With a sharp crack, Joseph lost his cool and slapped Sophie across the face. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth. Sophie shot Joseph a cold glare, and for a moment, Joseph was taken aback, seeing Ruby’s disdain and chill in her eyes.

“You’re spouting nonsense, just nonsense! What do you know? You’re just making it all up!” Joseph shouted, stepping back.

“If it’s nonsense, Mr. James, why don’t you just check online?” Sophie replied coolly. “In Devonport, everyone knows the tale of the former head of Burke International and his wife, Ruby. A top actress who left the spotlight for her family—how did she spend those years in the mansion? No makeup, doing laundry and cooking, just a numb housewife, like a puppet, not even allowed to dance.”

Sophie eyed Joseph with a bit of mockery, “Are you going to pin all this on Bea too? A man who lets his mother treat his wife like that and does nothing—well, he’s hardly a man. “You!” Joseph yelled, raising his hand again, but just then, the door slammed open.

James stepped in, grabbing Joseph’s hand, his voice cold, “Her wounds haven’t healed yet.”

Seeing his son standing up for Sophie, Joseph’s anger quickly subsided. Years ago, he had protected Rose the same way. But no matter what he did, she never smiled at him again.

Joseph lowered his hand, his demeanor turning icy. “James, I’ve given her a day to rest, but that doesn’t mean she can push my limits.” James didn’t say a word, just stood in front of Sophie.

“Talk some sense into her. If she reveals the treasure’s location, I’ll let her go.” With that, Joseph left the room.

Once Joseph was gone, James turned to check on Sophie’s injuries. As he reached for her cheek, Sophie instinctively pulled away, turning her head lightly, leaving his hand hanging awkwardly in the air.

“Don’t waste your time. You won’t get the treasure’s location out of me,” she said flatly.

“I know,” James replied, his voice low.
