Chapter 21
Sinful Blaze (Chekhov Bratva Book 1)
Iâm too nervous about leaving the gallery without express permission from my bosses to go to a sit down restaurant, so we decide on a gourmet burger joint nearby that Mak swears has âthe best double cheeseburgers in the whole city.â
âYouâre fine,â he reassures me when Iâm caught checking my phone for the hundredth time. He pops a steak fry into his mouth and flashes me a wicked grin. âYouâve got time.â
âI just donât want them to get back and find me gone and freak out andâ¦â I sigh. âFire me.â
âThey wonât. Theyâve got a few hours to kill at the vetâs.â
Both Sofiya and I whip our wide-eyed stares at him.
âWhat? Oh! No!â Mak holds his hands up to calm us down. âI swear, nothing like that! Theyâre just waiting for the emergency surgery on a dog that may or may not be theirs to complete. Plot twist: itâs not theirs, and a poor hit-and-run found on the street is about to go to a nice, new forever home.â
Sofi snorts. Iâm⦠confused. âBut what about their dog?â
âSafe and sound. Probably getting one of those pup cups at the cafe right about now. They really need to pay their dog walker more. Makes it less easy to be bribed, yâknow?â
The audacity.
The evil genius of it all.
The sheer fact that such manipulation doesnât even faze this man, or this family, one bit.
Iâm not sure if Iâm offended, concerned, or impressed.
âSo, Daph, tell us more about your family!â Sofi playfully nudges my arm. âYou said your dad called earlier?â
âYeah, the usual family drama.â I try to laugh it off, unconvincing as it feels. âHeâs fine, though. Everyone is fine.â
âAre they excited for the baby?â
That answer, Iâm not able to come up with as quickly. Iâm pretty sure Iâm making a weird face when I say, âYeah, kind of? More my sister. Sheâs super excited to be an aunt.â
âSo am I!â Sofi squeals and claps her fingertips together. âOh my gosh, we have to go shopping!â
âIâm sure sheâd love that.â And just like that, Iâm mildly terrified by what could happen with Sofi and Mel running through a mall with limitless credit cards. Time to redirect. âSo what about you? Is it just you three? No sisters?â
âOneâs enough,â Mak drawls. âBut yeah, as far as siblings go, Pash is the eldest and weâve been toddling behind him since birth.â
âHappily, I might add.â Sofi smiles. âThereâs nothing our big brother wonât do for us. And thereâs nothing we wonât do for him.â
âSo does that mean youâre allâ¦â I circle the air with a fry as I try to think of how to ask it. âYou work together?â
They share a look. âHow much has our brother told you? About his work?â
I busy myself with my drink. âJust that heâs the boss. With a capital âB,â if you know what I mean. But no zoot suits or fedoras, from what I understand.â
Mak snorts. âI figured heâd have mentioned something by now. With you two shacking up togetherâ ââ
âItâs not as literal as it sounds,â I interject. I donât know why it matters, considering Iâm literally pregnant with his child, but⦠I donât know. I guess I donât want his family thinking Iâm just some loose skank warming his bed and mooching off his generosity. âSorry. I mean, weâre more just, like, roommates.â
âRight.â Sofi casts a glance to my swollen womb, but her smile never wavers. âDoes he know that?â
I stammer for a good answer. How can I answer on his behalf? Especially after the shower?
âAnyway, Iâm his second-in-command. Mak does a lot of the same work as me, butââ She winks at him. ââheâs more expendable.â
He rolls his eyes. âShe means Iâm marriage material. I can step down to focus on having my own family if I need to.â
âDo you want to?â
The siblings exchange looks once again, and I feel like thereâs more to this than theyâre sharing. But Mak shrugs and tosses back a few more fries doused in sauce. âFair question. Now that I have the option, I might actually want to. Weâll see.â
âThings changed when you came along,â Sofi tries to offer as explanation. âSome things Pash tried to pass off to us, and mainly Mak, are now his responsibility.â
âOh.â I look down at my half-eaten cheeseburger. âSorry.â
âItâs a good thing! Really. And weâre so happy to have you in our family now.â Her gaze lingers longingly at my baby bump. âYou and this precious little one. Fair warning, though: she is going to be severely overprotected.â
That makes me laugh. âNo shit. I donât know how Iâm gonna explain her guards to the preschool.â
âAh. So youâre aware youâre being followed.â
I sag. âBoris and Dem are over at the window. Theyâll change shifts with Anton and Ilya in a few hours, and then return for the midnight shift outside the penthouse. Although Iâm pretty sure all four of them have access to an apartment somewhere inside my building. Safe to say Iâm very aware.â
Mak returns his sisterâs wink with one of his own. âI like her. What do you think?â
Sofi grins. âI like her, too.â
âThink Momâll like her?â
My jaw drops. Mother Chekhov. I hadnât thought that far ahead. âYour mom?â I say in slow-dawning horror. âIs she⦠tough?â
When I look back up, theyâre both snickering. âOh, just wait. Youâll be meeting her soon enough.â
