Secret Desire: it begins
Secret Desire
Secret Desire
Author: Krystal Werner
Here I am, walking behind some slow lady and her daughter in the grocery store. I sigh. I cant seem to get around them. I run my fingers through my thick, black wavy hair in frustration. As I walk by the deli section of the store I see a man in the corner of my eye. He's an older gentleman wearing a long body length black trench coat. His hair is a silver color. He looks to be in his early 40's with tired blue eyes, bushy silver eyebrows and thin lips. Our eyes lock. He stares at me emotion and motionless. Yes, my eyes are abnormally bright, gem-like green but did every person that saw my eyes have to stare at me like that?!
I try my best to ignore him but suddenly I can't help but noticing his pale skin, paler then even my almost translucent skin, and how bright red his lips are. He has the confidence of a 20 year old. I uncomfortably brush past him as he continues to stare unblinkingly at me. When I get past him I glance over my shoulder, seeing his gaze still on me. A shutter runs across my body.
I got out of the store as quickly as I could after the run in with that creepy guy but it didn't take long for me to completely forget about the incident. The sun is long gone as I drive down highway 34, heading home. The radio is on but i'm not paying much attention to it. Nearly 15 minutes away from home is when it happeneds, I hear a loud thud on the top of my car, making me jump and scream, slamming on my breaks. Luckily there aren't any cars behind me on the highway.
As my mind tries to process what the hell just happened I freeze, my hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. In front of me are two figures standing in front of my car. Before I can even have a chance to blink something, or someone jumped from the roof on my car, onto my hood and then onto the ground right in front of my car.
Sunconsciously my eyes went to my rear view mirror, seeing 5 more figures standing behind my car. My heart lurches into my throat and my stomach twists into a knot. What is going on?! I felt myself begin to panic. This was extremely creepy! They were all wearing hooded black trench coats, like the creepy guy in the grocery store.
Two of them came over to either side of my car. One of them reached for my car door. Without a second thought I stepped on the gas. But somehow I didn't hit any of them! It's like they all just dissappeared into thin air! It must have just been my imagination. I did have quit an imagination, ever since I was a kid. Of course I would imagine something like that. I shook my head at myself.
Very abruptly, all four of my doors flew open. As the figures piled in, I was yanked out of the car. The figure held me outside of the still speeding car as I started screaming, terrified of being thrown out of my own vehicle. As the thought of my body hitting pavement and my bones being crushed I was pulled back into the car and carelessly thrown into the back seat, landing on top of hard legs.
âWhat the hell is going on?!â I finally brought myself to shout, struggling to get away from the figures. The only response I got was amused laughter as all the doors simultaneously slammed shut. The man driving made a pyschotic U-turn on the highway and sped off in the other direction.
Tears sprang to my eyes as confusion set in. I looked up at the closest figure to me. Unlike the others I could see him, because I was directly under him and his hood failed at covering his face from this angle. He looked back down at me.
His skin was pale, his lips red, his eyes black, his hair was a white-blonde and his body was hard. All of there bodies were, and cold. He smiled at me in a snarling, fang-bearing way. The second I realized he had fangs my whole body freaked out in such a way that I must have passed out, because the next thing I knew everything went black. But that face still stuck in my head.
I woke up in a bed, in a dark room and I had no idea where I was. The last thing I remembered, I was simply just shopping at the grocery store and then I was randomly being attacked by strange figures. I sat up, looking around frantically, trying to force my eyes to adjust. Before they could I heard a clicking noise and very suddenly a dim light was turned on. Near the light I saw two hooded figures. I shrank away from them, remembering the man's face from before. Before I got the courage one of them did first. The hood went over there eyes and nose, I could only see both of there mouths.
âOur master will see you now.â His voice was harsh, rough and seemed angry. Without realizing it I whimpered, moving closer to the wall behind me. He growled. âYou deaf?!â He snapped.
âJared, calm yourself.â The other guy grabbed his arm. His voice was nicer sounding, but also strong. It wasn't intimidating at all, not compared to the guy he called Jared. It was a very distinct voice. Silky, soothing and in control. His voice actually had a calming effect on me. Jared turned toward him, his lips curled into a snarl. âEnough.â He sternly said through clenched teeth.
Jared ripped away from his grip, turned to me as if wanting to say something else to me, but spun around and dissappeared into the darkness. The other guy turned to me now.
