Chapter 130
Revenge is Best Served After Reborn (James)
Sophie instantly noticed the black suit Nichole was wearing, adorned with the Burke family crest on the chest. It was James' jacket.
âMs. Sophie, Ms. Jenna...â Nichole greeted them with a smile. âWhat a coincidence.â
Jenna looked even worse than Sophie, especially after learning that James had hurt Sophie because of Nichole. Without a second thought, Jenna slapped Nichole right across the face.
Sophie couldnât hold Jenna back in time, whose gaze turned icy.
Nicholeâs eyes reddened instantly, tears welling up. âMs. Jenna, what did I do? Why did you hit me?â
Nichole's tearful plea drew attention from students heading to their morning classes at Eastwood College, who only dared to watch from a distance.
Nichole was somewhat of a celebrity at Eastwood College, known not only for her outstanding achievements and good looks but also for her generally positive and kind image.
Most students had heard of Nicholeâs good deeds. The boys, in particular, were protective of her.
âYou ask why I hit you?â Jenna scoffed. âYou spread rumors that Sophie is a gold-digger and slandered her on the school bulletin board! How can you be so shameless? Why are you clinging to someone else's husband?â
Nichole's tears streamed down her face. She looked like the whole world had misunderstood her. âMs. Jenna, how can you insult me in front of all these people? I may be poor, but I have my dignity! I never did those things!â
Nichole's defiant expression continued, âYou can't just slander me because Sophie is your close friend! I may be poor, but I won't let you tarnish my reputation! Even if you are wealthy, you can't just throw dirt on me like this!â
Jenna was angry but momentarily lost for words in the face of such moral coercion.
Sophie stepped in front of Jenna, amused by Nichole's act. âYou are oor?â
Nichole still had that pitiful yet stubborn look as she faced Sophie.
Sophie had always just returned tit for tat with Nichole, never going too far or intending to make Nicholeâs life at school unbearable.
But Nicholeâs recent behavior had changed Sophieâs mind. She really shouldnât have considered Nichole's dignity.
Sophie advanced, and Nichole, frightened, stepped back. âWhat are you going to do?!â
Sophie swiftly grabbed the bag from Nicholeâs hands, pulling out one bank card after another. She also took the suit jacket draped over Nicholeâs shoulders.
âAll these bank cards, and not one of them wasnât given to you by James. He gives you thousands every month for living expenses, covers your hefty tuition fees, bought you that bag, and pays for your daily essentials. Donât forget, James and I are marriedâhis money is our joint property. What right do you have to claim poverty? Where do you get the audacity to say you have integrity?â
Nichole looked mortified.
âThis jacket belongs to James, right?â Sophie said coldly. âMy husband is really thoughtful, funding your education, personally bringing you to school, and making sure youâre covered up, just so you wonât catch a cold.â
With those words, everyone around understood what was happening. A married man caring so deeply for another woman was a clear sign of an inappropriate relationship.
âNever thought Nichole was like that...â
âI thought she really had integrity, but it turns out sheâs just a home-wrecker.â
âSheâs living off a man and still dares to criticize the rightful wife!â
âItâs clear now that she must be jealous. She spread those rumors on the bulletin board. How evil!â
At the surrounding whispers, Nichole's face turned from pale to flushed.
Suddenly, a hand snatched the jacket from Sophieâs grasp.
Sophie was startled to see James draping the jacket over Nichole, his expression towards Sophie cold. âIâve said before, Iâve never crossed the line with Nichole.â
âCrossed the line? What counts as crossing the line?â
Sophie chuckled lightly and said, âYou take Nichole to all the major evening events, rush to her side the moment sheâs sick, and repeatedly embarrass me, your wife, in public for her sake.â
With each word, Jamesâ face grew more uncomfortable.
Sophie stepped closer, looking directly into Jamesâ eyes, each word deliberate. âJames, itâs not just sleeping together that crosses the line. What youâre doing now is even more disgusting.â
