The Unwanted Marriage: Chapter 56
The Unwanted Marriage: Dion and Faye’s Story
I hold up my hand, and the meeting room falls silent as I stare at my phone. Thatâs the third time Lex has called me in the last fifteen minutes. Something must be wrong.
âI need to take this. Letâs reconvene in fifteen.â
My executives nod, and they slowly begin to leave the room as I pick up the phone. âWhatâs going on, Lex?â
âDid you see the news?â he asks, his tone frantic.
I frown and shake my head. âNothing flagged as particularly interesting today,â I say carefully.
âNot the real news, dumbass. The gossip papers.â
âWhy donât you enlighten me,â I tell him, my tone harsh. âSince you felt the need to interrupt an important board meeting over some bullshit gossip.â
âCeleste got engaged. To Clifton Emerson.â
âFuck.â
Lex sighs. âYeah. I havenât been able to reach Zane, but Iâm tracking his phone as we speak.â
I rise from my seat. âOkay, Iâm leaving the office now. Impromptu poker night, Iâm guessing?â
âThatâs what I was thinking. Heâll be a wreck. Zane nearly lost it when she reappeared out of nowhere. When they broke up, he warned her not to appear in front of him ever again, and now she isnât just back, sheâs marrying his biggest business rival? What the fuck?â
âSheâs playing with fire,â I murmur as I head to my private elevator. âWhat are we going to do?â
âIâm not sure. Despite Zaneâs threats, he doesnât want any of us to touch her. I donât know, man. Maybe heâs over her now. Itâs about time he lets her go. If sheâs engaged⦠well, I guess heâs got no choice.â
I shake my head as I step into my car. âNah,â I murmur. âWe both know it wonât be that simple. He begged Grandma to let him marry her right before he broke up with her. He really loved her. Thereâs no way heâll stand back and let this happen.â
âFound him,â Lex says, his tone conveying his relief. âXave will pick him up. Ares and Luca are already on their way to mine. Zane isnât going to want to talk about this, but we need to do something. If we leave him be, heâll end up doing something he regrets.â
âAgreed,â I murmur, at a loss. âDid you ever find out the full story?â
Lex hesitates. âNo. Iâve been tempted to, but it feels too invasive. I figured heâd tell us when heâs ready. You?â
I sigh. âNo. Same.â
Lex meets me outside his house, and I end the call moments before getting out of the car. Ares and Luca pull up behind me moments later, their expressions just as worried as mine.
âHow do you think heâll handle this? Sarcasm or anger?â Luca asks.
Ares and I both chuckle. âSarcasm,â we say, just as Lex says, âanger.â
âYouâre on,â I murmur.
Lex smirks. âIf I win, weâre calling my latest invention the Lex-board.â
I groan, unsure if thatâs a price Iâm willing to pay. Itâs far too embarrassing. âDeal,â I mutter reluctantly. âBut if I win, I never want to hear that name again.â
His arguments die down when Xavier parks next to me, a reluctant Zane in his passenger seat.
âWhat the fuck is this supposed to be?â Zane says, a fake smile on his face. âA fucking intervention?â
His gaze settles on Ares, and he points at him. âYou had a fucking breakdown when you first found out Raven was seeing Silas, even though you were engaged to her sister.â He turns to Luca next and raises his brow. âAnd you. You were in near fucking tears when Val quit her job and went on a date with someone else. You lost your goddamn mind.â He looks at me then, and I tense. âDonât even get me started on you, Dion. You threw your wifeâs fucking phone in the goddamn ocean because she spoke to her ex, and you werenât even married yet. I donât want any input from any of you fucking idiots.â
I glance at Lex, and he shrugs. A combination of both? It isnât really anger, and it isnât really sarcasm either. Itâs deflection.
âI mean,â Xavier says, holding up his hand. âLex and Iââ
âShut up,â Zane cuts him off. âI donât even know why youâre here, honestly. How exactly did you worm your way into Windsor poker nights? And why? Am I really supposed to believe youâre here for our sparkling personalities? I get that youâre Dionâs friend, but why are you always here, even when he isnât?â
Xavier tenses and crosses his arms, a challenging look in his eyes. âExcuse me,â he says, clearly trying to suppress the hint of danger that usually radiates around him. âI thought we were besties. Are you telling me you donât feel this thing between us?â
I bite back a smile, and Lex laughs, breaking the tension. âOkay, fine. No questions, alright? Letâs just play poker and get drunk,â he says.
Zane grunts noncommittally and follows Lex into the house. Iâll settle for that. Zane is unpredictable at the best of times, and Iâm not sure he should be left alone today. For both his and Celesteâs sakes.
He doesnât say a word throughout the first few rounds, but he continues to drink everything we put in front of him. âYou still love her, huh?â I murmur eventually. Itâs obvious that he wants to take the edge off the pain, or better yet, forget entirely. Iâve been in his shoes, though the circumstances werenât quite the same. Iâve been running from pain for years.
He looks up sharply and clenches his jaws. âNo,â he denies. âI fucking hate her with all Iâve got. I warned her Iâd destroy her if I ever laid eyes on her again, so if she has half a brain, sheâll stay far away from me.â
Ares shakes his head. âThatâs impossible. Emerson moves in the same circles as us. Thereâs no escaping her. Youâll run into her eventually.â
Zane nods slowly, a twisted smile making its way onto his lips. âShe knows exactly what sheâs doing. She wants to marry that piece of trash? Let her. Iâll make the day she takes his name one to remember. I warned her, and sheâs choosing to defy me. Iâm going to tear her apart, piece by piece, until sheâs begging me for mercy. Not even Clifton Emerson can save her.â
The room falls silent, and I reach for my whiskey glass. What the fuck did Celeste do to him? He hasnât been the same since they broke up, and this darkness? Fuck. Iâm worried itâll consume them both.