âIt wouldn't be wise of you to get on anyone's bad side here. They can be very impatient...â
I swallowed, nodding and climbing out of the bed, walking over to him. I didn't say anything even though I had a feeling I should thank him. I turned to him to do just that, he pushed my shoulder gently, making me face away from him. We went out the way Jared had just disappeared through. I realized now that it was a hallway, which was very narrow.
Ahead of me I heard heavy footsteps. I couldn't escape that way and I couldn't turn back because the guy followed close behind me. There was nowhere to go. We went forward for the longest time. Eventually the hallway began to wind and then completely turned. We were going forward again.
âWatch your head.â The guys voice mumbled behind me. I got as low as I could while still walking. A moment passed before he said anything else.
âOK.â Was all he muttered, quietly. I was walking normally again. It was so dark it was hard to tell where I was going.
Then as quickly as the attacked my car we came into another dimly lit room. Though the light was actually much brighter in here then it was in the room we just came from. It took me a second to realize the room was full of the figures in the hooded trench coats. I instantly began to tremble. This was insanity. How could this be happening to me?
That Jared guy had been walking ahead of us, went and joined the group of hooded figures. The guy behind me seemed to reluctantly take my arm and led me to the other side of the room where we only came to meet more darkness. We walked through another hallway.
I heard footsteps begin to follow behind us and fought the urge to glance back, considering I couldn't see in the first place. And then, only moments later, I hit the end of the hall with a loud smack and let out a groan. Dead end?
âWatch where you're goingâ The guy said in my ear.
âI can't!â I hissed suddenly, annoyed. I had spoken quietly but my voice echoed loudly. There was instanly murmuring and low growling behind us.
A clicking noise caught my attention. Now I was staring into another dimly lit room. We went in. It was a big, empty room but standing in the middle were even more hooded figures. We stopped a few feet away from them. The others stood behind us. The guy let go of my arm now, taking a step back. I tried following but he only pushed me forward and away from him.
As he did, one of the hooded figures stepped forward. Again I could only see his mouth. He seemed to be smiling.
âShe seems to have taken a liking to you, Kale.â I finally knew his name. This guy's voice was husky and sounded kind of mean, like Jared. Kale let out a noise behind me. It was kind of grunt, sounding disgusted. I frowned hearing his reaction.
âI hope they didn't treat you too poorly, you are my guest afterall...â He pulled back his hood. I gasped instantly seeing his face. I wasn't the only one, the whole room seemed to gasp too. Though I wasn't sure why.
âDante!â A few of them breathed surprised.
âWhat do you want?!â I was trying to keep myself from shaking, to keep my voice even but it didn't work. I was too terrified.
Before I could get an answer one of them stepped forward and whacked me across the face, so hard that the strength of it made me hit the ground. I felt warm liquid drip down my chin and I knew my lip was bleeding. I swear, even with the humming in my ears from the after effect of the hit I heard what sounded like soft âMMMM'sâ and moans coming from around the room.
I let out another groan, digging my fingers into the ground, trying to keep myself from crying out. There was growling above me and my ears caught the arguing.
âDon't do it again!â It was Kale's voice. He bent down, holding out his hand for me to take. When I didn't, he grabbed my arms and pulled me to my feet, steadying me as my head still spun.
âWhy are you so protective of the human?!â One of them hissed.
Human, the way he said it strangely fascinated me.
âYou heard Dante, she's his guest!â Kale snapped, momentarily making sure I could keep my balance before he took a step away from me.
âEnough! There will be no fighting here!â Dante spoke up quickly, growling in a stern voice. âNow out with you all!â He demanded. âNot you, Kale.â He added quickly.
Kale stopped, staying as was asked of him. They stood silently until the very last one was out and the wall or door or whatever it was, was shut.
âShe's taken a liking to you, Kale.â Dante repeated.
Kale, who was now standing slightly in front of me and to the side, glanced at me. Or at least he moved his head quickly in my direction then back at Dante. He didn't say anything but his lips turned down into a frown.
âI expect you'll take good care of her...â
âDante!â He responded suddenly in surprise.
âYou know how the others can get.â Dante said, keeping his voice level.
âYeah, but Dante--â
âJust for a little while, Kale. At least until I finish the preperations.â He interupted his protest.
