The Play: Epilogue
The Play (Briar U Book 3)
Itâs eleven p.m. on Sunday and weâre on Hunterâs couch watching my favorite show. Tonightâs episode: Magicians Who Kill. Summer is fast asleep on the other end of the couch from us. Brennaâs curled up in one armchair, watching the screen in fascination, while Fitz takes up residence in the other armchair, still on the fence about the episode. Weâre only ten minutes in and heâs already said the words âthis is fucked upâ half a dozen times.
âSwear to God, if her severed head appears in his magicianâs hat, Iâm getting up and leaving,â Fitz warns.
Hunter leans forward when his phone buzzes on the coffee table. âHey, itâs Hollis.â
âAnswer it,â Brenna orders. âFind out when theyâre coming home.â
âBut itâs a FaceTime call,â Hunter complains.
âSo? What, you need to touch up your makeup?â she mocks.
I giggle.
âWhatever.â He presses a button, and a moment later an explosion of noise rocks the living room.
âAHHHHHHHH! YOU GUYS!â
Summer shoots up into a sitting position, wide awake in a heartbeat. âWhat the fuck? Whatâs wrong?â she demands, rubbing her eyes in alarm.
âGuys! Can you hear us?!â Itâs Rupi, shrill and worried. âMike! I donât know if they can hear us!â
âThey can hear us, babe!â
âWe can hear you!â Hunter says in exasperation. âWhat the hell? Where are you? Why is it so bright?â
I peer at his phone, but I canât figure out where they are either. Itâs daylight, thatâs for sure. What time zone are they in?
Brenna hops up and settles on the arm of the sofa to get a better look, while Summer peeks over my shoulder. Fitz doesnât leave his chair, although I can tell his interest is focused solidly on the conversation.
âWeâre in Nepal,â Hollis reveals.
We all freeze.
âWhat do you mean, youâre in Nepal?â Brenna demands.
âI mean weâre in Nepal. Dude, weâre staying in the coolest place ever! Itâs like on top of a mountain and thereâs a Buddhist monastery right there, and, oh, Davenport! Thereâs actual monks here, and these dudes donât have sex at all! A lot of them took a vow of silence, so I canât really get any deets for you, butââ
âHollis,â Summer interrupts. âWhy are you guys in Nepal?â
Rupi re-enters the frame, her perfect white teeth sparkling in the sunshine of the Nepalese mountains, or wherever the heck they are.
âWeâre on our honeymoon!â she shrieks.
Summer gasps. The rest of us gawk at the phone.
âIs this a joke?â Brenna asks, her dark eyes narrowing.
âNope!â Hollis replies. His and Rupiâs faces fill up the whole screen, and I canât deny Iâve never seen two people look happier. âWe got married on Friday! Iâm sorry, I know you guys wouldâve wanted to come. And FitzâI know, I know, youâve always dreamed of being my best manââ
âAlways,â Fitz says dryly.
âIâm sorry, man, Iâll make it up to you. Weâre having a real wedding this summer. Itâs in India, and youâre all invited.â
âWhat is happening?â Summer sounds utterly baffled.
âYou seriously got married?â Hunter asks incredulously.
âYeah, we did it in a courthouse in Boston. Our witness was a dude trying to get out of a traffic ticket.â
I tamp down a laugh.
âAnd now youâre on your honeymoon in Nepal,â Brenna says, each word coming out slowly and lined with bewilderment. âBut youâre having an official wedding this summer. In India.â
âYes!â Rupi say proudly. âIsnât this amazing?â
Nobody answers.
The brief silence summons a shriek from her throat. âAre none of you going to say congratulations?â she demands, her eyes on fire.
That snaps us into action, and soon weâre all blurting out our congratulations.
âWeâre so happy for you! I promise!â Summer assures them, and thereâs nothing insincere about it. âWeâre just stunned. We didnât expect you to elope.â
âThatâs why people elope, because nobody expects it!â Rupi chirps happily.
âSo how long are you in Nepal?â Fitz calls toward the phone. âWhen are you home?â
âWeâll be back in a year,â Hollis says.
âA year?â Summer echoes in amazement. âButâ¦â
âWhat about your job?â Hunter asks Hollis.
âRupi, what about school?â I pipe up.
âI quit.â Hollis.
âI dropped out.â Rupi.
I gape at both of them.
âI havenât even picked a major,â Rupi says, waving an indifferent hand. âI donât care about college.â
âAnd I donât care about my job,â Hollis chimes in. âDavenport said we should travel, so thatâs what weâre doing.â
I glance at Hunter as if to say what the fuck?
âI advised him to take Rupi on a weekend getaway or a summer trip,â Hunter retorts. âNot to elope and run off to India!â
âNepal,â Hollis corrects. âJeez, pay attention, dude.â
âWell.â Summer clears her throat. âWeâre all thrilled for you. I canât believe youâre married.â
I canât either, but Rupi and Hollis seem over the moon about it, and who am I to judge?
âOkay, you guys, itâs like eight in the morning here and we have a big day planned,â Rupi announces in her shrill, bossy voice.
âWeâll call back in a few days,â Hollis assures us. âOr a month. Whatever. Love you guys! Be back in a year!â
The call disconnects.
And we all exchange mystified looks.
âShe dropped out of college,â Brenna says, sounding impressed
âThey got married,â Fitz says, sounding horrified.
âSheâs only nineteen,â I realize.
âYeah, but in Rupiâs defense, she knew she was going to marry Michael Hollis the second she met him,â Summer points out.
âTrue,â Brenna agrees.
âTheyâll either be divorced in a week, or theyâll be together forever,â Hunter predicts with a sigh. âThereâs no in between with those two.â
Summer tucks her golden hair behind her ears. âIâm happy for them, I really am. But holy shit, that came out of left field.â
Hunter shakes his head a few times, as if trying to come out of a daze. âOkay, then. That wasâ¦fascinating.â He picks up the remote control. âShould we keep watching? We were about to find out if the dismembered head winds up in the magic guyâs hat.â
âIâm going upstairs to play Fortnite,â Fitz grumbles.
âIâm going to sleep,â Summer says.
Brenna stands up. âIâm going to see if Jakeâs still awake so I can tell him about this latest development.â
âParty poopers,â I accuse.
As Hunterâs roommates scatter and disappear, he tugs me closer to his warm, muscular body. âWhat do you say, babe? Shall we?â
I slant my head and grin up at him. âYup yup.â
