Chapter 5

5. Fixed

Fractured Crowns

Happy BhaiDooj

Soon, the four girls came downstairs, each dressed in traditional outfits. They sat quietly beside each other, facing their future husbands.

The room was filled with relatives chatting casually, but there was an air of tension, as if everyone was carefully watching every move.

Suddenly, Ananya’s Chachi leaned over, placing a hand on her shoulder, and said in an overly sweet voice, “Our Ananya is such a decent girl, you know?” She gave a wide smile, looking around as if she had shared the most wonderful secret.

Amrita, who was taking a sip of water, almost choked, coughing to hide her laughter. Ishika and Divya tried to cover their smiles with their hands, but their eyes gave them away.

Ananya glared at Amrita for laughing but quickly put on a fake smile for the family.

Ishika, Divya, and Amrita struggled to hold back their laughter as Chachi and Chachu went on praising Ananya's "innocence" and "decency."

Everyone knew Ananya was anything but shy and quiet. Ishwar and Geeta chuckled at the scene, watching the girls trying not to burst out laughing.

The four brothers tried not to stare too obviously at their brides’ playful expressions.

Rudraksh pretended to be focused on his phone but couldn’t resist stealing glances at Ishika. He found her reactions entertaining and couldn’t help but notice how different she was from others.

Daksh looked at the four girls with respect, but his gaze kept shifting to Divya. There was something about her calmness that caught his eye.

Aditya, on the other hand, was trying hard not to look at Ananya, as if trying to convince himself he wasn’t interested. But even he noticed the sparkle in her eyes, something he couldn’t ignore.

Meanwhile, Aaryansh found himself staring at Amrita. He couldn’t look away, no matter how much he tried. Her strong, fearless attitude pulled him in, and he was more curious about her than he wanted to admit.

After some time, the elders confirmed the marriages.

Geeta spoke up, saying, “We’ll talk to the priest and let you know the wedding dates.” With that, the Raghuwanshis gathered their things, and the brothers followed their parents out.

The girls watched as the Raghuwanshi family’s cars drove away, each of them thinking about what lay ahead.

The girls exchanged silent looks. None of them said a word, but they all understood the weight of what was happening.

Divya, Amrita, and Ananya returned to their homes, each deep in thought. Ishika was the last to go, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety.

As Ishika headed towards her small room, her Chacha and Chachi stopped her in the hallway.

Her Chachi’s voice was cold as she warned, “If any one of you tries to refuse these marriages or causes trouble, you can forget about getting your mom’s company.”

Ishika nodded quietly, knowing arguing would only make things worse. She went to her room, a small space under the stairs that also served as a storeroom.

She sat on her bed, thinking about the pressure on her and her friends to go along with these marriages.

At Amrita’s house, her Mama had a similar talk with her. His eyes narrowed, and he warned, “Don’t try to embarrass us again in front of the Raghuwanshis. And don't dare to open your mouth again. You know what will happen if you don’t follow through.”

Amrita’s face stayed calm as she replied, “Just remember that I agreed to this marriage because you promised us ‘Moonlight.’ If you go back on your word, I promise to make sure you’ll regret it.” Her voice was steady, but her gaze was firm, making it clear she wouldn’t let them break their promise.

Her Mama and Mami exchanged nervous looks before going to their rooms. As they walked away, a small, satisfied smirk appeared on Amrita’s face.

She wouldn’t let anyone control her future. She had fought too hard to let anyone take away what was hers.

Back in their rooms, each girl thought about her own situation. Ananya sighed, knowing her relatives saw her as something to be “sold” rather than a person.

Ishika glanced around her cramped room, feeling the weight of the family’s demands.

Divya thought about Daksh and felt a strange curiosity about him that she couldn’t explain.

Amrita, on the other hand, felt even more determined to protect her and her sisters’ futures.

The four girls were bound together by more than just friendship—they shared a strength and a common goal. No matter what lay ahead, they silently promised to stand by each other and make the best of their lives.