âThat will take well over--â
Dante interupted him again. âI know. You will protect her. End of discussion.â He sounded like he was losing his patients. He through his hood back up.
âYou're the only one I can trust, Kale.â He came over to us and took my hand. I began to shake at his touch. He sighed. âNo one's going to hurt you.â He assured quietly. âDo you understand?â He waited for my response.
âYes.â I said but didn't believe him. And the fact that he asked if I understood was kind of funny considering the truth was I really didn't, at least when it came to understanding why I was even here in the first place. Was I supposed to just understand why I was randomly kiddnapped?
âGood girl. Now, what's your name, love?â He asked gripping my hand tighter when I tried to pull away.
âJ-Jamie.â I stammered.
He smiled. He was close enough now that I could see those fangs that I saw on the man moments before I passed out. I was trembling again. He let go of my hand.
âPretty.â He looked at Kale, well turned to him, so as far as I was conserned he looked at him. âJamie. Remember that name.â
âJamie...â Kale mumbled to himself, then nodded. âFine.â He muttered now, sounding defeated.
Dante seemed satisfied as he nodded spinning around on his heels and disappearing into even more darkness. I was still trembling when Kale grabbed both of my hands with his. My body lurched in surprise.
âYou need to learn to relax. Fear is like a drug to us...to them.â He changed his sentence at the last second. âThey can sense it from miles away.â
I looked up at him. If the light was brighter I would be able to see his face but all I saw was his mouth and a thick black shadow covering the rest. He turned away as I tried to search for any light in that hood.
âLet's get you something put in your stomach.â He muttered, letting go of my hands. He turned to me again and lifted his hand to my chin where the blood was just starting to dry. I flinched. He pulled away before touching me, the cut or the blood. âWe should get that cleaned up too.â He continued to mutter.
I nodded in agreement. I followed him out into the darkness once again. I heard mumbling as we got closer to the room we were in earlier. I instinctively grabbed Kale's arm. He tensed. We turned a sharp corner and he shrugged my hand away.
âSorry...â I breathed.
He murmered something I didn't quit catch. I got the feeling he did that a lot. He led me into an empty , dim lit kitchen. He gestured to a stool in front of the marble counter as he sifted through the cupboards. His jaw looked tense.
âWe don't use the kitchen much.â He laughed suddenly, shutting the last cupboard and turned to me. â At all, really.â
With all these what I assumed to be men, how could they not use the kitchen? Didn't men eat constantly? By this time I was feeling a little more comfortable, especially seeing his smile. I stood.
âWhat are you looking for?â I asked quieter then I expected.
He slid a box of mac and cheese down the counter toward me. I didn't notice he had pulled that out. I guess I was too busy looking around. It was a nice kitchen with marble counters that went around like a bar. The stools and cupboards were black, the utilities, microwave, fridge, oven, etc, were silver.
âA...pot...?â He said a little unsure. I covered my mouth trying to cover up a laugh. But that didn't help. I let go more of a giggle then an actual laugh. I walked around the kitchen finding a pot instantly and handed it to him. He was probably just staring at it blankly as he took it, he didn't move. I smiled again, taking hold of it.
âI'll do it.â He reluctantly let it go.
âI really should.â He protested.
I shook my head as I went over to the sink.
âYou know, humans are most of the time naturally good at cooking.â I filled it with water, setting it in the sink. I went to the stove and turned it on as the water filled. Then went over to the fridge.
âCould you get that?â I asked. Luckily they had milk and butter. I heard the water turn off.
âUh. Where?â
âThe stove...â I said turning around, setting the ingredients down and searching for a bowl. Who didn't know how to make mac and cheese? I mean, the ingredients and instructions were on the box! That only meant one thing, these guys didn't eat food, ever.
âDo you have any salt?â I asked absent mindedly, then bit my lip. I could only imagine the look he must have been giving me right now. âNevermind, ill find it.â
He just stood there watching me. Maybe in amazement, I wasn't sure, as I made the highly simple mace and cheese. When I was done cooking it, we sat down. He seemed bored as he rested his chin in his hands, tapping his fingers on the counter as I ate. I suddenly lost my appetite.
âYou probably have something better to do.â I said quietly. He sat up.
âNo, not really.â He shrugged. I looked at him, he turned away. I looked away now and poked at my food. He cleared his throat. âYou should eat.â
âI'm not hungry.â
âEat, Jamieâ
âBut I--â
âYou need to eat.â He interrupted me, speaking slowly and pushing the bowl over to me. I sighed.
