtis was at Golden Grove Manors, under the magnolia tree, smoking.
Heâd sit there daily and gazed at the lit window, occasionally catching glimpses of Leanne taking out the trash, receiving packages, or hanging out with friends.
But luck wasnât always on his side.
After finishing his cigarette, Curtis finally said, I wonât be at your birthday.â
Devin was devastated. âIf you and Leanne donât show up, then whatâs even the point? We might as well call the whole thing off!â
âTell her I wonât be there, and she might show up.â
âAnd if she still doesnât?â
Curtis sighed. âSheâs got a soft spot. If you ask her nicely, sheâll come.â
Except for him, Leanne had a soft heart for everyone else, Devin thought. If only that were enough to not have Curtis sitting out in the cold.

No, he needed a foolproof plan!
âAre you chasing Joy?â Leanne was as stunned as if sheâd seen capitalism bow to socialism.
âExactly!â Devin was ready to sacrifice his dignity for Curtis. âPlease help me out.â
âWhy come to me if youâre after her?â
âSheâs loyal to you. If youâre holding a grudge, so is Joy. She probably feel like seeing me
as an enemy. Letâs bury the hatchet. Come to my party with her, please?â
Leanne was spinning her head. What on earth was this all about?
ââ¦Let me think about it.â
It was her day off, and Devin had told her the party was at seven, but had everyone else arrive by six. So, when Leanne arrived, everyone was already there.
Every single person from that birthday party three years ago, including Selina, was there, lined up by Mr. Perez to welcome her.
âWhy canât we wait inside?â someone grumbled.
Devin scowled. âToo proud to wait for Leanne? Be glad I didnât make you kneel.â
âTo outsiders, it seems like weâre waiting for the queen herself.â someone murmured.
Everyone was puzzled by Devinâs antics.
Then, a car pulled up. Devin, beaming like a doorman at a fancy hotel, hurried to open the door. âLeanneâ¦â
His smile froze.
âSuzan? What are you doing here?â
âWhy the attitude? Not thrilled to see me?â Suzan stepped forward, gift in hand. âDevi how come Iâm never on the guest list for your birthdays? Did you forget all about me?
Devin was at a loss. âIâm trying to set up Curtis and Leanne here. Didnât want you feeling
awkward.â
Suzan faltered her smile. âWhy so invested in their affair? Havenât they alreadyâ¦â
