The Temporary Wife: Chapter 47
The Temporary Wife: Luca and Valentina’s Story
My heart skips a beat when my wife walks out of the dressing room, a long red gown highlighting every delicious curve. âWe should stay home,â I murmur.
Valentina chuckles, and my heart skips a beat. She hasnât smiled that way in a while. Witnessing her grandmother have an episode took its toll on her, and seeing her father in my office just made things worse. I suspect that Ben constantly being around her at work doesnât help either. Everywhere she turns, there are reminders of the past, and no matter how hard I try, I canât eliminate them all.
Hopefully, sheâll be able to relax a little tonight. I know weâre technically attending this charity event for work, but Iâm definitely sneaking in a dance or two with her.
âWhatâs wrong?â she asks, twirling around slowly. âWerenât you the one who picked this dress? Raven told me you called her and kept grumbling about how you wanted me wearing red for you this time. Donât tell me youâre still mad about Theo? How can you be so petty, Luca?â
Heat rushes to my cheeks as I mentally curse my sister-in-law. Damn Raven. I shouldâve kept my mouth shut around her. Of course she went and tattled to my wife straight away. âStay right there,â I tell her when she walks toward me. âLet me take a photo for your grandmother.â Abuela has been calling me every so often ever since Valentina and I stayed the night at her house. In part, I think, because sheâs trying to make me feel accepted. I think she feels bad for the way she hit me, and Iâm not sure how to convince her that itâs completely fine. Itâs easy to see why Valentina loves her so much.
My wifeâs eyes widen a fraction, and she smiles broadly as she poses for me. For a moment, I just stare at her, frozen in place.
âLuca?â
I snap out of it and take a couple of photos, my heart racing. Sheâs so beautiful, itâs unreal. When she smiles at me that way, I become utterly useless. I truly think sheâs slowly driving me insane.
âLetâs go, Luca. Weâll be late.â
I quickly set the new photo of her as my phoneâs background and send it to Abuela, feeling oddly pleased with myself. Abuela and I have been getting on great lately, and Valentina doesnât know it, but I now know all kinds of embarrassing childhood stories. Her calls have become something I look forward to. Sometimes itâs simply to ask me if Valentina and I have eaten yet, and other times itâs to tell me stories of the past. Valentinaâs mother wonât warm up to me, but Abuela definitely has.
âYou really look far too beautiful,â I grumble as we walk into the venue the charity ball is being held in. With each passing day, it becomes harder to keep this marriage hidden. I want everyone to know that sheâs mine, that touching her will invoke my wrath.
She smiles at me, her eyes twinkling. âThank you, husband.â
Damn it. Thatâs fucking foul play, and she knows it. âYouâd better remember,â I murmur.
âRemember what?â
âThat Iâm your husband.â
She chuckles and straightens out the lapels of my tux. I bite back a smile when I see the diamonds in her wedding ring glittering in the light. âHow could I ever forget?â she asks me.
âFuck,â I growl. âYouâre such a good girl, baby.â Looks like she didnât take her wedding ring off after I put it on her this morning, and the sight of it on her finger brings me such intense fucking pleasure. âLetâs wrap this up quickly so we can go home. You deserve a reward for wearing your ring to an event like this one.â
Her gaze darkens, and she looks away. âIâll hold you to it,â she murmurs, her voice low.
Fucking hell. Should I just take my wife home right now and bribe the Kennedys?
âOh, there they are!â Valentina says, her hand wrapping around mine. She pulls me along before abruptly letting go, her cheeks heating when she realizes she was holding my hand. I love how sheâs slipping up lately. Itâs clear sheâs warming to the thought of us being a couple out in the open. Just a little longer. If I can hold on a little longer, Iâll be able to convince her to publicize our marriage. I canât rush anything when it comes to her.
âLuca?â Alec says, surprised. âI havenât seen you in a while. How are you?â
We shake hands, and Alecâs wife, Elena, hugs me tightly, much to her husbandâs chagrin. He pulls her into him and wraps his hand around her waist possessively, making me chuckle. I always thought that he was overly obsessed with his wife, but I finally get it.
âAlec, Elena, you must have already met my wiââ I pause and catch myself in time. âMy⦠wildly intelligent Executive Secretary,â I end up saying, my expression stony. What the fuck did I just say?
Valentina looks at me, her expression flustered but surprisingly, not angry. Just a few weeks ago, sheâd have been furious over a near slip-up like that. Maybe she really is warming to the idea of truly being my wife.
I stand back as she charms Alec with her knowledge and professionalism. When sheâs like that, I canât take my eyes off her. I love every version of her, but this one is my favorite. Valentina on a mission, filled with passion and confidence, is a sight to behold. It took her weeks to put together a proposal for Alec, and I have no doubt he wonât be able to deny her. When my wife wants something, she never fails. Truthfully, she didnât need to try so hard. Iâm not at liberty to disclose it to her, but I know which client Ben brought in. Even if Alec says no, Valentina still wonât struggle to beat Ben. Anyone she would bring in will be better than what that jackass can accomplish.
âYouâre in love with her,â Elena says as she moves to stand by my side, a few steps away from Alec and Valentina.
I turn toward her, surprised. âI⦠Iâm sorry, what?â
She chuckles and turns back toward Valentina. âYou nearly called her your wife, didnât you?â
Damn. I was hoping she missed that.
âYou look at her the way my husband looks at me,â she says, a smile on her face. âLet me tell you a secret, Luca. When Alec and I first got married, it was a marriage of convenience that no one knew about. It was meant to be a simple deal, and love was never part of the plan.â
I turn toward her, wide-eyed. âWhat?â
She chuckles at my obvious disbelief. âYou two are probably fooling everyone, but you canât fool Alec and me. Not when weâve been in your exact situation.â
Alec and Elena are so insanely in love with each other that it seems impossible for their marriage to have been one of convenience.
âIâll tell you another secret.â I glance at her, wary. I dislike how quickly she figured us out. âAlec and I nearly got divorced because he refused to admit that he loved me. Donât let that happen to you. If you love her, you need to let her know, and you need to treat her right. Alec ended up suffering and groveling for months in an effort to save our marriage. Donât let it get that far, Luca.â
I turn back toward my wife and sigh. âIt isnât me,â I tell her. âIâm not the problem. Itâs her. She doesnât love me, and she has no interest in turning this into anything more than it is. You have no idea how many tricks I had to play to even get her to marry me.â
Elena looks into my eyes, her gaze searching. âHave you ever told her that you love her, and that your marriage is no longer the deal it started off as? How do you know that she isnât just adhering to the boundaries you mutually agreed on because she doesnât know you want her to overstep?â
I stare at her wide-eyed, but she merely smiles at me knowingly before turning away and walking toward Valentina. âWeâll invest,â she says, her arm wrapping around my wife. âWindsor Finance has been on our radar for a while now, and Iâve heard enough to be convinced.â
Valentina looks at me with such joy in her eyes that I canât help but chuckle. Aw, fuck. Iâm fucking done for. Elena Kennedy is right. Iâm head over heels for my wife.
