Chapter 15: Why is that so hard?

Ethan's POV

*****

"So is that girl living with you?" Jenna asked after Kelsey walked off to call Noah.

"Sort of," I replied.

I was still pretty mad that Aaron interrupted Kelsey and I. I couldn't help thinking about what would have happened if he didn't.

Would I seriously have kissed her?

I mean, I wanted to kiss her. I didn't know why, I just did, but that didn't mean she wanted to kiss me.

"Are you sure there's nothing going on with you two? You seemed pretty close when I got here," Aaron said, his comment making me mad.

He had no right to come here and intrude in my life and Kelsey's. What was going on between us, whatever that was, did not have anything to do with Aaron.

He was a thing of the past, even if he was still friends with her.

"Yes, I'm sure," I replied, trying to keep my cool.

Why was it taking her so long to call Noah and Meg and tell them to get there so we could all just leave?

"Oh shoot, I left my phone in the car, can you come with me?" Jenna asked me, taking me by surprise.

I didn't even know the girl, and yet she wanted me to accompany her to look for her phone.

"Jen, I can come with you if you want" Aaron replied.

"No Aaron, you better stay here. We don't want to leave Leah alone now do we?" She quickly replied.

I had a strong feeling that she really just wanted to find an excuse to end up alone with me. I mean, I couldn't blame her, but come on, could she make it a bit less obvious?

"I can always come wi-" Leah started off before being interrupted by Jenna.

Of course.

"You're not really going to let me go alone are you?" She asked, looking straight at me, touching my arm and making me shudder at the sudden contact.

I let out a sigh and just walked behind her, knowing that it was useless arguing with girls like her. I thought that maybe she would have made my life easier if I just didn't squabble with her.

The walk was silent for the most part, before she turned to me and decided to kick-start a conversation.

"I'm sorry if I may have come off too strong, I'm just not used to being around cute guys like you," she said.

I rolled my eyes at her words. I appreciated the fact that she wasn't afraid of saying what was on her mind, but I loathed the way she said it.

It was one of the traits that normally I would love in a girl, but Jenna didn't make me feel anything at all.

"Thanks, I guess?" I said, the phrase coming out as more of a question rather than as a statement.

"No problem," she replied with a smirk playing on her lips, probably feeling as if she was scoring big points with me.

Even if she was scoring none at all.

After what seemed like forever we finally arrived at their car, and after she unlocked it, she started rummaging around a little before coming out once again.

"Oh, that's weird, my phone's not in here," she said. "Can you help me look?"

I simply nodded with a slight sigh, getting in the car to look for the phone, only to realise that there was no phone in sight.

"It's not in there," I told her after a while looking.

"Oh, it was in my pocket the whole time, oh my God I'm so sorry for wasting your time," she said after reaching into her pocket and pulling out her phone.

Wow.

She didn't do that on purpose at all.

Note the sarcasm.

"Hope it wasn't a problem," she said, tugging on her bottom lip slightly.

She basically wasted more than 5 minutes of my life to look for a phone that was with her the whole time, of course it was a problem!

We stayed quiet during our walk back. I wasn't interested in talking to her or in hearing to what she had to say. I was already not liking this Jenna.

Almost as much as I didn't like Aaron.

I couldn't understand what was happening to me. Aaron and I not only used to be teammates, but we were also friends. I had never had a problem with him before.

At least not externally.

My bad mood quickly faded, however, as soon as we walked past a grown man wearing a cat suit.

Literally.

It was a very tight black silky cat costume, and when I say tight, I mean tight. He was probably a comedian or something because the entire scene was both funny and disturbing. It made us laugh the whole way back to where the others were.

As we arrived everyone was looking at us, May and Meg weren't there and Kelsey looked as if she was about to burst out crying in any second.

It made me want to just run up to her and hug her.

What was even happening to me?

I walked towards her to see what was wrong, but what she said made me stop in my tracks.

"Where have you been?! Everyone was waiting for you and you just disappeared, you're so careless," she spat, tears streaming down her face.

I didn't know why she was crying, nor why she was angry.

I was going to explain everything that happened but before I could, Jenna decided to lie telling her that I was showing her around, making Kelsey run off.

Why would she lie like that?

I was about to go after her, but Ellie suddenly felt like she needed to use the bathroom, and that gave Aaron the chance to beat me to it, taking off the second Kelsey ran off.

Couldn't he have just minded his own business?

"Can't you hold it till we get home?" I asked Ellie, wanting to go to where Kelsey was.

"Ethan, please," she begged me, shaking my arm as she bounced up and down.

Looking at how desperate she looked to go to the bathroom, I finally gave in and we walked towards the toilets, everyone else trailing behind us.

"Leah, can you please go with Ellie, make sure she's okay?" I asked.

I wasn't going to go in the girls' bathroom, and Leah so far was more trustworthy than Jenna.

"I have to pee too," Lara said, rushing in after Ellie and Leah, leaving me with Jake, Noah and Jenna.

"Can you guys tell me what happened to Kelsey?" I asked Noah and Jake, who were so far the only two people who knew what was actually going on.

"She had a fight with Meg about Leah, Meg got super mad and she just left, leaving Kelsey standing there, really upset," Noah said.

"Oh, what a cry baby, she can always make new friends," Jenna said, making us all look at her in shock and anger.

I couldn't understand how she could say things like that. Did she not hear herself?

Did she think she think that she was sounding cool?

I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if she turned out to have no friends.

"Shut up, you're not being funny!" Noah snapped. "Kelsey is the sweetest person ever, I don't know what's your problem but you don't know her so don't go talking trash about her because fake people like you make me want to barf," he spat, leaving Jenna red as a tomato.

"How dare you talk to me like that. Is that the way you talk to your parents? If that's the case, then I feel bad for them."

My head snapped towards her quicker than a flash of lightning, my fists clenched so tightly that the skin started turning white.

That was it.

How dared she talk to my brother that way?

Did she have no nerve?

"Don't talk to my brother that way!" I finally told her.

I had been playing nice for too long. If she didn't care enough to be nice to us, then I had no reason to be nice with her.

"Oh, he's your brother?" Jenna stammered.

"No, he's my bus driver," I sarcastically snapped. "Yes, he's my brother and he's right, you have no right to talk about Kelsey like that, and don't you dare say that to any of my siblings ever again."

I would have loved to say that I had never met someone like her before, but I would have been lying. Nearly every single girl that ever crossed my path resembled Jenna in attitude. They all thought that that was what I liked, never attempting to realise that I hated fake.

"You're right, I'm sorry," Jenna said, shifting her gaze towards the ground, finally shutting up.

"Thank you," I replied bitterly, thanking her for the sole fact that she managed to shut her mouth.

After Ellie and Lara were done from the bathroom we walked off towards where I parked the car, only to find Kelsey and Aaron talking and laughing about something, making me feel slightly upset.

Would I have been the one laughing at her if Ellie didn't need to pee?

"She doesn't seem so upset to me," I told Jake, trying to keep my cool.

"Ahem," Noah said to grab their attention.

"Oh, hey guys" Kelsey said, not looking at me.

What the heck did I do?

Why was she so mad at me?

We eventually got into the car, the entire ride home silent. I glanced at Kelsey from time to time but she wouldn't even look my way. I saw Noah holding her hand and that stung. I didn't know why, because Noah was my brother and he was 15. There was no way anything could be going on, but it still hurt.

I wasn't jealous of course. I just wanted to be able to comfort her the way my brother did.

I just wanted to make sure that everything between me and Kelsey was okay.

Why was that so hard?
