Chapter 140
Revenge is Best Served After Reborn (James)
Sophie struggled to pull the phone out of James' pocket, barely maintaining consciousness as she dialed 911. Moments later, she passed out.
The next day, Sophie slowly opened her eyes to find Colt bustling around her. Her voice was hoarse and weak, "Where's James?"
At the sound of Sophieâs voice, a trace of joy crossed Colt's face as he quickly responded, âMaâam, are you asking for some water?â
Sophie shook her head, "Where is James?"
"Mr. Burke..." Colt looked troubled, "Mr. Burke is seriously injured and currently in the ICU."
Hearing this, Sophie struggled to sit up, but Colt quickly pressed down on her arm, "Maâam! The doctor said you also have serious injuries. You canât get up right now."
Sophie lacked the strength to speak. James had been injured trying to save her. She couldnât rest easy without seeing James with her own eyes.
âMaâam.â
As Colt tried to stop her, a commotion suddenly erupted outside the door.
"Where is Sophie? How is she?!"
Sophie recognized Perry's voice. Colt stepped out to check and indeed, it was Perry and Jessica arriving. Jessica looked around, seemingly searching for Sophie.
"Yeah, how is Sophie?"
Jessica was anxious. Sophie, watching from inside through the window, knew exactly what was on her mind.
Jessica wondered if Sophie had died. Sophie thought back to how the brakes had suddenly failed, a shadow crossing her eyes.
The car had been fine when it arrived at the Russell estate.
Colt spoke from outside the room, "Iâm sorry, she is currently resting."
"Let them in," Sophie said calmly, noticing a flicker of disappointment in Jessicaâs eyes outside the room.
Sophie was alive, much to Jessicaâs dismay.
Perry hurried in, taking in Sophieâs bruised body and bandaged forehead. "What exactly happened? How did you end up like this?"
"It seems someone tampered with my brakes. They failed," Sophie revealed.
Shock and confusion spread across Perryâs face.
Sophie watched Jessicaâs expression but couldnât discern any guilt. Was it not Jessica after all?
But if not Jessica, then who?
Perry glanced at Jessica and said, âYou should step outside.â
Jessica, stunned, asked, âHoney, are you asking me to leave? You suspect me?â
Perry took a deep breath and remained silent.
Jessica then placed her hands on her hips, âPerry! Iâve been in your family for years. I am not perfect, but I gave it my all. Now you are treating me like I am some sort of a criminal?â
Perry didnât speak harshly in front of Jessica, but she glared at him and shouted, âYou suspect me? Fine, bring the evidence! Bring the evidence, and Iâll go to the police station to turn myself in.â
âNobody said it was you. Sophie is still resting. Please step outside!â
âYou!â
âOut.â
Perry was firm, and Jessica, out of consideration for Sophieâs presence, stamped her foot and stormed out of the room.
Sophie observed that Jessicaâs reaction didnât seem feigned. If Jessica really did it, she wouldnât have been so bold just now.
âSophie, I know you suspect Jessica did it, but I can assure you, it wasnât her,â Perry said.
âI know,â Sophie replied. âAlthough Jessica often speaks unpleasantly, she wouldnât do such a thing.â
At least not now.
Sophie left the latter unsaid, and Perry nodded, adding, âSheâs just a bit harsh. Iâll check the surveillance at home when I get back and get you a result.â