âOK.â I mumbled, taking a bite. âThere...â I smiled.
âDo I have to force feed you?â I didn't know if he was serious or not. I could probably tell if I could just see his face.
âNo...â I took another bite. His lips curled into a smile.
âKale.â A deep, mean sounding voice suddenly said from the darkness. He looked in the direction of the voice. âLet's go...â
Kale nodded, obviously understanding what he was talking about even though I had no idea.
âStay here.â He ordered in a completely different tone then he had been talking in earlier. He leaned towards me a little. âTry not to talk to any of them...on second thought, just avoid them entirely.â He said quietly then got up, changing his sentence and tone at the last moment. He left into the darkness, leaving me alone in a strange place.
I had nothing to do, so I ate what was in my bowl and sat boredly. I crossed my arms on the counter, resting my chin on my arms as I stared at nothing. It seemed like forever before Kale appeared again. I sat up. He cleared his throat.
âOK, let's go.â
I frowned, resting my head back down. He stood there for a moment, his mouth turned down. Did I look like an idiot?
âCome on!â He snapped.
I sighed. âI'm not stupid, you're not Kale.â Kale's voice, like I said before, was very distinct. It was a lot different from any of the other voices. As I listened to them all talk at once earlier I heard all deep, husky, mean voices. Even Dante's was like that. The one that stood out was Kale's. Deep, strong, controlled and soft all at once.
This guy growled. I sat up again, feeling myself tremble. Maybe I shouldn't have let my guard down. I knew all too well how inhumanly strong these guys were. He took a step forward.
âJared! Stay away from the girl! I've had enough of you...â A voice, Kale's voice, came from behind him.
His lips curled into a snarl. He seemed to be watching me, even though I wasn't sure how they could see through there hoods, now that I think about it. He spun around now, and pushed passed Kale out of the kitchen. Kale came into the light.
âWhat did I say about avoiding them and controlling your fear?â He walked over to me as I stood.
âIt's a lot harder then it seems.â I crossed my arms.
âThey won't hesitate to kill you.â He warned. I took a step back.
âYeah? So what about you?â
He sighed. âI told Dante I would protect you, and that's exactly what I'm going to do.â
âWhat does he want with me anyways?â I asked abruptly.
He only shurgged.
âWhat do you mean....?â I shrugged, mimicking him.
âThere are just some things he keeps to himself.â He said quietly. I looked at him, wanting so badly to see his face. Part of me was terrified that he would have the face I saw earlier in the car, the other part was just curious.
âWhat's with the hoods?â I asked, instantly biting down on my lip, looking away. âSorry...â I said quickly. He sighed again.
âCome on, I better show you around the house.â He only waited a moment before taking my arm and dragging me out of the kitchen.
He led me through the house. And basically explained to me that I could only go down the right hallways and none of the left ones. Making it easier, all the right hallways were dimly lit and the left ones were pitch black. We walked through a TV room with a plasma TV and video game counsels, two bathrooms, the kitchen of course and âmy roomâ as Kale called it. I didn't like the sound of that.
There wasn't going to be much to do. I knew this place was so much bigger then what he showed me. There were no windows and no doors that led outside. I wasn't going to be able to tell what time of day it was. As a matter of fact I had no idea how long I had even been there for. Had it only been a couple hours? It must have been. It felt like days but was it? I doubted it but then again, I really had no idea.
After the tour, Kale turned to me and let out a sudden sigh.
âWe should really clean that up now.â He was referring to my cut up lip. The blood had completely dried by now though. He led me back into one of the bathrooms, pulling out a couple cotton balls which he dampened. He turned to me, taking hold of my chin. His fingers were freezing! He must have ignored my slight gasp as he began to clean up the cut.
âThey think they can treat anybody any way that they want...â He was muttering. âI don't think they realize how fragile you can be...â He continued. âThey think you're worthless because you're human...â He paused and got quieter. He yanked his hand away, finished cleaning up the cut and threw the cotton balls away. âNot all of us are like that, you know.â He turned back to me again. I was looking up into his black hood that I knew I would eventually have to get used to. I nodded.
âI know.â I nodded, quietly.
He was looking down at me, im sure of it. Then he abruptly turned away. I sighed, following him out of the bathroom...
